2017-18 Schools Season

The Munster U18 Schools, sponsored by Trend Micro, began their 2017 Interprovincial Series in Donnybrook against Leinster.

Despite two impressive tries from captain Cian Hurley and centre Jamin Hoffman the side suffered a 34-22 defeat.

Next up was a home game against Ulster at Thomond Park with Munster claiming a narrow 10-9 win.

The home side were first on the scoreboard following a successful penalty kick from Crescent out-half Jack Delaney in the opening 10 minutes.

It wasn’t long before Ulster’s scrum half Nathan Doak replied to level the match and soon after struck again on target giving the visitors a 6-3 lead on the 14th minute.

In great conditions the Munster backs made an impressive break 10 minutes before half time, sending Glenstal winger Andrew Hogan over the line to claim the first and only try of the match.

Delaney made no mistake in adding the extras giving Munster a 10-6 lead going in at the break.

It was Ulster that claimed the only score of the second half with a well taken penalty off the boot of Doak finishing up with a one point victory to Munster.

Munster went on to face Leinster in Cork for their second match of the series where the suffered a 23-12 loss.

It was 33 minutes before Munster put points on the board which saw Tommy Downes embarked on a soccer-style dribble from the visitors’ 22 to cross the whitewash.

Aaron Hennessy scored Munster’s second try in stoppage time following a ruck outside the visitors’ 22 with Andrew Hogan adding the extras.

The Munster U18 Schools played their final match in Belfast where they lost out to Ulster by a 16-12 margin.

Three successful penalty kicks from Cian Whooley levelled the scores at 9 a-piece ten minutes into the second half however a converted try soon after allowed Ulster to regain their advantage at 16-9.

Whooley made no mistake on the 28th minute to claim his fourth penalty kick but it wasn’t enough to claim an away victory.

They made it two wins from two at Thomond Park thanks to an 8-3 victory over reigning champions Leinster that saw them lift the Dudley Cup, introduced this year in recognition of the late former Munster Schools Honorary Secretary Dudley Herbert. Ben Moloney’s try and a Healy penalty secured the win.

A 19-13 win over Ulster in CIT followed with the Munster tries coming from Sean French (two) and Travis Coomey as Healy kicked two of the conversions and was unlucky to see his other effort come back off the post.

The campaign ended with a 15-13 defeat away to Leinster to tie both teams at the top of the table with three wins from four and 13 points apiece. The destination of the title was then decided by points difference from the four games with Leinster coming out on top by just a single point to snatch the Interprovincial honours. Healy kicked two penalties and a conversion on the day as Paul Clancy scored Munster’s only try.

2012-13 U18 Schools Season

A win over London Irish and defeat against Millfield School were the results of the side’s pre-season tour to London. An opening day win over Connacht gave the side a good start to the championship. Pre-tournament favourites Leinster were next up at Thomond Park and the visitors fielded an exceptional side that proved too strong for the spirited hosts. Munster lost a 15 – 3 lead and the match as Ulster snatched a late victory at Ravenhill in the final game as the visitors failed to build on their early advantage. Greg O’Shea (Crescent College Comprehensive) captained the side, while the coaching duties were shared between Niall McDermott, Colm McMahon and Mark Butler.

2011-12 U18 Schools Season

An early season outing to London resulted in defeat against the London Irish Colts.

Despite an encouraging start in their encounter with Leinster at Donnybrook it was the homeside that registered the vital scores to gain the spoils, a hard earned victory over Connacht was followed by the teams best display of the season when they out scored Ulster by 24 points to 19 at Thomond Park. Ned Hodson became only the second student from Midleton College to captain the side while the coaching brief was under the guidance of Niall McDermott.

2016-17 U18 Clubs Season

The U18 Clubs side, sponsored by Bank of Ireland, made an excellent start to their campaign as they emerged with a 19-14 win away in Ulster. Hosts Ulster were 14-3 up after a dominant first-half performance with Munster’s only score coming from an early Conor Hayes penalty. The comeback started just five minutes after the interval as full-back Hayes touched down to make it 14-8. Hooker Derry Gleeson scored Munster’s second try later in the half as Munster moved to within a point and out-half Harry Byrne showed nerves of steel to kick two late penalties and complete a magnificent turnaround.

The Munster U18 Clubs side then beat Leinster for the first time in eight years at Thomond Park. Captain Evan O’Gorman, Young Munster. played a leading role and it was his first-half intercept try that gave Munster a 7-3 half-time lead. Garrryowen out-half Harry Byrne converted the 16th-minute score with Leinster’s reply coming from a Frankie O’Dea penalty. Munster extended their lead on 52 minutes as speedy Ennis RFC winger Ikem Ugwuru raced clear down the right wing for the hosts’ second try. The win was sealed late on as Young Munster full-back Conor Hayes kicked his first penalty to make it 15-3.

A 35-17 victory over Connacht at the Sportsgrounds in the Interpro decider saw the Munster U18 Clubs team claim the Interpro title for the first time in 13 years. Brendan O’Connor’s side ran in five tries in a thrilling game of rugby with both sides making a huge contribution to the competition’s crucial encounter. Munster opened the scoring through hooker Derry Gleeson and increased the lead with a second try from scrum-half Nick O’Donoghue as Garryowen out-half Harry Byrne converted. The hosts finished the half very strongly however as Christian Nielson went over for a try to open the scoring for Connacht six minutes before the break. This was followed by another try from Danny Arnold which was converted by Dylan Prendergast to level the scores 12-all at half-time. Munster captain Evan O’Gorman put Munster ahead after the break with a try, which was quickly followed by another five-pointer from winger Tom Hanley. Connacht’s Liam Winnet replied with an unconverted try but it was Munster who controlled the remainder of the game as Hayes put over two penalties to stretch Munster’s lead to 28-17. Munster’s other winger Ikem Ugwuru finished the scoring with grubber kick behind the Connacht defence and touched down under the posts and Hayes converted to cap a superb Munster display.
