Bandon Win Junior League
25th March 2018 By The Editor
Bandon have won their second Munster Junior League title with a 41 – 24 win at home to Newcastle West in their final league game and finished ahead of Richmond on the number of games won as both sides finished level on points.
Great credit for this success must go to Bandon’s Coach Régis Sonnes who joined the club last season and helped them to their first Munster Junior Cup success and has now followed it up with a league title. Ahead of them is the All Ireland Provincial League Championship next month where victory will see Bandon in the All Ireland League next season.
For next season whatever level Bandon will be playing at, they will have to have a new Coach as Sonnes has indicated he will be returning to France next season.
Bandon went into this game knowing that a bonus point victory would see them finish ahead of Richmond on the most number of wins rule and they had secured the bonus point after thirty minutes with tries from Olan Crowley, Scott Kingston, Enda Phelan and Billy Crowley.
Ross Harold and Santiago Gonzales added further tries for a 36-0 half time lead. Kerry Desmond kicked two conversions and Crowley one.
Gonzales added another try after the break but Newcastle West managed to score four tries two from Sean Murphy and one each by Sean O’Herlihy and Damien Kelly with O’Herlihy converting two.
However that bonus point was not enough for Newcastle West to guarantee them a place in next season’s All Ireland Junior Cup.
Sixty three tries were scored on the final day of games in Division 1 but the relegation issue has yet to be decided because of outstanding games.
