Adapted Tag Adopted In Charleville
5th July 2017 By The Editor
Never has rugby been more accessible to all. Our Women are currently training ahead of the World Cup, bright young players are currently involved in the Talent Camps, the #FutureReds are currently taking part in the Summer Camps, and in Charleville those of mixed ability also got a chance to try the oval ball game.
Adapted tag is a form of tag which has been changed in certain areas to make it more accessible for those with disabilities which may limit them from taking part in the full form of the game. It’s proved extremely popular across the province, with programs in all six counties steadily growing the numbers taking part.
Mallow RFC began a mixed ability rugby team, the Mallow Barbarians, in February 2016 in association with the Cope Foundation in the town, and in conjunction with the Cork Sports Partnership, Munster Rugby are bringing the game to more, beginning in Charleville, Bantry, and Clonakilty for the moment.
This week Community Rugby Officer Eugene McCarthy was on hand to keep track of the game’s progress in Charleville, running block sessions with St Joseph’s Foundation based on the town just inside the Cork/Limerick border.
Some fine skills on show and plenty of rugby talent in the school, and with numbers growing hopefully there’ll be plenty of more chances for these extraordinary young people to forge a path with the oval ball.
