Waterford City RFC News

Waterford City 14 – 5 Skibbereen
Skibbereen are currently sitting in 6th place in division one and would have travelled to Waterford with most expecting a comfortable win for the away side in the first round of the Munster Junior Cup. City however didn’t read the script and caused an upset with a very good performance and great win. There was very little between the teams in the first half with good defence and tough tackling the main feature. Kevin Whelan, Nicky Jacob and Cian Foskin putting their bodies on the line time and again to ensure the opposition could create very little.

It was from City possession that Skibbereen charged down a clearance kick and pounced for the opening try. The score gave the Cork side a 5-0 lead at the half but City knew what they needed to do and started the second half strongly. City were on top at scrum time and the lineout was very strong, Alex Fitzmaurice injected some real life into the attack with some strong carries busting over the gain line. The back line moved the ball wide well on several occasions and created a couple of excellent chances, City would have had two tries only for the final pass not to go to hand.

Despite missing some good chances, City were the fitter side and as the game went on they always looked like the more team more likely to score next. In the last 10 minutes the home team put serious pressure on the Skibbereen defence with Jason Power, Karl Reade and Simon O’Hara making powerful runs, it was on one of O’Hara’s carries that the defence finally breached for a well-deserved try and Michael Hayes converted to put City 7-5 ahead. City then added a second try following some good play from the backline, Ryan Philips got the ball in space and beat two defenders to touch down under the posts. It was a good team performance but Dave O’Connor was man of the match having won key turnovers, some good carries and tireless rucking.

U-16 Munster League: Waterford City 12 – 0 Killorglin
Both sides played some excellent running rugby but City were too strong for Killorglin on the day. Cian Lally scored two excellent tries, the backs got him the ball in space and he showed great ability to beat defenders and pace to finish both. Lorcan Lynch kicked well and added a conversion. There were great performances from Paudric Gannon, Cillian Power and Matthew Garvey. Bruff up next for the U16s.

Senior Munster Junior 2 South League: Waterford City 0 – 41 Mitchelstown
City played at home under lights on Friday night, they will be disappointed with their performance but were beaten by the better side. Mitchelstown were a strong side and clinical when they created chances. The score was 13-0 at the break but ran in several scores towards the end of the game to rack up a impressive score line.

Kilfeacle RFC News

On Sunday last, Kilfeacle RFC welcomed Thurles RFC to Morrissey Park in the first round of the prestigious Junior Cup. The weather conditions on the day were perfect for whatever brand of rugby either side wanted to play. Historical scorelines between these two teams suggested that there would be very little separating them after 80 minutes and it was building up to be a cracker.

Thurles, determined to get off to a good start, threatened the Kilfeacle line repeatedly and earned a penalty after 10 minutes, which Aidan O’Dwyer converted to give the away side an early lead. Kilfeacle, inspired by the task that lay ahead of them, upped their game and gradually played their way back into the game. Darren Lowry converted a penalty, which came from Thurles going offside at the breakdown, which levelled the sides. Kilfeacle sustained this pressure and after 27 minutes, Shane Morrissey touched down in the corner after Alan O’ Mahony’s clean break in the mid-field. Lowry converted the difficult conversion, leaving the score 10-3 to Kilfeacle. O’ Dwyer did score a penalty late in the half for the away side, but a very good breakaway try just before the break, scored by Cormac O’Donoghue and converted by Lowry, would prove a very influential score in a closely fought first half. Halftime scoreline 17-6.

Whatever messages were passed down to both sides at half time, clearly altered the tempo for the remainder of the game, as both sides came out fired up and the game itself opened up to the delight of the large crowd in attendance. Thurles got off to a great start and scored a try under the posts from a series of pick and go’s. This brought them into contention immediately, with only 4 points separating the sides. The next 30 minutes of play, highlighted the work being done in training from Kilfeacle, utilising an off-loading game, aided by good support running and also helped by impressive cleaning out at ruck time. Both sides traded push-over tries, before Kilfeacle scored 4 unanswered tries in the final 20 minute period. These were scored by Dave Kiersey, JJ Cooney, Keith Bourke and Stephen Flood. This left the final scoreline 46-20.

Others that excelled on the day were Ger Luby, Diarmuid O’Donnell and Simon Barry. We would like to wish a seedy recovery to Cormac and Pat who sustained ankle injuries during the game. It is also imperative that to keep up the good run of form, that we keep up the numbers at training and as always, support at the games is encouraged and appreciated.

Newcastle West RFC News

Munster Junior league Division 1 – Newcastle West 39 (22) Nenagh 21 (14)
I said in my notes from the last match that the true sign of good team is how you react to your bad days as well as your good. The reaction was one that was extremely positive and what happened on the hill was put firmly to bed by an excellent all round squad performance. With three trys scored in twenty eight minutes from a back line who were on fire while receiving high quality ball coming from the hard graft of their pack.

The home side definitely arrived well up for this game and were to get on the scoreboard with Sean Neville scoring from a move beginning in there own half started by a strong scrum.It was the change of direction by James Kelly who opened up the line for Sean to go over which Sean Herlihy converted.The home side were not having it there own way and it would be twenty minutes later before Sean Herlihy carved open the nenagh back line with a flash of individual brilliance saw him go over under the posts for a try which he converted himself. Stephen Kelly scored the first of a hat-trick of trys in the twenty eight minute .This was a well worked try with the ball moved rapidly to the wing but Stephen had a lot of work to do to evade the rushing defence ,he ran the touch line for thirty metres before crossing and touching down under the posts which Sean Herlihy converted.Sean converted a penalty on on thirty two minutes but we allowed Nenagh score two converted trys before halftime to make the score 22-14 at the break.

The try of the game came in the forty seventh minute when the forwards laid the foundation for a set piece move involving the hands of Sean Herlihy,Conor Whelan,John B Sheehan,Sean Neville,Tommy Kelleher getting it to Stephen who ran thirty fice yard scoring again under the post,Sean converted.
Stephen Kelly and Sean Herlihy were to cross the whitewash again before the end of the game and Nenagh got a converted try.
Although all the scores came from the back line,there were some very solid performances up front veteran Richard Langford is like a good red wine (gets better with age)Ronan Mulcahy playing in his preferred role was tackling all above grass.Shane Magner does not do back pedalling and Sean Corbett was in excellent form as well.

Kilfeacle RFC 46 – 20 Thurles RFC
The Thurles First XV made the short trip to Kilfeacle on Sunday last in the prestigious Munster Junior Cup. Thurles were always considered underdogs going into this fixture from when the draw was made before Christmas, but Thurles would have been quietly confident in the build-up of causing an upset, despite Kilfeacle flying high in 4th Place in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League.

It was indeed Thurles, who started brightest, with an early maul bringing them inside the Kilfeacle 22 after a great drive up field from the forwards. The front row of McCormack, Dunne & Skehan were an able match for their counterparts at scrum time, a battle which was greatly contested by both sides throughout. Eoghan O’Dwyer, Joey Kelly and Adrian Bourke had made some good yards in attack early on before Aidan Dwyer made a great break through the centre to bring play inside the home side’s 22 once more, where he popped to the oncoming Paddy Phelan in support, after a few phases Thurles were awarded a penalty for a Kilfeacle player coming in at the side of the ruck, Aidan Dwyer slotted it over to make it 0-3.

Thurles received the ball back from the restart and attempted to work their way up the field again. Kilfeacle eventually started to get their hands on the ball and were building momentum towards the Thurles 22. After some great defence from Dunne, Lyons and Geoghan, the home team decided to take their penalty which had been awarded for offside to level matters at 3-3.

It wasn’t long before Kilfeacle were moving the figures on the scoreboard again, straight from the kick-off, the men in blue found big holes in the Thurles defence from the kick chase and they filtered through the gaps with ease to add a converted try to their tally, 10-3. A similar story ensued minutes later, when Kilfeacle opened Thurles up down the right hand side of the field following a string of poor tackles, to touch down in the corner for an unconverted try, 15-3.

Thurles got themselves together once more, with Kinane, O’Dwyer and Conor Cooney, who had replaced the injured Paddy Phelan, involved in some great play to get the away side back into scoring contention. Nicky Irwin, who gave a man of the match performance on the day was delivering some great ball to put Thurles on the front foot in attack. After a number of phases near the Kilfeacle line, Thurles thought they had made the breakthrough when Eoghan O’Dwyer made his way over the line but for a Kilfeacle player to make an unbelievable last ditch challenge to knock the ball out of hands at the vital moment.

From the resulting 22 drop out, Peter Coman & Ollie Geoghan combined well to bring play up the field once more, Skehan, Kelly and Irwin all had a go at the line before Thurles decided to take their points from a penalty, as Dwyer stepped up again to slot over. This wasn’t the end of the scoring for the half as Kilfeacle managed to work their way down the field for one of their more deserving scores of the day to push the score out to 22-6 at the half time break.

As was the case in the first half, Thurles started brightest, with Irwin and O’Dwyer asking serious question of the Kilfeacle defence early on. Thurles controlled the opening 30 minutes of the second half, as Colin Feeley scored his first tries in Thurles colours and shortly after Colm Skehan added another, both converted by Aidan Dwyer to bring the scores back to 22-20.

Just as Thurles were building and seemingly heading towards the winning score, a Kilfeacle player got a block down on a Thurles box kick and ran in under the posts, disaster struck shortly after when a Thurles players threw an intercept pass to gift wrap another try to the homeside. Kilfeacle added a couple of more tries before the final whistle which was not a true reflection of what was a very competitive game until the final few minutes.

Thurles’ next outing is against Crosshaven at home this Sunday at 2.30pm, Thurles will be looking for another League win to keep up with those ahead with just a few more games left in the season, all points will be vital. Continued support is greatly appreciated by the players and management.

Thurles U16 Rugby (Boys)
Thurles U16s travelled to the heart of Cork to take on a Clonakilty side who are unbeaten this year. Thurles and Clonakilty spent the first quarter testing the others defences and it was a slipped tackle that led to the first try for Clon. When the no. 8 scored in the corner.

Thurles upped the pressure and were awarded a penalty in the Clon. half and from the line out Thurles put a few phases together but knocked on with the line at their mercy. The ref blew his whistle for half time.
Thurles attacked from the kick off. But it was Clon who were next to score when after a Master class in off loading Clon scored a try in the corner. Thurles were 10 points down. But this side never gives up. The Clon tried to clear their lines and a miss kick by the outhalf sent the ball straight up and the Clon. Pack who had not retreated 10 meters from the kick were off side. The ref blew his whistle and the Thurles scrum half took the penalty quickly and scored a try but the ref called it back for a scrum for a nock on by Clon. Thurles kept their discipline and were eventually awarded a try after the second center for Thurles scored under the posts. Which was converted.

Clonakilty attacked the Thurles try line but some stout defence by Thurles kept the score at 10 – 7. Thurles worked their way back down the field but ran out of time. Clonakilty 10 Thurles 7

Waterpark RFC News

Munster Junior Cup: Waterpark 23- Muskerry 14
Waterpark had to work hard for this win over Muskerry in the first round of the Junior Cup in Ballinakill last Sunday.

Muskerry took an early lead with a converted try but Waterpark hit back with a try from prop Adam Walsh which outhalf John Lillis converted from the touch line. Both sides were evenly matched in the first half with the score line at halftime reading 7 points a piece.

The home side began the second half brightly with No8 Scott Hornibrook opening the scoring with a try again Lillis added the extras. Muskerry scored their second try of the game to tie the score at 14 all.

In the final ten minutes of the game John Lillis landed 3 more penalties to secure Waterparks place in the next round of the cup where the will face Highfield. A feature of this game was a number of the under 20’s playing at this level for the first time, Simon Molloy and Alex Pimm both did well. While at the other end of the scale Mark Harper and Barry Hillard returned to Waterpark colours for the first time this season.

Next Sunday Waterpark face Muskerry again this time in the Munster Junior League with a 2.30pm kick off.

Pan Munster Under 18s
Bantry Bay 14 -Waterpark 14
This squad made the long trip to West Cork on Sunday morning for a 1pm kicked in Bantry on what was a very heavy pitch. Waterpark played down the hill in the first half and took the lead with a well worked try from Captain Tom Swift, Molloy landed the conversion. Waterpark repelled a number of attacks from the home side with great work in the defence from second row Jack Walsh and full back Eoin McGrath.

Centre James Kiersey scored an excellent team try when he touched down under the posts following a number of well worked phases from the visitors. In the second half Bantry used the hill to a great effect and kept Waterpark pinned in the own 22. After a number of pick and drives the home side crossed for their opening score of the game.

Their second score followed when Waterpark lost possession in the midfield and the home sides prop was on hand to take the final pass to cross for the score to tie the game.

Under 16 Friendly
Waterpark 31- Wexford 10
Waterpark had a good win over Wexford in Ballinakill last Saturday. The tries came from hooker Sam Hogan (2), No 8 Alex Deegan (2) and second row Harry Donnelly.
Eugene Smyth kicked 3 conversions.

Under 15 Friendly
Waterpark 57- Enniscorthy Nil.
A very good performance from this improving side. Jack Pierce crossed for 4 tries, while Ben Daly, B Cummins, C Glynn and O Daly also scored tries. Outhlaf Daly kicked 6 conversions.

Under 14 Cup
Waterpark 22 Cashel 10
Waterpark maintained their unbeaten run in the Cup with this victory over Cashel on Sunday. The home side’s tries came from Robert Moore, Billy Doherty and 2 from No 8 Mark O’Hare. Outhalf Paddy Leavy kicked one conversion. Thanks to Ely Cullen and Billy Doherty who stepped up from the under 13’s for this match and acquitted themselves very well. Also good too have Geoff Power back on the pitch after a long layoff.

Shannon Supporters Bus to Belfast
Shannon RFC are planning to run a supporters bus on Friday February 20th for the Belfast Harlequins V Shannon AIL game. The bus will be leaving early on Friday morning, overnight stay in Belfast on Friday night and then the bus will be dropping supporters to the AIL match on Saturday. The bus will then depart back for Limerick on Saturday evening. It will be a great trip with the chance to show the players some extra support on match day.

D KUBE
Shannon RFC is running a fundraising event on March 12th in the Strand Hotel and the club needs your support.

The event is based around the TV gameshow, The Cube, where contestants complete challenges within a 4m × 4m × 4m perspex cube. Participants are given straightforward tasks, which become quite challenging when confined in the cube and put under pressure in front of an audience of 600 people.

Each organisation will have a team of 5 to start with one of those five guaranteed to make it into one of the quarter final spots on behalf of their team and organisation.
The winning team will win €;2,000, as well as additional €;1,000 that they can donate to the charity of their choice.

We have organised a package, which includes a team of 5 and 75 tickets for your organisation. The package also includes finger food and a voucher for a drink at the bar. The total cost of the package is €;2,500, which we believe represents great value for a fun based company night out. Your team also has the chance to win €;3,000, with at least €;1,000 going to the charity of your choice.

While taking a full package may not suit your individual requirements, we also have the option where a company or individual could take 2 or 3 positions in a team. For €;1,500, your company could have 3 team members and 45 tickets to attend, which would include food and a drink for all of those attending. Your three team members would still have the chance to win €;3,000, with at least €;1,000 going to the charity of your choice.

In order to create some internal interest, fun and participation, we’re suggesting that companies could offer these places as a bonus or by running an internal company based promotion.

A Message from the Branch
"Throughout the province there have been increasing reports of verbal abuse and threatening behavior at all levels of the game.

The abuse is verbal and predominately directed at referees. There have been increasing reports of instances of verbal abuse of players by opposition coaches and spectators. Some instances have been very threatening and unsavory.

This form of behavior is not warranted in our game and has no place. We must remember that adult behavior is mimicked by the children and young men who play our game. We the coaches, managers, spectators and mentors must provide a positive role model for the players of all ages.

All clubs are responsible for the conduct of their coaches, players and spectators.
You are requested to make it clear to your coaches, players, spectators and club mentors that the verbal abuse of referees, opposition players, coaches and spectators is not acceptable.
Your help and co-operation is requested to reduce and stop such unwarranted behaviour"
