CBC & Rockwell Advance In Junior Cup
17th January 2018 By Leonard Allen
Holders CBC and Rockwell have qualified for the last eight of the Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Junior Cup after wins in their opening round games.
Christians made a winning start to their campaign with a 25-3 win at Lansdowne.
The Limerick side made the better start and they opened the scoring after four minutes when Christopher Guerin slotted over a long range penalty from outside the CBC ten-metre line.
CBC promptly began to turn the screw and Eoin Birchall barged over in the corner for their first try in the ninth minute, following a ruck deep inside the visitors’ 22. George Coomber’s conversion attempt from a difficult angle fell short of the posts.
Midway through the opening half, Guerin missed a penalty for the Limerick side while bad handling in scoring positions was proving to be costly for the Sydney Hill College in the second quarter.
Despite facing the wind in the second half Christians upped the pace of their game and Coomber increased their advantage to five points with a penalty inside the Ard Scoil Rís 22 in the 35th minute.
Five minutes later, the ball was spread out to Patrick O’Hara for the home side’s second try following a lineout deep inside the Ard Scoil Rís 22 and Coomber converted.
Handling errors short of the line prevented Ard Scoil Rís from producing further scores midway through the second-half.
Tries in the corner from Birchall and O’Hara in the final quarter put the game beyond the Limerick side’s reach.
