With just one round of games to be played in the Energia Men’s All-Ireland League, the battle for play-off places intensifies across all five Divisions as Nenagh Ormond claimed the Division 2A title and promotion to Division 1B next season.
With Lansdowne defeating leaders Clontarf in Division 1A, both defending champions Terenure and Cork Constitution moved into the top two positions to put them in pole position for a home semi-final tie.
Cork Constitution were pushed all the way at Temple Hill by Ballynahinch before emerging with a 10-7 victory. The sides were level 7-7 at half time. Matthew Bowen scored Con’s try and James Taylor converted and also kicked a penalty.
Shannon condemned Dublin University to Division 1B after their 37-22 win over Young Munster at Thomond Park. However they still could be involved in the relegation/promotion play-offs, should they fail to get a better result than City of Armagh in their final game. Stephen Kiely and Jordan Prenderville each scored two tries each and Daniel Okeke got one. Mike Cooke kicked three conversions and two penalties. James O’Brien scored two tries for Young Munster and James Horrigan got one. Tony Butler kicked two conversions and a penalty.
Garryowen and Highfield remain level on points in Division 1B, with Garryowen ahead on points difference. Garryowen had a 28-3 away win at Old Belvedere with tries from Colm Quilligan, Jack Oliver, Jeronimo Ureta Saenz Pena. Kelvin Langan kicked three penalties and two conversions.
Highfield finished their home campaign with a 22-7 win against Blackrock College. Ross Anthony O’Neill, Colin O’Neill, and James Rochford scored tries for Highfield and Shane O’Riordan converted all three.
UCC made certain of their place in this Division after their 48-7 home win over Bottom side Buccaneers, a result that will see the Athlone side playing in Division 2A next season. Jack O’Sullivan scored two of College’s seven tries, and Tom Coughlan, Jacob Sheahan, Adam Wrona, Andrew O’Mahony and David Kiely were the other try scorers. Cian Whooley kicked three conversions and a penalty, and Daniel Squires added two conversion.
Nenagh Ormond made sure of the Division 2A title with a convincing 27-12 home win over their nearest challengers MU Barnhall. Willie Coffey scored two tries for the Tipperary side, Derek Corcoran, John Healy, and Patrick Scully were the other try scorers. Josh Rowland kicked two conversions,
Cashel remain on course for a home semi-final play-off place after their 33-19 away win over bottom side Malone.
Old Crescent lost at home to Navan 24-19, a result that could see them miss out on a play-off place. Gareth Quinn McDonagh scored Crescent’s try and Ronan McKenna converted and added four penalties.
An injury time try denied Dolphin an away bonus point victory against Belfast Harlequins, a result that sees them bottom of Division 2B. Daryl Foley scored a try, four conversions and four penalties, while Sam Boyle and Cameron O’Shaughnessy were among their try scorers.
Bruff made certain of their place in the promotion play-offs from Division 2C with a 26-21 away win at Enniscorthy. Paul Collins scored two tries and three conversions, with Sean O’Riordan, and Brendan Gleeson also crossing the whitewash.
Midleton lost at home to Galwegians 43-17. Johannes du Toit scored two tries for Midleton and Killian Lynch got one, with Conall Doyle adding one conversion.
Clonmel lost at home to bottom side Bangor 38-31. Ben Everard, Conor Hogan, Diarmuid Devaney, and Luke Hogan scored tries for Clonmel. Josef O’Connor converted all four tries and also kicked a penalty.
In the Women’s All Ireland League Ballincollig lost at home to Blackrock College 42-5, with Gemma Lane scoring Ballincollig’s try.
