Seven Wins From Seven in Munster Junior League: Newcastle West 13 – 7 Cobh Pirates
An error ridden performance but a win is how last Sunday's game in Cullinagh panned out. All roads will lead to Clonmel on January 4th as both teams will go into this top of the table clash with thirty two points each and locked together.

Cobh were first to score after five minutes with a converted try.The home side were been given plenty by a will disciplined Cobh pack who contested the line out and won a number of our throw ins,the home side seemed to lack that usual killer instinct and seemed to be going through the paces in the first half. Some unusual decisions by the referee was not helping their composure.

It was to be on the stroke of half-time when our Captin Sean Herlihy dive over for a try after great work from the pack allowed him a gap and over he went, the conversion was missed and the half time score was 5-7

The second half was a tense affair with error after error being made ,The pack were now dominating the scrum and the referee was giving the penalties that were richly deserved. In the seventieth minute the home side were awarded a penalty and Sean converted from the halfway line to leave one point between the teams .The final nail in Cobhs coffin came when the home side were awarded a penalty five yards out but opted for a scrum which the forwards drove towards the line, Sean Herlihy was fed by John Sheehan and again Sean got over the line for a great try. The conversion was missed but we held out for another great league win.

As said above all roads will lead to Clonmel, but before that we have the Transfield Cup final on 21 December. The team have a well earned break next weekend and im sure all know what is required to achieve the next step.

Man of the match goes to Sean Herlihy closely followed by Dave Foley and TJ Relihan.

Senior Munster Junior Division 2: Waterford City 16 – 18 Presentation
Despite some controversial touch judge decisions in the last 5 minutes. City know they have only themselves to blame for losing their first league match in the last 4 outings. The home team started brightly and took the lead through a Michael Hayes penalty after 5 minutes. City then dealt poorly with the resulting kick off from Presentation and the away team capitalised on the good field position gained with a try, the City defence was slow to react and was punished to leave the team trailing 5-3.

City responded straight away forcing another penalty and converted it to lead 6-3 but again made another mistake from the resulting kick off; the away side put the penalty down the line and scored from the lineout to lead 12-6 with the conversion added. In the opening 10 minutes of the 2nd half, the two teams traded penalties to leave City still 6 points behind at 15-9.

Approaching the final quarter of the game, City were only a score behind despite a number of errors, some poor discipline and not playing to the standard they have come to expect. The team began to play some good rugby and really stretched the presentation defence by keeping the ball and moving the opposition about. Following a number of phases with some good play from backs and forwards, City got the try they deserved when Connor Power spotted a weak shoulder and powered over under the posts. Michael Hayes converted for the Waterford side to lead 16-15.

With 10 minutes to go, City were in good shape but gave away a penalty and presentation converted to put the Limerick side back in front. City then threw everything at the Presentation defence, keeping possession and playing with a good tempo. City won a penalty with 5 minutes to go but missed the chance to snatch back the lead, in the final minutes of the game the home team looked to be in for scores on two occasions only to see the Presentation touch judge's flag go up for what were contentious decisions. Despite a disappointing result there were strong performances from Ben Duggan, Connor Power, Stephen Walsh and Eamonn O'Keeffe.

Munster Junior League Division 1
Clonmel and Newcastle West have set themselves up for a top of the table clash to kick off the New Year when the teams go head to head in Clonmel on January 4th next. Both teams secured away wins last Sunday, but it was Clonmel that picked up the bonus point to level the sides on 32 points after 7 unbeaten rounds in this year's Munster Junior League Division 1.

The two sides are the only two teams in the fourteen team league to be unbeaten at the half way mark. It makes for a tantalising encounter in January.

Clonmel travelled to Waterpark for their game and came away 25-34 victors in what was at times a scrappy affair. Clonmel's John Gallagher opened proceedings with Clonmel's first try within five minutes after a big drive from the pack. Conor Cooney, who was on form the whole day converted. Three penalties for Waterpark reversed the laed to 9-7 on the thirty third minute mark before a converted Dylan Cadogan try for Clonmel restored the lead to the visitors. A further Waterpark penalty sent the teams into half time with Clonmel holding a fragile 12-14 lead.

""The second half got off to a strong start from a Clonmel perspective with a great run and well taken try by Greg Carroll which was again duly converted by Cooney. Two more penalties and an eventual penalty try against us, countered by a Luke Hogan (above) try under the posts and a further penalty by Cooney saw Clonmel close out the game 25-34 winners. A bonus point win secured but lots to take away from the game to work on.

With a break in the league until the New Year, attention once again turns to cup action with Clonmel hosting Kilfeacle in the Munster Clubs Challenge Cup on Saturday evening, December 20th at 7pm. There is no 1st XV fixture this weekend. (December 13/14)

Junior 2 League
It was a windy but dry day in Cashel last Sunday as the Clonmel 2nd XV prepared themselves for what was sure to be another tough, physical game with our local rivals. Clonmel was the side to apply all the pressure in the opening ten minutes of the game as Colm O'Connell kicked two consecutive penalties giving a 0-6 lead to the visitors.

However, a strong Cashel side were quick to respond with a well worked try in the far corner. It was 5-6 approaching half time when space presented itself for Clonmel's Shay van Dam, rounding his man and showing great pace to score Clonmel's opening try.

The second half brought with it more strong winds and cold conditions which were responsible for plenty of mistakes on both sides. It was Cashel who were first to strike, taking advantage of a Clonmel side who were slow to react to a great individual break from Cashel's Eoin Laffan going over to make the score 10-11. His try was then converted to put Cashel in the lead at 12-11.

Things worsened for Clonmel who were unable to recover the ball which landed in a dangerous position after a great Cashel kick from deep. A converted Cashel try made the score 19-11. Clonmel managed to claw their way back with a try from substitute Aldo Matassa who broke through the Cashel defence to score under the posts.

In the dying seconds of the game, Clonmel found themselves deep in the Cashel half after Christopher Browne found space in front of him as a result of a great set play straight from the training ground. It was Aldo Matassa, with a beautiful cross field kick, which picked out Shay van Dam who touched down for his second of the evening. The final score a well recovered 19-23 win for Clonmel.

U-18s East Munster League
A disappointing result but a very spirited performance sums up last Sunday's East Munster U-18s game away to Waterpark in the league semi-final. Windy conditions were again the order of the day and the consequential impact on our lineout throwing took its toll. We were down two converted tries within the opening fifteen minutes but bravely dug-in to withstand huge pressure in the second quarter.""

When we rallied, tries from Jordan Cronin, Gavin Rea and Luke Noonan and three conversions from Gavin Whelan were sublime and showed the drive and determination that has characterised this team all season.

The Clonmel U-18s in action at the weekend

On the day it wasn't sufficient as four tries from Waterpark and a 35 points in total meant the semi-final honours stayed with the home side. Our lads can now take stock, build on the huge positives and look forward to games in pan-Munster competition to keep the fire and enthusiasm alive.

Canon Hayes Sports Awards
After its fantastic season, culminating in the award of Munster Rugby Junior Club of the Year and winning the Munster Junior Cup, the club is delighted to be nominated for the county award in this year's Canon Hayes Sports Awards. We are equally thrilled for our former player, and hero of this year's women's world cup, Niamh Briggs, to be nominated for the national award. The winners will be announced on Friday night at a black-tie gala ball in Ballykisteen Hotel. Good luck to all nominees especially us!

Club Lotto
Our annual club lotto will start again in January and we would appeal to all our current subscribers to renew their subscriptions for the New Year.

Scheduled Fixtures:
No games this weekend.

Fixture Updates will be posted on the club's website, Facebook page and on Twitter @ClonmelRFC.

UBL Div 2b: Bruff Vrs Wanderers
Ninth placed Wanderers were the visitors to Kilballyowen on Saturday for round 7 of the UBL. Only 3 points separated the teams going into the game with Bruff lying in 6th place.

Things didn't start well for Bruff and we were down by a try from winger Kelvin Leahy after 6 mins. Wanderers dominated possession and territory from the restart and the pressure told as Bruff picked up 2 yellow cards during the first half. Wanderers took full advantage and scored 2 more trys before the H/T whistle from Eoin O Donnell and Robert Clune which they converted to make the score 0-19 at the break.

With Wanderers now in the hunt for a try bonus Bruff had to regroup and refocus at half time.

Bruff came out fighting from the restart and got on the score board after 54 mins with a penalty from Declan Bannon. Bruff attacked in wave after wave but found it hard to break down the Wanderers defence. It wasn't until the final play of the game that Bruff scored again, a try in the corner for winger Paidi Kilcoyne which was converted by Bannon. The game finished on a scoreline of 10-19 to the visitors.

""

Bruff had the better of the second half in terms of field position and possession and had it not been for a few uncharacteristic knock-on's and dropped balls Bruff could have got more from the game.

Up until Saturday Bruff have had consistency in team selection but selection was badly hampered going into the game due to a number of injury's and work commitments.

The new guys that came in gave good accounts of themselves and can feel confident going into next weekend's game away to Sligo.

U-20s Donal Walsh Trophy/NML
As expected Bruff & Garryowen U-20s dished up an exciting game in the U-20s Conference which doubled as a North Munster league fixture, played on Wednesday evening in Dooradoyle.

Bruff were slow to get into the game and trailed 6-0 early in the first half. Bruff made it 8-6 by half time with a try from Brian Fanning and a Penalty from Paul Downes.

Downes added another penalty shortly after h/t before Darragh Fanning added a second 5 pointer for Bruff. The try was converted and Bruff went into an 18-6 lead. Garryowen fought back with a converted try of their own but Bruff had enough left in the tank to see the game out, winning on a score line of 18-13.

Underage Results
The U18's game due to be played on Friday night had to be postponed at short notice, apologies to anyone who turned up to watch the game, we'll try and get updates on the website in future for games that are cancelled for whatever reason.

U16's
A try saving hand trip by winger Jason Fitzgibbon on the Young Munster full back in the last play saw the U16s keep their 100% record at Kilballyowen in a thriller on Sunday. Munsters dominated the opening stages but Bruff defended well. In their first attack the forwards went through the phases and the ball was moved wide for winger Sean McCarthy to score in the corner. Munsters scored a penalty and missed 2 more in a super first half to leave it 5 3 to Bruff at the break.

Early in the second Bruff extended their lead with a great try following great interplay between John Bateman and Michael O Grady for Bateman to touch down. Munsters got in for a good try with 10 mins remaining and it was end to end until Fitzgibbons try saving tackle. It finished 10 8 to Bruff. Next Sunday the u16's are away to Abbeyfeale

Thurles Secure Full Points in Tipperary Derby: Thurles RFC 31 – 10 Newport RFC
Thurles continued their challenge at the top of League last Sunday with second bonus point win in as many weeks, this time taking the scalp of Tipperary neighbours Newport in what was, despite the scoreline, a hard fought victory.""

On a perfect day for rugby at Loughtagalla, Thurles started the more promising, asking questions of the Newport defence early on, with Emmet Kavanagh and Eoghan O'Dwyer carrying well in attack.

The front row of Jack O'Mahony, Dave Kelly and Ger McCormack were putting serious pressure on their opponents at scrum time. Brian Lyons gets his pass away under pressure

The Thurles pressure was rewarded when they were awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck by a Newport player, the resulting kick at goal was missed but Thurles regained possession from the 22 dropout, from which they set up attack again. The half back combination of Nicky Irwin and Peter Coman conducted some great play between the backs and forwards, with play eventually reaching John Coman out wide who finished excellently for the first try of the game, Aidan Dwyer added the extras for a 7-0 scoreline.

The home side were rolling now and within minutes, the other Thurles winger, Adrian Bourke touched down, for what was another excellently worked try, to tighten their grip on the game, the try went unconverted for 12-0.
Newport showed more intent from the restart, putting phases together but were continually knocked back by some great defence from the likes of Brian Lyons, Donnacha Duggan and Nicky Irwin. Newport managed to keep possession and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which their centre slotted over for 12-3.

Thurles went onto control the remainder of the half, some great work from Dave Kelly and Adrian Bourke saw the home side work their way up the field,

The men in black and white continued with the pressure on the Newport line, with centres Shane Moloney and Aidan Dwyer making good yards in different passages of play. Thurles were on the verge of a breakthrough on the Newport line before a head on collision with Ger McCormack and a Newport player, forced a knock on to allow the away side clear their lines after a short break in play.

Thurles secured the ball inside their own half and from the resulting clearing kick, a wall of Thurles players asked serious questions of the Newport winger and full back, who didn't have the answers as Peter Coman claimed the ball to race in under the posts from the half way line to secure the bonus point just before half time, the conversion was added by Dwyer to end the half on a 26-3 scoreline.

The second half proved a dire and frustrating game both for the players and spectators, with a conveyor belt of penalties killing the game as a spectacle. Thurles had a few scoring chances early on in the second half but broke down for one reason or another.

Newport rarely got passed the gain line as the speed and execution of the Thurles defence nullified the threat from the source. Newport did register a try on the scoreboard albeit a penalty try, awarded despite it seeming that the home front row were on top throughout. This penalty try brought the score to 26-10 with just over 5 minutes remaining.

From the kick off, Thurles kicked deep and the pressure from the chase resulted in a line out just inside the Newport 22. It was clear that the forwards had a score to settle and that the backs weren't going to get a look in here. Charles Langley and Brian Lyons conducted proceedings from the back of the maul before the ball found its way to Joey Kelly who touched down in the corner for his second try of the game for an unconverted try as the game ended 31-10 in favour of Thurles.

This was never going to be an easy game for the Thurles men, as Newport always seem to find form for these Tipperary derbies, it's one that Thurles will be very pleased to have got maximum points out of as they close the gap on those in the 2 positions above them.

The Thurles First XV next outing is next weekend away to Bandon in the Semi Final of the Munster Junior Challenge Shield on Saturday night with a 7.30pm kick off. As Thurles seek to book their place in the this Munster Final, we would ask anyone who can to make the effort to travel to Bandon to shout on the lads, as they face a Bandon side who are unbeaten this year.

The players and management would like to thank all those who were at Loughtagalla on Sunday for our last home game of 2014, we hope the large crowds continue in the New Year as it provides a great boost to players, especially in tighter games.

Thurles Scorers: Joey Kelly (2 Tries), John Coman, Adrian Bourke, Peter Coman (1 Try Each), Aidan Dwyer (3 Cons).
Thurles Squad vs. Newport: 1. Jason O'Mahony 2. Dave Kelly 3. Ger McCormack 4. Larry O'Gorman 5. Brian Lyons (c) 6. Joey Kellyp7. Donna Duggan 8. Emmet Kavanagh 9. Nicky Irwin 10. Peter Coman 11. John Coman 12. Aidan Dwyer 13. Shane Moloney 14. Adrian Bourke 15. Eoin O'Dwyer 16. Dwayne Stanley 17. Charlie Langley 18. Phil Kelly 19. Conor Cooney 20. Ollie Delaney, James Ryan, Tommy Connelly, Eoin Long and Colm Skehan.

Thurles U16 Boys
Thurles u16s had a long drive and an early start in Waterford on sunday. Thurles found themselves 7 down after a great start by Waterpark. This kicked the Thurles boys into life. Thurles worked their way into the Waterpark 22 when at the break down they were awarded a penalty and a quick tap by the scrum half Seamus Holohan out smarted the Waterpark defence to score a try on the wing. Thurles added a penalty kick to go 8 – 7 in front.
""

Thurles were awarded a scrum and the Thurles front row of Dylan Mason , Colin o Shaughnessy and James Leahy held the scrum and the ball was won and passed out the backs to Ed O Gorman with a lot to do scored a try on the wing. Thurles were 13 – 7 up. Thurles were not to score again and went in at half time down a point after Waterpark scored a try under the posts. Waterpark added two more tries in the second half. Credit to Thurles who finished the half in the Waterpark 22 after a strong carry by Michael Ryan (left) who was stopped just short of the line. The game finished Waterpark 28 Thurles 13. The consolation for Thurles is that they have qualified for the pan Munster competition that is due to start after Christmas. The coaches wish to thank all those that travelled on Sunday to support the team.

Anyone who wishes to place an ad or would like more information please contact Siofra on 0863018993 or email siofrascanlan@gmail.com

A Great Gift for All
Why not give someone near or far the gift of a Shannon RFC membership. A great gift for any occasion with the added bonus of supporting your local club. Packages, including family membership, are available. Should you wish to find out more information or purchase membership please contact Tom Hackett at honsec@shannonrfc.com

PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY THROUGH COONAGH
We would ask everyone to please take care, slow down and observe the speed limit through Coonagh Village on the way to and from the matches and training.

YOUR CLUB, YOUR THOUGHTS
We always like to hear from our members near and far. If you have a story, any interesting historical information or an article about the club that you would like to share we would love to hear it. Any submissions for consideration can be sent to siofrascanlan@gmail.com
