It was not a good day for the Munster teams in Division 1 of the All-Ireland League, except for both Highfield and Shannon who both won in their battle to stay in this Division.
Cork Constitution’s 28-12 home defeat by Lansdowne in Division 1A, sees them in a battle to qualify for the play-offs. Sean French and George Good were the Con try scorers and James Taylor added one conversion.
Young Munster lost away to Ballynahinch 28-15 with Aaron Roulston and Ihechi Oji scoring tries for the Limerick sider and Julian Leszczynski kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Garryowen are on the verge of a quick return to Division 1B after they suffered a 64-22 home defeat by St. Mary’s College. Tom Wickham, Max Clein and Dean Fanning were the Garryowen try scorers and Jack Oliver added two conversions and a penalty.
Old Belvedere’s 34-22 home win over second placed Nenagh Ormond in Division 1B was enough to guarantee them the title and automatic promotion to Division 1A next season. Davey Gleeson scored two tries for Nenagh and Angus Blackmore one, with Conor McMahon kicking two conversions and a penalty.
U.C.C.’s hopes of making the play-offs received a major set back as they lost away to Shannon 20-10, with the winning scores coming in the final minutes of the game. A try by Cian McCann converted by Jamie Gavin gave the hosts a 7-0 interval lead. Gavin added a penalty early in the second half but a try by Michael Cogan and a conversion and penalty by Darragh French brought the Cork students level. A penalty by John O’Sullivan and a conversion of a second try by McCann was enough to give Shannon the spoils.
Highfield defeated high flying Blackrock College 30-21 at Woodleigh Park but are four points off safety with three games left to play. Eoin Dorgan scored two tries for the home side and Jamie Shanahan one. Shane O’Riordan converted all three tries and also kicked three penalties.
In Division 2A, Cashel’s 31-13 away win at Ballymena sees them move up to second place, but ten points behind leaders Instonians. Marcel Strydom scored two of Cashel’s five tries, with Ryan O’Sullivan, Marcello Frati and Josh Pickering getting the others. Ben Twomey added three conversions.
Old Crescent lost 22-17 at home to Galway Corinthians and are just six points clear of the relegation zone. Niall Hardiman scored Crescent’s try and Ronan McKenna kicked four penalties.
U.L. Bohemian’s 27-21 home win over Clogher Valley at Annacotty kept their play-off hopes alive from Division 2B. David Rowsome scored two tries for the winners, and Sean Quirke and Oisin Fagan got one each. Fagan kicked two conversions and a penalty.
The battle between the top two sides in Division 2C, saw leaders Midleton extend their advantage to six points over Enniscorthy after their 29-26 win at the Towns Park. Aaron Leahy scored two tries for Midleton and Flor McCarthy, Sam Tarleton, and Andrew Beyrooti get one each. Kyle Read kicked two conversions.
Dolphin moved back into the play-off places after their 24-17 bonus point win in Tullamore. Karl Waterman, Scott Sexton, Cameron O’Shaughnessy and Jordan Soli were the Dolphin try scorers and Soli converted two of the tries.
Clonmel slipped to sixth place after their 24-21 home defeat by Monkstown. Freddie Davies scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Jason Monua got one. Josef O’Connor converted all three tries.
Bruff’s 34-32 home defeat by Ballyclare sees them six points clear of the relegation places. Mike Frawley, Brendan Gleeson, Cillian Rea and Mark Kennedy scored tries for Bruff and Paul Collins kicked three conversions, a penalty and a drop goal.
