Big Weekend for Crosshaven RFC – Junior Rugby Preview

Cup rugby dominates a quite weekend of Junior Rugby because of the Six Nations game in the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.

The All Ireland Junior Cup semi finals are the big games this weekend with Crosshaven aiming to become the second Munster side to reach the final since Youghal did in the inaugural year of the competition in 2006.

The Seasiders face a very difficult tie against Sligo a side that look destined to win the Connacht Junior League next week and a place in the All Ireland Ulster Bank League next season.
Both these sides have been impressive in reaching this stage of the competition. Crosshaven defeated Dundalk 49-24 in the opening round and followed it up with a 36-15 win over Dromore with both games being played away from home. Sligo also had impressive wins to this stage of the competition with a 19-11 away win over Tullamore and than they defeated a fancied City of Armagh side 24-21 at home in the last round.
While Crosshaven have a few injury worries they possess a side with plenty of experience and youth. Merle O’Connell has returned after a few seasons with Cork Constitution and with Rob Barry and Jake Grey in the pack they will be expected to win the battle up front with the youthful Cian McGovern and Darren O’Keeffe in the backs, products of their recent successful Youth side, will pounce on any gaps.
With the largest crowd ever to watch a rugby game at this venue expected, there should be little between the sides at the finish.

The other semi final is between Cooke and Monivea at Shaws Bridge and the Connacht side will be eager to reach the decider to make up for a disappointing season.

There are three Munster Junior Cup ties to be decided. Fermoy play Dungarvan under the lights at the North Cork venue on Friday night and despite successive defeats in the last two weeks Fermoy should get back to winning ways.

Two other Third Division sides square up to each other on Saturday at Moneygourney, with Douglas entertaining Scariff. The Clare side are having a very good season and are in a good position for promotion. After a poor start Douglas are coming good and could inflict a rare defeat on the Clare side.

On Sunday Shannon travel to Ennis in a game that kicks off at 1.00. Shannon were very lucky to see off the challenge of Kanturk in the last round, while Ennis defeated Nenagh 16-9 and will be looking to cause another shock.

There are three league ties down for decision in the Munster Junior League. Galbally can go back to the top of Division Two with an away victory over Newport and continue their unbeaten run this season.

Mallow play host to Bandon and the visitors boosted by their win over Kinsale last time out will be anxious to pick up some more points as they aim to move further away from the foot of the table.

In Division Three Abbeyfeale host Kilrush and the home side must win if they are to get back into the promotion race.

At Junior Two level Cashel and Shannon are due to play their Gleeson League final and the Webb Cup gets under way with seven ties listed.
