Cork Constitution had to come from behind to maintain their unbeaten run at Belfield, while Garryowen proved too strong for UCC at the Mardyke in Division 1A of the All Ireland League as Highfield win the top of the table clash in Division 1B.
A late rally saw Cork Constitution defeat UCD at Belfield 29-25. Con’ were behind for long periods of this contest but tries Brian Hayes, Jack Costigan, Cathal O’Flaherty and Duncan Williams along with three conversions and a penalty from Gerry Hurley saw them take maximum points and extend their lead at the top to nine points.
Second placed Garryowen were always in control of their game away to U.C.C. at the Mardyke emerging victorious 15-7. Cian O’Shea, Colm Quilligan and Jamie Heuston scored tries for the visitors and Rory Suttor replied with a try for College which James Taylor converted.
Young Munster defeated bottom side Ballynahinch 35-21at Tom Clifford Park to move to within four points of a top four finish. Evan O’Gorman scored two tries for the Cookies and Harry Fleming and Jack Harrington got one each with Evan Cusack converting all four. They were also awarded a penalty try.
Highfield had to come from behind to defeat Old Wesley 26-13 in their top of the table clash in Division 1B at Woodleigh Park. Trailing 10-0 at the end of the first quarter, two tries from Ben Murphy and one each by Michael Shinkwin and Shane O’Riordan, who also kicked three conversions to give Highfield five crucial points in their bid to get automatic promotion.
Shannon maintained their challenge with a 28-25 win at Templeville Road against St. Mary’s College. Pa Ryan scored two tries and Alan Fitzgerald and Jamie McGarry got one each. John Bateman kicked one conversion and Ben Daly added three.
Old Crescent maintained their challenge for a play-off place in Division 2A with a 50-24 win over Bottom side Nenagh Ormond at Rosbrien.
Val McDermott was Crescent’s hero scoring four of his side’s eight tries. Jack O’Neill, Lorcan Kavanagh, Cathal O’Reilly and Gary Fitzgerald were the other try scorers, Shane Mullaney converted five of the tries.
Cashel came from 10-3 down at home to Buccaneers to defeat them 29-10 and keep their promotion hopes alive. James Ryan, Darragh Lyons, Luke Duffy and Richard Kingston scored tries for Cashel and Aidan McDonald kicked three conversions and a penalty.
U.L. Bohemian moved well away from the relegation zone with a 36-21 away win at Irish Independent Park against Dolphin. Jamie Shanahan scored two tries for the winners, Jamie McNamara , Dave O’Connor and Robbie Bourke got one each. Harry Byrne kicked four conversions and a penalty. Rob Reardon scored a try for Dolphin which Daryl Foley converted and they were also awarded two penalty tries.
Sunday’s Well have slipped out of the play off places in Division 2C after they lost away to second placed Skerries 13-3. Brian Derham kicked a penalty for the ‘Well.
Clonmel moved up to fifth after their 14-11 away win at Bruff. Neville Melbourne and Conor Pearson scored tries for Clonmel and Darren Cass converted both. Cian Clifford replied with a try for Bruff and Andrew Byrne kicked two penalties.
Midleton remain bottom of the division after their 28-14 home defeat by Tullamore. Brian Moore and Luke Obersby scored tries for Midleton and Stuart Lee converted both.
U.L. Bohemian have qualified for the Women’s All Ireland Cup Final after their 18-12 win over Railway Union at Park Avenue. A try from Alana McInerney and a penalty try put the Limerick side 12-0 ahead but Railway Union hit back to level before two penalties from Nicole Fitzgerald gave UL Bones their place in the decider against Old Belvedere.
There was no joy for Shannon in the Shield semi-final as they lost at Coonagh to Galwegians 29-0.
