The Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Challenge Cup continued at the weekend with Young Munster, Cashel, Cork Con and Highfield all making it through their respective quarter-final ties.

In an exciting game at Thomond Park, Young Munster edged out Shannon 23-17. Evan Cusack opened the scoring with a penalty for “The Cookies” but two penalties from Bill Gray put the home side in front. A Cusack penalty had the sides tied 6-6 at half-time.

Gray put Shannon back in front with his third penalty but a Luke Fitzgerald try converted by Cusack edged the visitors ahead.

A Gray penalty and a try by Jordan Prenderville made it 17-13 entering the final quarter. Young Munster finished the stronger with a Jordan Stewart try and a conversion and a penalty from Cusack.

Young Munster will face Cashel in next week’s semi-final after the Tipperary side came from behind to defeat UL Bohemian 10-7 at the 4G UL pitch.

A try and conversion by Alan Kiely gave UL Bohs’ the lead but a try by Keith Melbourne converted by Aidan McDonald had the sides level at half-time.

A penalty from McDonald midway through the second-half decided the contest.

Holders Cork Constitution booked their semi-final place with a 9-7 home win over Garryowen in a repeat of last season’s decider. Aidan Moynihan kicked three penalties for the Temple Hill side and Andrew O’Byrne replied with a try for Garryowen and Peadar Collins converted.

Highfield will now travel to Temple Hill next week after their 30-29 victory over UCC at the Mardyke after extra time thanks to a try from Paul Stack midway through the second period of extra time.

In a game that was a great advert for the competition, Mia Cronin, Eddie Earle and Mark Dorgan were Highfield’s other try scorers and Shane O’Riordan kicked two conversions and two penalties.

Murray Linn scored two tries for College and Louis Kahn and John Poland got one each. Eoin Monahan converted three of the tries and also added a penalty in added time to send the game into extra time.
