Match Report: St. Munchin’s v CBC 11.02.16

Junior Cup quarter final Match Report courtesy of Cian Davis and Michael Davern from St. Munchin’s College.

This was a tightly contested game by two strong contenders for the cup. The opening moments saw CBC apply the pressure with close carries being made. St. Munchins regrouped and forced a few knock-ons. CBC outhalf Billy Caine scored a penalty which proved crucial to give his side the lead.

Munchins enjoyed a good spell of possession but failed to take advantage. St. Munchin’s outhalf Jazz Pendejito almost levelled the scores but his penalty from around the halfway line just fell short of the posts.

With two or so minutes to half time the Cork team broke away and ended up in the Shannon-siders five metre line. They got the ball out wide but they were denied the opening try of the game by superb tackle by Alex Casey between the posts.

It was CBC who had their backs against the wall when the second half kicked off. Pendejito exploited space on the overlap before kicking ahead. Munchins centre Josh Neill got on the end of it but a fumble saw CBC remain in the lead.

CBC responded instantly and after some tough carrying from their fowards, Fergal Conway scored a try to give CBC a 10-0 lead.

Minutes later, Conway was sent to the sinbin. This offered St. Munchins a lifeline. Munchins showed great heart and character in the final ten minutes and were deservedly rewarded when Kristan Lugod finished in the corner.

Pendejito scored the conversion. This set up a tense and exiting finish to a brilliant game.
CBC kept the ball and ran down the clock. They ran out victorious in the end after a strong performance. They will go onto the semi-finals while St. Munchins bow out of the competition.
