‘A’ School Blitz Gets Underway At Castletroy College

A Blitz day for second year students of ‘A’ Schools in the North Munster region was held at Castletroy College this week with 12 teams competing throughout the day.
Each team had between 14-15 players and were from one of the five schools in attendance; Glenstal Abbey, Ardscoil Rís, St Munchin’s College, Crescent College Comprehensive and Castletory College.
The blitz day is designed to encourage participation and free-flowing rugby. The format also ensures that all players get meaningful game time.
Each match was 11-a-side and unlimited rolling substitutions were permitted. Each match was 18 minutes in duration.
Community Rugby Officer Kenneth McNamara said:
“Due to Covid, we never had a first year blitz last year, for these lads to get some meaningful game time, it was a great reward for all the hard work they put in.
“For a lot of players it was the first time wearing their school jerseys, so it was a special day. The day is also designed to give players as much game time as possible which will benefit their development.”
Next week, a similar Blitz day will be held for first year students of the same schools at St Munchin’s College in Limerick.
The Rugby Development Department are currently in the process of inviting schools in the other regions of the province for their own respective Blitz days before the midterm break.
