CBC Defeat Glenstal Abbey School to Claim Semi Final Place
10th February 2007 By Munster Rugby
Christian Brothers College Cork had a 13-6 victory over a gritty Glenstal Abbey School side in Clanwilliam on Saturday to claim the last semi final place in this year’s Avonmore Milk Munster Schools Senior Cup
Glenstal Abbey School 6-13 Christian Brothers College Cork
With defending champions St. Munchin’s College awaiting them in the semi final, the Cork side will be aiming to return to winning ways and go onto claim the title last won by the school in 2003.
While the playing conditions were good in Clanwilliam, it was a very physical game from start to finish, with Glenstal Abbey certainly putting it up to CBC and competing in every aspect. CBC went ahead after 24 minutes, with hooker Andrew Cudmore crossing the line, and Odhran Mulrooney converting to put them 7-0 ahead. Six minutes later Mulrooney added another three points to their lead with a successful penalty kick, and CBC held onto their 10-0 lead going into the break. Five minutes after the restart, Glenstal put their first points on the board with a penalty kick from outhalf Danny O’ Shea finding its target. CBC stretched their lead to ten points once more just four minutes later with Mulrooney again on target. A gritty Glenstal side certainly tested CBC throughout, and a 57th minute penalty kicked by O’ Shea brought them back within range going into the final stages. Despite their best efforts, the converted try which would have given them a draw eluded them, and CBC claimed a well earned victory. It was a great team effort from Glenstal Abbey School, with the imposing 6 foot 5 flanker Ian Nagle, who is a current member of the Irish U19 squad, certainly catching the eye. For CBC, experienced campaigner Chris Nolan at scrum half was a key player, testing the Glenstal Abbey defence throughout.
Already through to the semi finals are Crescent College Comprehensive, who will meet Presentation Brothers College in the semi final, and defending champions St. Munchin’s College who defeated Castletroy College to clinch their semi final place.
