ODM Financial Munster Senior Cup Roundup

There was plenty of drama and excitement in the eight games in the opening round of the ODM Financial Munster Senior Cup.

The shock of the day was at Tom Clifford Park where Division 2A side Cashel defeated Young Munster from the top flight with a dramatic ten points in injury time.

As the game entered the eighth minute Cashel led 17-13 with tries from Niall Fitzgerald and Pat O’Connor both of which Jonathan Ruru converted and a drop goal from O’ Connor to tries for Munster from Brian Haugh and Danny O’Connor and a penalty by Haugh. Ger Burke’s try looked like sending the home side into the quarter finals but a try from Robin Foote and a conversion and penalty by Ruru saw Cashel advance 27-18.

In the game of the round at Annacotty, holder’s Cork Constitution defeated U.L. Bohemian 35-15 in a repeat of last season’s final. Tries from Niall Kenneally and Cyprian Jouve both converted by Darragh Lyons and three Lyons penalties had the visitors 23-3 ahead at half time. Second half tries from Lyons and Graeme Lawlor and a Lyons conversion extended Con’s advantage. Ian Condell and Rory White replied with tries for Bohes and Shane Airey kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Extra time tries by Richie Mullane and Rob Shine helped Shannon to a 30-20 win over Bruff at Coonagh. Diarmuid O’Donovan scored Shannon’s other try and Tadhg Bennett kicked five penalties. Robbie Finn, Mike Carroll and Brian Cahill replied with tries for Bruff and Cahill kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Dolphin were comfortable 43-6 home winners over Thomond. John Fitzgerald and Steven Hansel each scored two tries for Dolphin, Darren Sweetnam and Niall Scannell also added tries and Rory Scannell kicked five conversions and a penalty. Dermot Fitzgerald replied with two penalties for the visitors.

Garryowen were the biggest winners of the day defeating Richmond 70-10. Pierce McCarthy and Brian Begley scored tries for Richmond.

Old Crescent and Highfield needed extra time at Rosbrien before the home side advanced 22-18. A penalty by Patrick O’Sullivan on eighty minutes levelled the scores 15-15. Willie Hanly, Shane Mullally and Sean Monaghan scored tries for Crescent. Mullally kicked a conversion and O’Sullivan added a conversion and a penalty for the winners. .

Fintan O’Sullivan and David O’Hea replied with tries for Highfield and Mike O’Flynn kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Midleton’s new out half Chris Walker from New Zealand made an instant hit with the home fans at the Towns Park as his drop goal in the ninth minute of injury time earned his side a 16-13 victory over Sunday’s Well. Kieran Burns scored a try for Midleton and Walker added a conversion and two penalties to his last gasp drop goal. James Mulcahy replied with a try for the ‘Well and Shane O’Riordan converted and added two penalties.

U.C.C. defeated Nenagh Ormond at the Mardyke 18-11. Sean Glynn and Conor Barry were try scorers for the students and Sean Og Murphy kicked a conversion and two penalties. Derek Corcoran replied with a try for the Tipperary side and Dan Fogarty added two conversions.

The line up for the quarter finals which are scheduled for week ending 19th October are –
Shannon v Dolphin,
Cashel v Garryowen,
Old Crescent v U.C.C.,
Cork Constitution v Midleton.
