Age-Grade Interprovincial Round-Up

25th August 2024 By The Editor

Age-Grade Interprovincial Round-Up

It was another busy weekend of age-grade Interprovincial action as the Munster U18 Girls, U18 Clubs, U18 Schools and U19 Men were all in action against their provincial counterparts.

It was a disappointing weekend for Munster with all four sides coming away with losses.

The Munster U18 Girls took on Connacht in Corinthians RFC on Saturday and they came away with a 14-5 loss with Noel O’Meara’s side set to face Ulster in the final round of action next Saturday at Virgin Media Park (3pm).

The U18 Schools were also in action on Saturday where they took on Ulster in the Newforge Sports Complex.

It was Ulster who led 24-7 at the break with Munster’s try coming from prop Fionn O’Sullivan which was converted by James Butler.

Matt Brown’s side launched a comeback in the second half with two tries from Aaron Moloney with one of them converted by Alan Cleary which put just five points between the sides. Munster searched for the game-levelling try but it was Ulster who made sure of the victory with three points from a penalty.

The U18 Clubs were first up and Sunday and they had two try attempts held up in the first 10 minutes.

They’re hard work finally paid off when Daniel Coughlan broke the Ulster line from well inside Munster’s half and touched down in the 14th minute. Sundays Well’s Ryan O’Connor added the extras.

But Ulster fought back and score three tries of their own before the break.

Running into the sheds at halftime Ulster led 7-17.

With the wind swirling around Virgin Media Park it was Munster who got action underway for the second half.

Ulster crossed over for their fourth try of the afternoon as their maul barreled over in the 42nd minute.

Munster got a maul try of their own just 10 minutes later as they sent hooker Callum Tutty crashing over. Facing the wind Ryan O’Connor’s kick just skimmed the front of the posts.

With a fire lit under them, Munster continued to fight and in the 63rd minute Rhys Morgan dotted down bringing just seven points between the sides with not long left on the clock

But Ulster had one last try in them as they crashed over on the 66th minute.

It wasn’t to be for Gerry Casey’s men as the score line stood at 17-31 in favour of the Ulster Men at the full time whistle.

In the final game on Sunday, Munster U19s got scores on the board early on when winger Calem Harte crashed over in the third minute for an unconverted try.

They struck again just five minutes later when Robert Carney crossed over the white wash with Charlie O’Shea adding the extras.

Ulster got their first try of the day in the 16th minute when Rio McDonagh touched down. Out-half Daniel Green followed with the conversion.

Ulster found themselves over twice more before the break putting them 12-21 ahead at half-time.

Munster were first to strike once again in the second half as they barreled a maul over on the 39th minute with Charlie O’Shea sending the conversion straight through the uprights.

But Ulster bit back with a penalty in the 49th minute.

Just minute later Charlie O’Shea broke the Ulster defensive line and ran the length of the pitch to score a try of his own in the 50th minute. This putting Munster back in front by just two points at a crucial time.

But Ulster saw out the game with a penalty in the 57th minute and a drop goal in the 61st to finish out the game as 26-30 winners.
