Munster Development

The Munster Development Squad, play a pivotal role in the Munster Rugby development structure. Many sub-Academy and Greencore Academy players are involved at this level which is seen as a launch pad for a professional career.

2016-17 Munster U20/Development Season

The Munster U20 and Development side overcame an 18-0 half-time deficit to beat Ulster 21-18 in their Thomond Park opener. Captain Colm Hogan led from example as the full-back, formerly at Glenstal Abbey and now with Dublin University, touched down twice in the second half with flanker Gavin Coombes also crossing. Out-half Conor Fitzgerald kicked all three conversions to clinch a superb victory.

Leinster took the title after a clinical second-half display as Munster fell to a 39-16 defeat in Donnybrook in the decider. Munster were leading 9-7 shortly before half-time thanks to three penalties from Young Munster’s Alan Tynan but a Jordan Lamour try just before the break gave Leinster a 12-9 advantage. After a tight opening 15 minutes of the second half that saw Leinster increase their lead thanks to a Conor Dean penalty, the crucial moments came just before the hour as two tries in three minutes saw the hosts race 27-9 ahead. Replacement prop Liam O’Connor crossed from short range to give Munster a glimmer of hope on 73 minutes as the visitors trailed by 12 points but two late tries from Leinster sealed the title for the hosts.

2015-16 Munster U20 Season (Interpro Champions)

The Munster U20s came away with an 18-17 win away to Ulster in their opening Interprovincial fixture. Young Munster full-back Dave O’Mahony touched down in the first half to open the scoring but narrowly failed to convert. Ulster then levelled with a try of their own before O’Mahony nosed his side back in front with a penalty kick to give Munster an 8-5 half-time advantage. Munster’s points in the second half came from a try to Shannon No. 8 John Foley on the 62nd minute converted by O’Mahony. A Bill Johnston penalty followed to claim a hard fought 18-17 victory over the championship holders.

The second game resulted in a resounding victory over Leinster at the Mardyke (22-8). Munster led 9-3 at the break thanks to penalties from Bill Johnston (two) and Dave O’Mahony. A fourth penalty, from Tom McHale, extended Munster’s advantage before a Shane Daly intercept try sealed the win with McHale converting and then adding a late penalty.

The Munster U20s won their first Interprovincial title with a narrow win over Connacht U20s at The Sportsground in the decider (23-24). Munster snatched a late victory and a final round win thanks to a try from Shannon’s John Foley and the winning conversion from Young Munster’s David O’Mahony. The hosts dominated the opening half and led 17-5 at half time with hooker Vincent O’Brien scoring Munster’s only points on the stroke of half-time. Connacht extended their advantage with a penalty after the interval but a second try from Munster winger Colm Hogan kept Head Coach Peter Malone’s young charges in touch. Connacht kicked a second penalty before Munster closed the gap to six points with a try from Shane Daly which full-back Tom McHale converted. Then came Foley’s late try and the crucial O’Mahony conversion giving Munster a one-point lead, and finally the U20 Interprovincial title.

2014-15 Munster U20s Season

Prior to the Interprovincial Series, the Munster U-20s competed in the Clermont International Tournament. They were beaten by hosts Clermont Auvergne before recording a win over English side Leicester Tigers. The Munster U20s narrowly lost all three Interprovincial games in 2014.

The campaign started with a 32-20 defeat to Leinster at Ashbourne RFC. Munster trailed 22-3 at half-time and mounted a stirring second half comeback with Frank Bradshaw-Ryan, Liam O’Connor and Jack Cullen touching down but Leinster held on for the win. That loss was followed by a defeat to Connacht at Thomond Park. Cork Con’s Glen Stokes scored the only try with Gearóid Lyons kicking the conversion and a penalty. The Series ended with a 17-12 defeat to title-winners Ulster at Dooradoyle with Gearóid Lyons kicking one penalty and Tomás Quinlan kicking three penalties. The side was captained by Stephen Fitzgerald with Peter Malone as Head Coach. The squad included four Greencore Munster Academy players.

2013-14 Munster U20s Season

The 2013/14 season was a really difficult one for the U20 squad as they lost all three Interprovincial games by a combined total of just ten points. They started the campaign with a 17-14 defeat to Ulster at Ravenhill despite leading 14-7 going into the final ten minutes. Their bad luck continued in the second game against Leinster at Thomond Park as Gearoid Lyons’ last-minute conversion hit the post allowing the visitors to escape with a one-point victory. The campaign ended with a six point defeat to Connacht at the Showgrounds. The side was captained by Jack O’Donoghue with Greig Oliver as Head Coach. The squad included six Munster Academy players.

2012-13 Munster U20s Season

Hopes were high for a successful campaign when Connacht were beaten in the opening match of the championship at Musgrave Park. However, the crucial match was always going to be the visit to face Leinster in Donnybrook, and so it proved, despite their best efforts Munster were chasing the game for long periods and ended up at the wrong end of a 25-12 score line. The concluding fixture at Musgrave Park against Ulster saw Munster hold the lead at the interval but a strong second half from the visitors saw them gain control and a brace of tries clinched the match. The team was coached by Greig Oliver and captained by John Fitzgerald (PBC).

2011-12 Munster U20s Season

A notable draw away against the Leicester Tigers Academy augured well for the season, but the crucial match was their opening match against pre-championship favourites Leinster at Musgrave Park. Despite their best efforts they went down to a narrow defeat. Luck was not on their side either as they suffered a narrow defeat against Ulster (Ravenhill) andhere concluding fixture also ended in defeat to Connacht at Dubarry Park. Greig Oliver led the coaching team while Miah Cronin (Highfield) was team captain.
