Rampant Performance Secures Bonus Point Win: Tralee 0 – 38 Newcastle West
It was back to the league last Sunday and that old statement of forwards win games and backs decide by how much came home. Tralee had defeated us in our last two league meetings and this was the challenge thrown down to the team before the kick-off.
It was a battle up front early and the visitors were dominant in the set piece both at scrum and line-out where Gary O Donnell was cleaning up on both ours and their ball.Conor was receiving good quality ball and a move along the back line allowed James Kelly in for our first try which Sean Herlihy converted on fourteen minutes.
With Declan, Sean Corbett and rock solid in the front row, a carry from the back of the scrum by Richard Langford saw him give a well-timed off load to Captain Sean Herlihy who went over just right of the post for a try which he converted himself. Richard Langford sustained and injury in this move which saw him replaced by Mike McMahon.
Sean was putting in some great up and unders and it was from one of these that was collected by Gary O'Donnell on the run passing to Dave Foley then to Stephen who went over in the corner on thirty five minutes.
It was all the visitors up to half-time and the teams turned with NCW leading by 19-0.
The score of the game came in the fiftieth minute when a great line out throw from Sean Corbett hit Gary who passed off the top to Sean, he went straight for their number ten and from the ensuing ruck Conor Whelan received the ball and a forty yard cross kick in to the hands of Stephen Kelly saw him run sixty yard to touch down under the posts which Sean Herlihy converted.
The visitors were in total control and could have scored at will but made a number of unforced errors until the sixtieth minute when all ran right and Sean Neville got a try from great work by the forwards and backs together.
Conor Whelan was to have the final say in the game when continuous pressure on the Tralee back line saw them knock the ball straight to his boot, he then dribbled it over the line and touch down for a try which he converted himself.
Man of the match goes to Davy Foley, with Gary O'Donnell and Conor Whelan snapping at his heels for the honor.
A bonus pint win on the road is never easy but after our woes of the last few weeks it was great to resume normal service with a win.
We are entering a vital stage of our season where who wants this league more will be defined by those willing to make the sacrifices required to take things to another level.
Thank you again to the travelling support who continue to outnumber the home supporters everywhere we go.

Bonus Point Win For The Blues
On Sunday last Kilfeacle RFC welcomed Muskerry RFC to Morrissey Park for a Munster Junior League fixture.
Playing conditions on the day helped an open game of rugby with only a slight fog threatening. This was expected to be an attritional affair, with the away team having a reputation for a very strong forward pack and
Kilfeacle started the stronger of the two teams and showed great hunger all over the field in attack and defence. The hunger was converted to points after 9 minutes, when Conor Hartigan intercepted on the halfway line and made a break to get the touchdown in the corner. With just two further minutes on the clock Diarmaid Carr followed up with another well worked try in the corner.
This came on the back of some exceptional breaks by the forward pack and good support running by Ger Luby and Dave Kiersey. Both conversions were missed to leave the score 10-0 on the quarter hour. The next 20 minutes was made up of very physical rugby from both teams. Great defensive play prevailed as both teams knew the next score was going to be vital in the eventual outcome of the game. On the 34th minute however, the only negative event, on what was otherwise a tough, clean game, was witnessed. Muskerry's out-half was shown a straight red card for kicking a player on the ground.
The 2nd half promised to be a tight affair, as both sides still knew the next score was going to be critical. Muskerry started the brighter and forced sustained pressure on the Kilfeacle which seemed inevitable to bring the away side back in to the game. However in the 59th minute Kilfeacle turned over a ball from a scrum, 5 metres from their line.
This gave the team and the crowd a huge boost. Two minutes later this boost was converted into points as Conor Hartigan collected a cross field kick from Darren Lowry to touch down in the corner. The conversion was missed to leave the scoreline 15-0. In the 69th minute Muskerry did however score a well deserved try from a scrum which was quickly converted. This left the tie still in the melting pot. With only two minutes left in the game though, Kilfeacle managed to work their way down the field, gaining territory with every phase, only for Pat Ryan to score a try after Gavin Heuston broke from the back of a maul.
Darren Lowry duly converted to leave the final score 22-7. This was a very impressive bonus point performance from the home team. It was evident from the numbers training during the week that this game was targeted as a season – changer.
Kilfeacle U-14
The score in this East Munster Quarter Final was Kilfeacle 41-27 Clonmel. This game was played in Kilfeacle in perfect conditions. Kilfeacle have now qualified for the semi final. Notable performers on the day were Ryan Rennihan, Darragh Kennedy, Connor Farrell, Liam Crowe, Alan Flannery, Tiernan Fogarty, Bob Purcell, Adam Crowe and Danny Ryan.

Munster Junior League Division 2: Ballincollig 9 – 23 Waterford City
City got their 3rd win in a row in Division 2 with an excellent away performance in Cork. In recent weeks the side has made a habit of starting slowly but there were no such problems this week as the team scored the opening try after only 4 minutes. The Waterford team started brightly and Michael Hayes breached the Ballincollig defence with a grubber kick in behind, Michael was able to get on the end of his own kick and touch down for a nice try under the posts.
City dominated the first half with a superb opening half-hour where they hardly put a foot wrong, the pack overpowered the Ballincollig scrum and were getting over the gain line nearly every time with impressive carries. The work rate from the forwards and Simon O'Hara in particular was impressive, throughout the game this established momentum for the backs and forwards to link up well, they consistently found gaps in a overwhelmed home defence.
The home team kicked a lot of possession away which was well fielded by Nicky Jacob who beat numerous defenders when counter attacking. A second try was coming with City playing so well and with 20 minutes on clock, it was Danny May who spotted a gap around the ruck to dart through to score under the posts again and City led 14-0. The two teams then traded penalties before some indiscipline from City led to a yellow card and Ballincollig converted a second penalty to trail 17-6 at the break.
Just after City had got one back from the sin bin, they lost another to a harsh yellow card for an infringement at the line out. Ballincollig kicked the resulting penalty and were getting back into the game at 17-9 while playing against 14 men. Waterford City though won a crucial turnover through their captain Dave O'Connor when the home team were starting to apply some pressure and the away team then went on to finish strongly, they shut out the game in the final 20 minutes with a controlled performance.
City won 2 more penalties which Michael Hayes kicked well to kill off the challenge from Ballincollig. Congratulations to Stephen Walsh on his first appearance for the team and Dave O'Connor for a man of the match performance.
Junior 2 South League Section C: Carrick 19 – 17 Waterford City
Despite a fantastic effort from City they came out on the wrong end of the result as they lost to Carrick away. The losing bonus point though was some deserved return for a team which had to play much of the game with 14 men due to some injuries. Aiden Power scored 2 tries for City and Liam McCarthy continued his impressive form of late with a third City try.
U-16s Cup Quarter Final: Waterford City 19 – 3 Kilfeacle
Kilfeacle travelled down to Killbarry for this quarter final match and opened the scoring with a well struck penalty in a very stop start game. City finally scored from a 10 metre scrum. Padrig Mahan broke from the base of the scrum to touch down, 5-3 to city. Just before half time City were awarded a penalty right in front of the posts. Lorcan Lynch kicked the penalty to leave the score at halftime 8-3 to City.
After stern words at the break, City finally started to get their game going, and after a few phases of play, Conal Roche broke through the defence for a fine team try. 13-3 to City. To their credit Kilfeacle came storming back and put City under intense pressure for 10 minutes but with some resolute defending on their own line, City managed to clear their lines through scrum half Luke Cronin. After a loose kick from Kilfeacle, Cian Lally and captain Noah Mellors combined to run the ball back, and scored the best try of the day, with Noah Mellors touching down under the posts.

Munster Junior League
It was back to the familiar territory of Munster Junior League rugby for the Clonmel 1st XV on Sunday last when we hosted Cork side Skibbereen in round six of this season's league. After last weekend's break from active duty for the senior squad, there was no shortage of enthusiasm from the team and supporters alike to get back to the action on what was again a lovely day in Clonmel for playing rugby. The Clonmel side were going into the game with a solid track record of 5 wins from 5 in the campaign to date and still trailing league leaders Newcastle West who retain the top spot by a slender one point margin. Luke Hogan in action
From the off, Clonmel were on the attack and an early infringement by Skibbereen in the opening minutes presented Conor Cooney with the opportunity to notch up some early points. He duly obliged with a well taken penalty which put down a marker for the visitors.
The momentum was maintained by the home side when David Lonergan secured possession and made a great run down the sideline and went in under the posts for the game's opening try. Cooney followed up with the conversion and a 10-0 lead opened up within the first 10 minutes. Two penalties for the visitors and one for Clonmel brought the score to 13-6 before Neville Melbourne, on the back of a great drive by the forwards, scored the game's second try for the home side. The successful conversion followed and the teams went into the break with the host side leading 20-6.

The 1st XV were away to Cork Con on Saturday night in the quarter final of the MSC. The last time the 2 teams met at this stage of the competition was in 2010 when Bruff emerged victorious on a score line of 11-5.

Bruff were down 18-8 at half time with Cons running in 3 tries and landing 2 penalties. Bruff replied with a penalty from Paul Downes and a Try from No 8 Danny Keogh. Bruff played a lot of good rugby in the closing 10 minutes of the opening half and were unlucky not to be closer at the break.
Bruff defended well in the 2nd half but were unable to hold Cons out for the full half with Cons running in 2 more try's before full time was blown.

Thurles First XV: Killarney RFC 8 – 41 Thurles
The Thurles Senior XV moved up to 3rd place in Division 2 of the Munster Junior League with a convincing victory over a Killarney side struggling near the foot of the table. Thurles travelled to the Kingdom minus a handful of regulars due to work commitments; fortunately the Tipp side were able to welcome a few long term injury casualties back into the match day squad, which kept disruption to a minimum.
Thurles came into this game full over confidence having run in 11 tries in their previous outing against Youghal in the quarter final of the Munster Challenge Plate. This game played on a beautiful November day, perfect for rugby, was a very evenly matched contest for the first quarter of the game, with the only score being an early penalty from the home side.
Thurles kept putting pressure on the Killarney line and were starting to get on top in the pack, with Emmet Kavanagh, Ger McCormack and Phil Kelly all looking for work and getting over the gain line a number of times. Thurles eventually got on the score board, with some fantastic hands down the blind side from Larry O'Gorman and Donnacha Duggan put Eoghan O'Dwyer in for a very well worked try which was converted by Aidan Dwyer for a 3-7 scoreline approaching half time.
Thurles were clearly boosted by this score, as all their pressure had paid off. A lineout was the result of a very sloppy kick off from the Killarney men. Thurles won their own lineout and Larry O'Gorman, who was standing as first receiver, barged his way past a number of would be tacklers, to find his way well into the red zone. The Thurles support was quickly in, to present clean ball for Nicky Irwin to deliver to Out-Half Peter Coman, who combined well with Aidan Dwyer, to send Eoghan O'Dwyer on his way, with work to do he finished superbly out wide for his second try of game for an unconverted try, 3-12.
This was far from the end of the first half action, as Thurles conceded a penalty for accidental offside from the restart. Killarney, looking to restore some pride before half time, held possession well to work their way up towards the Thurles try line. After putting together a number of phases, the Kerry men crossed the line sneaking in at the ankles of a Thurles defender for an unconverted try, 8-12.
Thurles started the second half with great intent and hunger, straight from the kick off, Larry O'Gorman rose highest to pluck the ball out of the air to set up a Thurles attack, which eventually led to the awarding of a penalty in favour of the away side. Captain Brian Lyons pointed to the post and Aidan Dwyer stepped up and slotted it between the uprights to extend the lead to 8-15
.
Thurles were well on top at this stage and confindence in the side clear to see, as Eoghan O'Dwyer, assisted by his wingers, John Coman and Adrian 'Aloe Vera' Bourke were tormenting the Killarney defence, making great yards whenever they had possession and putting pressure on the receivers from kick chases.
Jack O'Mahony, Dave Kelly and Emmet Kavanagh continued to make some great carries, as well as providing clean ball for scrum half Irwin at ruck time, who was also having an excellent game, delivering a string of impressive passes.
Thurles kept the score board ticking over, some great team play complimented by some super movement from the back line out wide, sent Eoghan racing in for a well deserved hat trick for an unconverted try to bring the score to 8-20. Thurles, now on the hunt for the winning bonus point, went straight back up the field, earned a lineout in the corner and the forwards, excellently drove their way towards the line, with Captain Brian Lyons touching down, 8-20.
Thurles now with bonus point secured, ran riot for the remaining quarter of the game. Dwayne Stanley, Charles Langley and Phil Kelly added freshness to the pack and picked up where the men they replaced had left off.
Thurles added 3 more tries, Eoghan got his 4th of the day, showing the form that earned him a place on the Munster Junior side last season, Peter Coman was sent over for a well deserved try by Irwin who managed to get away a great pass after being put under serious pressure from a Killarney defender and fitting that it was Joey Kelly who rounded off proceedings with the final try. Joey, a back row forward by trade, took up the challenge of filling a gap at 13, a challenge he passed with flying colours, making runs at various stages throughout like a natural centre, all 3 tries were converted by Aidan Dwyer as the game ended 8-41 to the Thurles men.
Thurles First XV next game is at home in the League to fellow Tipperary side Newport, kick off is at 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon. All support would be very welcome for this important home clash.
Both the players and management would like to thank all those who made the effort to travel to Killarney on Sunday, it was great to see an away venue that far from home, full of Thurles RFC supporters.
Thurles Scorers: Aidan Dwyer (4 Cons, 1 Pen), Eoghan O'Dwyer (4 Tries), Brian Lyons, Peter Coman and Joey Kelly (1 Try Each).
Thurles Squad vs. Killarney: 1. Jason O'Mahony 2. Dave Kelly 3. Ger McCormack 4. Larry O'Gorman 5. Brian Lyons (c) 6. Phil Kelly7. Donna Duggan 8. Emmet Kavanagh 9. Nicky Irwin 10. Peter Coman 11. Thurles Women's Rugby: Thurles 24 – 0 Cashel
Thurles Women's RFC secured their third consecutive league win in a close battle away against Cashel on Sunday. Thurles were keen to keep their winning streak going and the nerves could be seen in the opening minutes of the game. Some brilliant defensive work from both sides meant that it was well into the first half before either side managed to secure a try.
The opening try came as the result of a penalty for Thurles. The try was scored by Ciara Quinn who received a beautiful, well- timed offload from Joanne Harrison. Megan Callanan duly converted the conversion and the score stood 0-7 in favour of Thurles.
Both sides stepped up the intensity in the second half of the game. Yet another penalty gave Thurles vital possession which resulted in a magnificent try for Ciara O'Dwyer. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful by the narrowest of margins. Thurles led 12- 0.
Moments later Thurles were down defending as Cashel drove towards the try line but some wonderful team defensive work and a skillful clearance from the boot of Ciara Quinn meant that Cashel were denied points on the board. The Thurles defence held tough on numerous occasions throughout the match and it is a real testament to the character of the team who are equally as confident in defence as they are in attack. In fact to date in the League they have only conceded one try.
Thurles' third try was scored by Aisling Byrne and came from a wonderful passage of play which saw excellent work and skill from Elaine Molumby. The conversion from a very tight angle was missed but Thurles were well and truly in control of the game. Cashel were not prepared to lose without a fight and once again went on the attack. Thurles once again held firm on defence. Claire Mockler, who had a wonderful attacking and defensive game, managed to turn over possession at the crucial moment.
With only minutes remaining on the clock Thurles had their eyes firmly set on a fourth try and the bonus point. Once again it was Aisling Byrne that scored the crucial try just to the right of the posts giving Megan Callanan an easier job of slotting over the conversion.
The game ended 24 – 0. Thurles women put in a stellar performance which saw wonderful team work and defensive skill. With one game remaining before the Christmas break, away to Bandon, Thurles will be looking to build on the performance to try secure another victory.
U-18 Boys: Dungarvan 34 – 10 Thurles
Thurles u18s travelled to Dungarvan last Sunday for the quarter final of the East Munster League. This was a very tough game with Dungarvan scoring 2 tries in the first 5 minutes. Thurles responded with some great rugby and scored 2 tries of their own. These tries came from Seamus Telford and Shane Nugent which left Thurles trailing by 5 points at half time.
Unfortunately in the second half Thurles had to make a lot of tackles and it told before the end with Dungarvan scoring 3 more tries. Man of the match performance for Thurles was from winger Dan Taylor.
U-18 Girls: Thurles v Carrick on Suir.
And so it began. Having performed admirably in the sevens league, our under 18 girls team were out for their first 15 a side match of the season last Friday. The team has gone through major changes, and Thurles had five girls that had never played a game before, and had another couple only making their second appearance.
Against that, the trip to Carrick on Suir to play the reigning Munster champions who had nine players on the Munster U18 team was daunting to say the least.
The game was played as 13-a-side. The girls took to the field in great spirit and really put it up to the Carrick girls. Tackles were made and no quarter was given. To pick a player of the match would be impossible, because every girl contributed and gave their all. Under the captaincy of Catriona Molumby, and with their own experienced players of Aisling O'Hagan, Aisling Scanlon and Gemma Dunican, Thurles rose to the challenge well and performed with great courage.
Kerry Fitzgerald and Bhrianne Beatty excelled in the front row, and had Carrick under pressure from the start. In the end, Carrick proved too strong, but a special word of congratulations has to go to the new girls who played outstanding rugby.
For such a young and inexperienced squad, Thurles can now go on to play the rest of the league with optimism. Well done to all the girls, you did your coaches, your club and yourselves proud.
The new girls who all had an outstanding game were Holly O'Dwyer, Lara Unger, Jane Ryan, Aibhe Connelly, Melanie O'Halloran, Mary O'Connor and Leah Scott, and to hear them after the match, you would think they won.
It only goes to prove that it is never too late to start playing the game. So come along to training and give it a try. Training continues every Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 in the rugby club. The girls have no game planned for next weekend, and face Listowel at home the following week in the league
U-16 Boys: Dungarvan 14 – 17 Thurles
Thurles travelled to Dungarvan last sunday to play the Waterford side in the u 16s East munster quarter finals. It was a day for running rugby and this was Dungarvan's game plan from the start. Dungarvan were first to score. Scoring a converted try under the posts.
Thurles forwards started to keep it tight taking Dungarvan on close to the ruck's which paid dividends with Eoin Kerrane scoring an unconverted try. Dungarvan struck back nearly straight away through their backs scoring again under the posts which they converted to finish the half 14 – 5 up.
Thurles improved in the second half pinning Dungarvan back in their own half for much of the half and this pressure was finally rewarded when Ed O Gorman scored a try out on the wing. For the next 10 mins Thurles threw the kitchen sink at Dungarvan but to no avail. With 3 mins to go Dungarvan were awarded a penalty to clear their 22.From the resulting line out Dungarvan spread the ball wide when Nick Cooney completed a Tommy Bowe like interception and ran half the length of the field to score a try ,which was converted. The game finished with a final scoreline of Thurles 17 Dungarvan 14.
Thurles are out next week in the Semi Final Thurles RFC club notes from last weekend to Waterpark. Thurles RFC wish the boys the best of luck.

Cobh scored a consolation try late in the game. Waterpark can be well pleased with this victory with both Gerry Harney and David Pierce making a big impact from the bench. Waterpark entertained Tramore and Waterford in an East Munster blitz last Sunday morning with over 300 kids involved. There was a lot of skill on shows and it looks like the future of rugby in the area is in good hands both on and off the pitch.
