Munster Rugby Publish Second Environmental Impact & Sustainability Report

Munster Rugby have published our second Environmental Impact and Sustainability Report.

Munster Rugby have published our second Environmental Impact and Sustainability Report.

The report reviews our ongoing work in environmental sustainability and climate action.

The report is crucial to state our commitments clearly, and is an honest appraisal of the things we have done to date. It outlines our carbon emissions, overall targets and action plan, and highlights our achievements and progress.

As we grapple with more intense weather events across our rugby seasons, we want to inspire collective climate action. Using our own rugby language, our Environmental Impact and Sustainability Report 2024 aims to go further with our communication of this complex issue already impacting our people and our communities.

We delve into our ‘why’, our ‘how’ and share what happens behind-the-scenes to encourage others to join us and help us on our journey.

Actions Areas

At Munster, we like to lead by example, hold ourselves to account and celebrate the wins. Our staff, players, supporters and partners are working collaboratively to bring sustainability actions to fruition. We share stories from three key action areas including:

1. Our Energy Transition
2. Supporter Engagement
3. Going Circular

Supporters have stated that transparency is essential to how the club communicates progress. In response, we look back on data from the 2022-23 season and actions through the 2023-24 season.

Action highlights and data insights:

• Our total carbon footprint was 6,892 tCO2e in 2022-23
• 70% of emissions were generated by fan travel and 30% from operations
• Carbon emissions from energy and fuel down 23%
• 644 solar panels installed on Virgin Media Park stadium’s roof
• 77% of car fleet transitioned to fully electric
• Introduced reusable cups in Thomond Park’s west stand
• Launched Munster March campaign, engaging supporters on travel to stadiums
• Developed a Climate Transition Action Plan
• Retained UN Sport for Climate Action Framework signatory status
• Signed up to UN Global Compact

Maximise Our Impact

We explain how Munster Rugby, specifically as a sport organisation with world-class supporters, can uniquely tackle climate change and help wider society to shift gears towards a sustainable future with a two-prong approach – leading by example and using our influence. Everyone at the club, including our supporters, are crucial to this contribution.

In our next steps, we want to accelerate our actions and connect the dots across our activities by allowing more and more people across the club to participate. We hope you will share our report with others, but we’re also asking you to come one step further with us.

Input your ideas and the actions you want to see to turn Munster Rugby into a sustainability trailblazer in the world of rugby, in Ireland and for our local communities.

This will land directly with our in-house team and potentially into our sustainability strategy. Get creative and think big.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

We do hope you will join us on our sustainability journey.
