CBC’s 29-0 win over Midleton College has set up a tantalising semi final clash with PBC in a repeat of last year’s final. Crescent await the winners of Rockwell College and St. Munchin’s College

Christian Brothers College cruised passed Midleton College in the quarter final of the Avonmore Milk Munster Schools Senior Cup with a 29-0 win at Towns Park on Thursday, and booked a semi final meeting with local rivals Presentation Brothers College Cork in a repeat of last year s final.

It was a comprehensive performance from last year s beaten finalists, who scored five tries in the win. Midleton College, having qualified for the Senior Cup closing stages after winning the Mungret Cup, never gave up the fight and continued to aim for the try line until the very end. However, they were unable to cope with the intensity of the CBC attack. First half tries from flankers John Noonan and Shane O Sullivan and a third from scrum half Chris Nolan out CBC in a strong position at the break. Midleton were unable to recover, despite some fantastic performances from captain Peter Brougham at out half, centre Cathal McSweeney and second rows David O Callaghan and Mark Deane. In the second half, tries from Eoin French, converted by Stuart Lee and replacement Robbie O Donoghue which was converted by Finnian Tummon confirmed the victory.

While advancement in the Senior Cup would have been a massive achievement for Midleton side, they can take some consolation in the fact that this season has already produced some silverware, having recently won the Mungret Cup, and with a league final yet to play, the experience of the Senior Cup will surely be invaluable.

For CBC, defeat in last year s Munster Schools Senior Cup final will give them plenty of motivation for their upcoming clash with defending champions Presentation Brothers College as their campaign to win back the title last won in 2003 continues.

Drama was the order of the day on Wednesday, with two cracking Avonmore Milk Munster Schools Senior Cup quarter finals launching Presentation Brothers College Cork and Crescent College Comprehensive into the semi finals. At Musgrave Park, a dramatic injury time converted try gave PBC the victory over a determined Glenstal Abbey side, while in Thomond Park, late scores from both sides served up a nailbiting finale as Crescent College Comprehensive held on despite a late onslaught from Ard Scoil Ris.

Last year s champions Presentation Brothers College came up against a well motivated Glenstal side in Musgrave Park, in what proved to be a keenly contested clash. Glenstal got the better start, putting three points on the board with a penalty from full back Jerome Kennedy after three minutes of play. PBC got their scoring off to a start fifteen minutes into the game with a try from a line out maul from Shane Costigan, and added to their lead when Tim Kenneally added a drop goal shortly before the half hour mark. Jerome Kennedy was on target for Glenstal, adding three penalties in quick succession before half time, to put Glenstal 12-8 in the lead at the break. However, PBC hit the ground running in the second half, and just 25 seconds after the restart, PBC s Keith Buckley crossed the line. Minutes later Niall McCarthy added another try to PBC s tally, putting them 18-12 in front. However, on the 60^th minute a try from Glenstal s Killian Lannen put them firmly back into the game, just a point behind PBC. An injury to Jerome Kennedy caused some delay, however, the talented young kicker recovered sufficiently to kick the conversion to Lannen s try, putting Glenstal a point in front as the clock counted down. The climax was a dramatic one. After a penalty had been awarded to PBC, PBC s Scott Deasy s effort fell short. An unfortunate knock on by a Glenstal player gave PBC a scrum five metres out, and from the ensuing maul, PBC s Robbie Allen grounded the ball and clinched victory for his side. Scott Deasy converted to give PBC a 25-19 victory. Full credit to both sides for an exhilarating and intense game of rugby. For Glenstal, there were outstanding performances all over the pitch, with scrum half Cormac Quinn, centre Darragh Hurley, and full-back Jerome Kennedy causing problems for the Cork side, with exceptional performances from out half Danny O Shea and No. 8 Killian Lannen. For PBC, scrum half Scott Deasy had a huge influence on the game, while centres Brian Dennehy and Tim Kenneally and forwards Robbie Allen and Andrew O Driscoll also put in fantastic performances. The result sees PBC progress to an all Cork semi final clash with the winners of Midleton College and Christian Brothers College on Sunday March 5th.

At Thomond Park, again a late score determined the winners, with Crescent College Comprehensive clinching an 11-10 win over Ard Scoil Ris, in a game that was not short on drama. In a tentative first half, the well matched sides had three apiece at half time after successful penalty kicks from Ard Scoil Ris Ger Finucane and Crescent College Comprehensive s Andrew Burke. Burke added another penalty after 47 minutes, to put Crescent 6-3 ahead. The game took on a new dimension on 62 minutes when Ard Scoil Ris second row Sean Hogan crashed over for a try, which Finucane converted to put Ard Scoil Ris 10-6 in the lead, as the minutes counted down. However, when it looked as though Ard Scoil Ris had secured the win, Crescent College Comprehensive had the final say when Sean Scanlon scored in the right corner after a move that started from a lineout. Ard Scoil Ris were not content to relinquish their chance for a semi final place, and an outstanding burst from Mark Cosgrove in the dying moments was halted metres from the line. There were some fantastic performances on both sides, with flanker Darren Holden and No. 8 Michael Sherry tireless in their work rate around the field. For Crescent, the half back pairing of scrum half Diarmuid Upton and out half Andrew Burke worked extremely well. Crescent College Comprehensive s opposition in the semi final, due to be played on Wednesday Match 1^st, will be determined on Sunday next when St. Munchin s College play Rockwell College at Thomond Park.
