Bowen Shield & McCarthy Cup Get Underway

The opening games in the Bowne Shield (Under 17) and McCarthy Cup (Under 15) got the Schools rugby competitive season under way.

Defending champions Crescent College Comprehensive opened their campaign with a 10-5 home defeat by C.B.C. Paul O’Sullivan scored a try for the Limerick side and Christians replied with a try from Cian Barry and a conversion and penalty by Jamie Murphy.

St Munchin’s defeated Glenstal Abbey in an entertaining game 22-20. Matt Ryan, Willie McGann and Jamie McAleese were try scorers for Glenstal and McAleese kicked a conversion and penalty.

Ard Scoil Ris were 35-13 winners at home to St. Clements. Shane Fenton, Andrew Leyden, Paul McNamara and Kelvin Browne were among the scorers for Ard Scoil. Carl Clifford replied with a try for Clements and Conor Redmond kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Holders Ard Scoil Ris started their McCarthy Cup campaign with a narrow 22-15 win against St. Clements. Glen Clancy scored two tries for the winners and Ronan Coffee and Gerard Kearns got one apiece. Evan Cusack added one conversion. Peter Harrington, Cathal Quinlan and Jamie Dillon replied with tries for Clements's.

Bandon Grammar and Castletroy College had a hard fought battle in their McCarthy Cup tie at Bandon with the visitors coming out on top 34-20. With both side level 20-20 going into the last 20 minutes, late tries from Darragh O’Neill and Shane Mullins sealed victory for Castletroy and both were converted by Dara Neville. Castletroy had early tries from Matthew Hartigan and Niall Loughan. Bandon try scorers were Sam Coleman, Robin Stokes, and Ben Gur. Sean Hudson kicked a penalty and a conversion

Christians defeated Crescent 33-19. Oisin Conway scored three tries for the winners and Cillian O’Sullivan and Darragh McGann each scored a try. James Taylor kicked three conversions and Conway one. Crescent replied with two tries from Edwin Wixted and one by Jack Henchy. Brian Ryan added two conversions.

In the other game St Munchin’s defeated Glenstal 59-10. Jason Kiely, Aaron Rice, Stephen O’Shaughnessy, Kealon McMahon and Thomas Grace were amongst the scorers for the Corbally College. Sean Hammond and Paddy Moloney replied with tries for Glenstal.
