CBC & Crescent Battle It Out For Top Prize
11th March 2016 By Munster Rugby
The 107th Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup final will take place on Sunday, 13th March at Irish Independent Park (ko 2pm), in a much anticipated meeting between Christian Brothers College and Crescent College Comprehensive.
In an outstanding season for both schools, CBC and Crescent College Comprehensive have also booked their place in the Junior Cup final, with the prospect of achieving a unique double in their sights.
The 2016 Senior Cup decider will be the first year a Cork and Limerick school will go head to head since Castletroy’s win over CBC in 2008 and promises, as ever, to be a competition finale not to be missed.
The sides will meet for the second time in this year’s campaign having previously met in the opening round at Thomond Park Stadium, which saw the Cork side come out on top with a 17-5 victory.
Crescent College Comprehensive reached the final through the back door system beating Glenstal Abbey School, Rockwell College and Castletroy College along the way.
Interestingly CBC and Crescent are the only two schools that have won the cup through the back door system since it was first introduced by the Munster Schools Committee in 2009.
CBC were the first winners of the trophy in 1909 and share the honours of most Cup wins with their local rivals PBC with 28 titles apiece. CBC and PBC played out this year’s gripping semi final at Irish Independent Park, with the Sidney Hill side claiming a one point win.
CBC’s last appearance in the Munster final was against Rockwell College in 2009 when they won the cup under the captaincy of Brian Hayes
Crescent College have 11 titles to their credit with two doubles claimed in 1989 and 1990 and more recently in 2013 and 2014.
This season, led by Munster and Ireland U18 Schools centre Calvin Nash, the Dooradoyle side quickly bounced back in style since there mid-January opening clash against Sunday’s opponents and with such a distinguished prize within their grasp, revenge may play its part as motivation and it should prove to be an even more intense battle than the last time out.
Like all Munster Schools Senior Cup finals, it promises to be an occasion not to be missed and with two very talented and attack orientated sides competing, a spectacular showcase of rugby is guaranteed.
