Cork Constitution emerged victorious in the big Munster derby, as Nenagh Ormond moved into pole position in Division 1B and Midleton take top spot in Division 2C after the third round series of games in the Men’s All Ireland League.
In appalling weather conditions Cork Constitution inflicted a first defeat of the season on Young Munster with a 25-5 win at Temple Hill. Playing with the elements in the opening half, James Taylor kicked two early penalties for the home side and tries from Sean French and Adam Maher, both converted by Taylor gave Con’ a 20-0 interval lead. A try by Matthew Bowen minutes into the second half extended the Temple Hill side’s advantage before a try from Eoin McCormack in the dying embers of the game was the Limerick side’s only response.
City of Armagh recorded their first win in the topflight with a 13-6 victory over Garryowen at Dooradoyle. Two second half penalties by Kelvin Langan secured a losing bonus point for the Limerick side.
A late fight back by Nenagh Ormond that saw them earn a share of the spoils at Donnybrook with a 22-22 draw against Old Wesley thanks to a try from Patrick Scully, sees them take over as leaders in Division 1B. Two tries from Angus Blackmore and one by Conor O’Shaughnessy were the Tipperary side’s other try scorers. Conor McMahon kicked one conversion.
U.C.C. moved up to fourth place after an impressive 50-14 away win against Queens University. Adam Wrona, Darragh French, Evan Clarke, Conor Ryan, Mike Cogan, Jason Aherne and Sean Condon were the Cork side’s try scorers. Dan Squires kicked six conversions and a penalty.
Shannon suffered a 23-18 home defeat to Naas. Cian O’Halloran and Harry Long scored tries for Shannon. John O’Sullivan kicked two penalties and a conversion.
Cashel had a 43-0 convincing away win at Buccaneers in Division 2A to move into third place. Brendan Ryan, Brendan Crosse, Richard Moran, Josh Pickering (2) scored tries for Cashel who were also awarded a penalty try. Tom Townsend kicked three conversions and a penalty, and Ben Twomey added a conversion.
A late penalty by Ronan McKenna saw Old Crescent snatch a 13-12 win against Banbridge at Rosbrien. Brandon Nash scored Old Crescent’s try and McKenna converted and kicked two penalties.
U.L. Bohemian moved up to third place in Division 2B after late tries from Alan Kiely and Kian Ryan saw them defeat Rainey 17-15. Oisin Fagan kicked two conversions and a penalty.
Midleton ended Ballyclare’ great run with a 20-10 win at the Towns Park, a result that saw them take over as leaders in Division 2C. Ryan Hogan scored two tries for the East Cork side and Gary Downey and Idris Rqibi got one each.
Dolphin were held to a 10-10 draw away to Clonmel. A try by Scott Sexton and converted by Jordan Soli gave Dolphin a 7-0 interval lead. Soli added a penalty in the second half for the visitors. A penalty, try and a conversion by Josef O’Conner helped Clonmel to draw level.
Bruff lost at home to Belfast Harlequins 7-5, despite John Bateman giving Bruff the lead early in the second half.
In the Women’s All Ireland League, the meeting of the top two sides saw Railway Union defeat defending champions U.L. Bohemian 19-18. Eilis Cahill scored two tries for Bohs and Kate Flannery kicked two penalties and a conversion.
Ballincollig and Suttonians played out a 10-10 draw at Tanner Park. Aoibheann McGrath and Kate O’Sullivan scored tries for Ballincollig.
