CBC Beat Munchin’s in Avonmore Schools Junior Cup
18th February 2011 By Munster Rugby
Christian Brothers College made a winning start to their Avonmore Milk Munster Junior Cup campaign with a one point win over St. Munchin’s at rain swept Rosbrien.
St. Munchin’s 11, C.B.C. 12
The Cork College certainly had lady luck on their side with three players sin binned and were reduced to thirteen for part of the game. Despite playing into the elements in the second half Munchin’s had a great chance of winning the game when in the final minute they were awarded a penalty on the Twenty Two from a kickable position but Mark Long was off target with his effort.
Playing against the elements in the opening half, it was Munchin’s who opened the scoring with a try after three minutes when the ball was moved across the back line and Mark Long was on hand to score in the corner.
Christians were level within three minutes when after a series of drives at the try line, hooker Niall O’Leary touched down.
The Munchin’s pack controlled matters for long periods and it was no surprise when they went ahead with a penalty from Ryan Meagher.
The Cork side hit back immediately and took the lead on twenty one minutes with winger Darren Lee scoring in the corner and Thomas Quinlan expertly converted from the touch line for a 12-8 half time lead.
Christians were reduced to thirteen approaching half time but Munchin’s could not capitalise on their extra numerical strength.
Munchin’s only reply after the break was another penalty from Meagher and the nearest they came to another score was the last minute penalty miss.
