All Ireland League Round Up

A winning start for three of the five Munster sides in Division 1A of the All Ireland League as newly promoted Shannon and UCC were denied a first round victory.
At Temple Hill, four second-half tries from Niall Kenneally (2), JJ O’Neill and Rob Jermyn earned Con’ a 27-7 win over Shannon. Aidan Moynihan kicked two conversions and a penalty. Ty Chan scored a try for Shannon and Jake Flannigan converted to give the Limerick side a 7-3 half-time lead.
A missed conversion by Dublin University in the last minute of the game denied Dublin University a share of the spoils at Dooradoyle as Garryowen ran out 27-25 winners. Darren Ryan, Jamie Gavin and Dave McCarthy scored tries for Garryowen and Peadar Collins converted all three and added two penalties.
Young Munster made a winning start with a 22-5 home win over Terenure thanks mainly to the boot of Clayton Stewart who kicked five penalties and converted Dara O’Neill’s try.
UCC making their debut in the top flight lost at Belfield to UCD 39-28. Ryan Murphy, James Taylor, Cian Barry and John Poland scored tries for College and Taylor converted all four tries.
Cashel are the early pace setters in Division 2A after their 34-20 away win over Old Crescent. Frank Kelleher, Richard Kingston, Alan McManus, Niall Fitzgerald and Aidan McDonald scored tries for Cashel and Monty Rae kicked three conversions and a penalty. Val McDermott replied with two tries for Crescent and Ronan McKenna converted both and added two penalties.
Highfield lost at home to Queens University 43-41 in a game that ended controversially. With the game in added time, the referee stopped play due to an injury to a player and while the player was receiving attention the referee blew full-time as the 80 minutes were up. Luke Kingston, Dave O’Sullivan, Michael Dillane, Dave O’Connell and Colm Gallagher scored tries for Highfield who were also awarded a penalty try. Shane O’Riordan kicked three conversions and a penalty.
UL Bohemian bounced back from last week’s defeat by Highfield with a 27-15 away win at Galwegians. Joey Conway, Niall O’Shea, Joe Murray and James McCarthy scored tries for Bohes and Robbie Bourke kicked a penalty and two conversions.
A Daryl Foley penalty was not enough for Dolphin who lost 23-3 at home to Navan.
Nenagh Ormond also suffered a home defeat losing 31-23 to Blackrock College. John Coffey, Patrick Scully and Ger McNamara scored tries for Nenagh and Alex Ropeti kicked a conversion and two penalties.
Sunday’s Well made it two wins from two the first time they did this in nine seasons after their 15-12 away win at Belfast Harlequins. James Kiernan scored a try for the ‘Well who were also awarded a penalty try and Peter O’Brien kicked a penalty.
Midleton recorded their second bonus point win with a 27-10 away win at Seapoint. They are now in second place behind leaders Bangor who top the table on points difference. These sides are due to meet next week at the Towns Park. Rob Carey scored two tries for Midleton and Benji Cottle and Louis Farnham got one each. Stuart Lee kicked a penalty and two conversions.
Bangor defeated Thomond at Upritchard Park 39-10 with Evan Cusack scoring a try, conversion and penalty for the visitors.
Bruff defeated City of Derry 45-15 to move off the foot of the table. Liam Barrett, Kevin McManus, Cillian Rea, Tom O’Dwyer, Eamon Costelloe, Paddy Cleary and Cian Tierney scored tries for Bruff and Tony Cahill kicked five conversions.
