Squad Update

Preparations will begin today for Munster’s key Heineken Cup clash with Perpignan at Thomond Park on Sunday (ko 12:45pm).

On the injury front, Munster’s latest signing Gerhard van den Heever broke a bone in his right hand against Newport Gwent Dragons on Friday night.

Van den Heever, who is not registered for the Heineken Cup, is ruled out of action for the immediate future and will see a specialist later in the week.

James Coughlan suffered a left eye trauma and will see a specialist today as a precautionary measure and Mike Sherry will get a scan later today on his left knee.

There were a number of senior, development and academy players in AIL action for their clubs at the weekend. Luke O’Dea, Ronan O’Mahony and Cian Bohane all scored tries for their sides over the weekend.

In Division 1A, Ronan O’Mahony touched down for a Garryowen side that also featured academy winger Alex Wootton and academy flanker Shane Buckley but the Dooradoyle side slipped to a 35-10 loss to Lansdowne.

Bohane crossed for a try as Dolphin overcame Ballynahinch 25-18. Development hooker Niall Scannell also played with Munster academy player Rory Scannell kicking ten points. Fellow academy players Ryan Murphy and Darren O’Shea also contributed to the win.

Senior prop John Ryan, Gerry Hurley and academy player Johnny Holland all played for Cork Con as they were beaten 23-17 by UCD in Belfield.

Development prop Alan Cotter and Munster academy player Brian Haugh played for Young Munster as they lost 46-28 to Clontarf.

In Division 1B, O’Dea was the matchwinner for Shannon as he scored a late try in their last-gasp win over Belfast Harlequins at Thomond Park.

Academy player Gearoid Lyons kicked a penalty for Shannon with development hooker Duncan Casey captaining the side.

Elsewhere in Division 1B, Munster academy players Jack O’Donoghue and David Johnston played for UL Bohemians as they beat Dungannon 29-13 with O’Donoghue scoring one of the tries.

Academy player Jack Cullen featured for Bruff in Division 2A as they went down 29-19 to City of Derry.
