Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Challenge Cup Winners 2021

Cashel caused the shock of the round in the opening games in the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup, as Highfield were the only Cork side to book a quarter final place.

Cashel knocked out Shannon 18-17 in a thrilling tie at the Spafield with the lead changing hands on six occasions. John O’Sullivan opened the scoring with a penalty for Shannon. Cashel replied quickly with a try from Mikey Wilson but two penalties from O’Sullivan had the visitors 9-5 ahead at half time. A try from Adam Dunne put Cashel back in front. A Jack O’Donnell try restored Shannon’s advantage 14-10. Alan McMahon and O’Sullivan exchanged penalties before McMahon struck with a late try in injury time, but Shannon had a final chance to win the game, but their penalty attempt was wide of the posts.

Holders Young Munster edged out Cork Constitution 19-12 at Tom Clifford Park. Evan Cusack opened the scoring with a penalty for the home side. Ross O’Neill replied with a try for Con’. A try from Adam Maher and a second Cusack penalty gave Young Munster an 11-5 half time lead. Conor Hayes extended “the Cookies” lead with a try but Barry Galvin hit back with a Con’ try, which Aidan Moynihan converted to keep the visitors in touch. Hayes completed the scoring with a penalty for the home side.

Junior side Kilfeacle came very close to causing a shock at Rosbrien but went down 17-14 to Old Crescent. Ronan McKenna opened the scoring with a penalty for Old Crescent  but two penalties from Willie Staunton had Kilfeacle ahead 6-3 at the interval. Staunton added his third penalty before Jake Considine restored the home side’s advantage  with a try and McKenna converted. Gavin Heuston put Kilfeacle back in front with a try but a try from Dan Hurley converted by McKenna ensured Crescent’s passage into the next round.

Garryowen proved too strong for U.C.C. at the Mardyke winning 45-12. Jamie Shanahan and Dylan Murphy scored two tries each for the winners and Hugh O’Brien Cunningham, Jack Delaney and Bryan Fitzgerald got one each. Jamie Heuston kicked two penalties and a conversion and Tony Butler also added a conversion. Sam Tarleton and Jack O’Sullivan replied with tries for College and George Coomber also added a conversion.

U.L. Bohemian had to withstand a late rally from Dolphin before booking their place in the last eight with a 24-21 victory at the 4GUL Arena. A penalty from Harry Byrne and a penalty try had the home side ahead 10-0 at half time. Cameron O’Shaughnessy brought Dolphin back into the game with a converted try. Jamie McNamara put Bohes further ahead with a try which Byrne converted, before Dolphin were awarded a penalty try. Mateo Ibanez scored Bohes third try with Byrne adding the extras. A late try by Alex Deby which was converted closed the gap but time ran out on a Dolphin recovery.

Highfield had a facile 53-7 win over Sunday’s Well at Musgrave Park. Miah Cronin (2), Colin O’Neill, Paul Stack, Gavin O’Leary, Travis Coomey, Luke Kingston, Sam Burns and Dave O’Connell were Highfield’s try scorers. James Taylor added four conversions. Kieran Lannen replied with a try for the ‘Well and Rob Egar converted.

Nenagh Ormond will face Cashel in next week’s quarter finals after their 20-7 home win over Midleton. A penalty by Fionn McGibney gave Nenagh a 3-0 interval lead. Conor McMahon and Derek Corcoran  scored tries for the Tipperary side and McGibney converted both and also added a penalty. Julian Power replied with a try for Midleton which Stuart Lee converted.

Two tries in the opening seven minutes from Luke Hogan, one of which Aidan Hickey converted gave Clonmel  a great start in their cup tie at Bruff. The home side rallied and had tries from Sean Hartigan, Tomas Quigley, Mark Fitzgerald and Stephen Collins. Andrew O’Byrne kicked a penalty and a conversion to earn Bruff a 25-12 victory and a home tie against Garryowen next week.

Next Week’s quarter final line up is Bruff v Garryowen, Nenagh Ormond v Cashel, Old Crescent v Highfield and Young Munster v U.L. Bohemian.

In the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Plate competition Clonmel v U.C.C., Cork Constitution v Dolphin, Kilfeacle v Sunday’s Well and Midleton v Shannon.
