All Ireland League Round Up

Cork Constitution made it three successful wins over Young Munster in recent weeks as Garryowen maintained their challenge in Division 1A of the All Ireland League as Shannon get back in the promotion race in Division 1B with an impressive win over Highfield.

Cork Constitution defeated Young Munster 18-3 at Temple Hill. A try from Brian Hayes and a Jack Crowley penalty gave Con’ an 8-0 interval lead. Barry Galvin added a second try and Crowley converted and added a penalty. Evan Cusack replied with a penalty for the visitors.

Garryowen got revenge for their 25-24 by UCD before Christmas with a 40-14 win over the students at Dooradoyle.

Garryowen turned on the style when they hit UCD for six tries. Diarmuid Barron was first on the scoresheet after fifteen minutes but the visitors hit back with a fine try by Matt Gilsenan which Tim Corkery converted.

Garryowen dominated the remainder of the half and led 20-7 at half time thanks to tries by Alex Wootton and Liam Coombes who touched down seconds from the break. McCarthy converted Wootton’s try.

The bonus point for Garryowen came five minutes into the second half when Barron had his second try which McCarthy again converted.

Brian Fitzgerald’s try was converted by John Hurley to make it 32-7. David Ryan pulled a try back for UCD which Corkery converted, but a second try by Wootton ensured a comfortable win for the home side.

Despite leading 10-7 away to Lansdowne at half time, the Cork students suffered another agonizing defeat going down 19-18. James Taylor and Killian Coughlan scored tries for College with Taylor adding a conversion and two penalties.

Shannon got back in contention for promotion from Division 1B after their impressive 31-13 win over leaders Highfield on the back pitch at Thomond Park. Eathon Moloney scored two tries for the winners and Jamie McGarry and Ikem Ugwueru also crossed the white wash. Jake Flannery kicked three conversions and a penalty and John Bateman also added a conversion. Highfield’s only try was scored by Tim Ryan which Shane O’Riordan converted and he also landed two penalties.

Old Crescent defeated Buccaneers 12-10 at Dubarry Park to move up to third place in Division 2A. Lorcan Kavanagh and Val McDermott scored tries for the Limerick side and Maccon Casserly kicked a conversion.

Cashel slipped from third to fifth after their 28-24 away defeat by U.L. Bohemian on the 4G pitch in UL. The sides were level 14-14 at half time. Darragh O’Grady scored two tries for UL Bohes and Harry Byrne converted both. Cashel replied with a try from James Kendrick, a penalty try and a conversion from Darragh Lyons. James Ryan put Cashel ahead with a try and a conversion and penalty by Lyons had Cashel 24-14 ahead entering the final quarter. Tries from Alan Kiely and Jamie McNamara both converted by Byrne earned the home side five valuable points in their push away from the relegation zone.

Leaders MU Barnhall defeated Dolphin 21-3 but were flattered by the score line. Daryl Foley kicked a penalty for Dolphin.

Nenagh Ormond are still bottom of the table after their 24-8 home defeat by Queen’s University. Conor O’Brien kicked a penalty for Nenagh and Keith Quigley scored a late try.

Sunday’s Well moved into the play-off places in Division 2C after their 19-7 home win over Omagh Academicals but are only three points away from the relegation zone. Graeme Lawlor scored two tries for the ‘Well and Eoin Geary got one. Brian Derham kicked two conversions.

An Andrew O’Byrne penalty was not enough for Bruff who lost away to Tullamore 13-3.

Midleton are still bottom after their 10-6 away defeat by City of Derry. Stuart Lee kicked two penalties for the East Cork side.

UL Bohemian continued their winning ways in the Women’s All Ireland League with a 29-14 away win over Old Belvedere. Chloe Pearse, Edel murphy, Kate Sheehan, Alana McInerney and Fiona Reidy scored tries. Rachel Allen and Nicole Fitzgerald each kicked a conversion.
