Munster Junior Division 2: Waterford City 40-16 Youghal
Waterford City picked up a well-deserved bonus point with a convincing win over Youghal in Kilbarry. City started at a tremendous pace that Youghal couldn't handle, the home team scored 3 tries in the first twenty minutes. Simon O'Hara got the first with a powerful drive over the line, Ryan Philips was next with clinical finishing when the back line worked the ball out wide to him in space, Ryan was left one on one with the last defender and easily outpaced him to score the second try. Michael Hayes then caught the Youghal defence out of position with a nice grubber through which he managed to collect to score in the corner.

At 19-0 with only 20 minutes on the clock, it seemed like the flood gates would open for City to run up a big score but to their credit Youghal dug in and put in some real fight. The Cork side scored a nice try under the posts and shortly after added a long range penalty to leave the score 19-10. It was game on again with Youghal having a bit of a purple patch towards half time. Each side managed 2 penalties before the break to leave the score 25-16 to City at the break.

After the break City re-established their dominance and added another penalty before going on to score a further two tries. Skipper David O'Connor who had an outstanding game picked up try on the back of an impressive maul from the pack. Kevin Whelan then added his name to the score sheet after another battering series of attacks from the City forwards, the pack were getting over the gain line all day and Kevin finished well when the chance came. There were a number of contenders for man of the match with the back row and half backs standing out but Michael Hayes deserved it, in addition to the try he scored, Michael kicked 3 penalties and 3 conversions. Waterford City would like to thank their sponsors Sun Life Financial, Brennan Catering, The Three Shippes, Kingfisher and The Premium Butcher.

Thurles RFC News

Courtesy of Brian Scanlon, Club PRO

With the sad passing over the weekend of Caroline (King) Cornally, partner of Paudie Lanphier, one of our senior players, both senior games were postponed as a mark of respect. Thurles RFC would like to extend our deepest condolences to Caroline's family at this sad time.

On the field, the U15 and U16 boys were both away to very strong opposition

Young Munster 43 Thurles 17
Thurles youths had a tough weekend. The U16s were away to Young Munster in the second round of the Pan Munster and the 15s were away to Clanwilliam in the league. The 16s had a nightmare start when they found themselfs 26 points down after 8 mins. Thurles then started to play and after Thurles put some phases together Jack Flanagan put in a cross field kick to put Ed O'Gorman into space and he scored in the corner which was converted.""

Thurles U16 Boys Team with coaches Sean Flanagan, Jim Ryan and Willie Finane

Thurles scored two more tries in the second half one when Seamus Holohan made a break from the back of a scrum and touched down near the touch line. the Young Munster pitch is a wide pitch and the conversion though on target just fell short.

Thurles made their way up the pitch and Ed O'Gorman went over in the corner for his second try of the night. Thurles forwards played very well mauling the ball from line outs but it was the Young Munster backs that were a class apart and sometimes seemed to score tries at will. Thurles were unlucky on three separate occasions not to score tries. The Thurles boys conducted themselves very well and at times played some entertaining rugby. Hopefully they will learn from this experience and can give Tralee a competitive game next weekend at home in Loughtagalla.

Thurles RFC U15 Boys v Clanwilliam RFC
The u15s had a similar fate away to Clanwilliam in the u15 developement league with Clan. scoring at will out the backs Thurles then started to keep the ball tight taking on Clan through the forwards and their hard work was eventually rewarded when Ciaran Murphy scored a try after the pressure applied by the Thurles forwards caused Clan. to make a mistake on their own line. The second half was a tighter affair with Thurles camped in the Clan half but could not make the pressure tell and it was Clan who scored two breakaway tries. It was a difficult week end for theses two teams. Its time to regroup at training this week as their is a lot still to play for.

We were hopeful of a good result in this game to guarantee us a qtr final place and we were up against a big strong Dungarvan team that have very strong running backs that put us under serious pressure in the first half.

Sean Ivess got us off to a great start with 3 points from a penalty . Sean contributed 3 tries, 3 conversions and a penalty in this game , one try was very memorable as he intercepted a ball just outside our own 22 and he ran the length of the pitch to touch down under the posts.

Colm McSweeney got a try and two conversions, Colm's tries was a great team score after working the ball through a number of rucks and playing it out from our scrum half Darragh Fox to Tommy Darcy to Eoin Sheridan into to hands of Colm to get over for a great score.

Mark Broderick , Sean Murphy and Tommy Darcy each scored a try to give us a convincing win.
Only downside to our two great victorys was an injury sustained to our scrum half Shane Lee. We wish Shane a speedy recovery.

North Munster League Under 15's Semi Final
Ennis RFC – 17 NCW RFC – 15
Newcastle West travelled to Ennis last Sunday morning to play Ennis in the semi – final of the North Munster League .Coaches Vinny O'Doherty, Philip Wrenn and Dave Flanagan had this group of players well prepared to face which is arguably one of the best teams in Munster. The fog just cleared enough to see from one end of the pitch to the other, and that proved to be plenty, because the game that ensued was all encompassing.
Newcastle West were well up for this one having prepared meticulously over the last number of months. Captain Micheal Murphy lead out his troops and they lined out to take the Kick off from Ennis.

A clean take by Cormac Nash saw us on the attack. A fantastic display from the pack saw great ground being made before Micheal was unfortunate to go off with an injury after only 5 minutes of play and was replaced by Paudie Flavin. Killian Fitzgerald took over the Captain's role but was only one of several leaders for the visitors .Jack Kenny was over for our first try and the opening score of the game. Our defence in the first half was immense with hard tackles going in from 1 to 15. Ennis were packed with quality runners who were both fast and strong but all met an impenetrable defensive line. Liam Molyneaux and Tom Murphy marshalled 2 very talented wingers to touch on several occasions, whilst Eamon Ambrose and William Cahill looked after the centre. Ryan white made a fantastic break and made it over for our second try just before half time. Newcastlewest lead 10 -nil at the break.

Newcastlewest continued to put pressure on Ennis for the opening 5 minutes of the second half with Stephen Lyons putting probing kicks in behind their back 3.Charlie O'Doherty was having a great game ,and was a real thorn in Ennis' side at scrum time. Full back Dylan Cahill was unfortunate to take a knock and had to be replaced by Ross Donovan. Lady luck started to shine for Ennis with a break up the wing from their winger Tony Odubote who happens to hold the national record for the 100M and 200M.They got a new lease of life after that and piled on the pressure resulting in a knock on from our side and a scrum to them inside our 22.Despite heroic tackling by Adam Flanagan and Evan Donovan, they were gaining inch by inch until they finally got over for their second. It was hard won though, as their winger went off injured as unfortunately did our centre William Cahill. David O' Donovan came on to deputise and Emmet Wrenn and Liam McSweeney came in on the wings.

They scored and converted their third try with 1 minute remaining. However Newcastle West showed tremendous character and courage to make the most of the remaining time, and with typical Munster belief they competed and won turnover ball from the restart. Disciplined, they went through the phases, with forwards Cian Walsh, Killian Fitzgerald, Ryan and Jack making ground to see Paudie over for a try at the death. Unfortunately the conversion didn't go our way and we were to lose out by the narrowest of margins.
Whilst Newcastle West didn't win on the scoreboard the excited crowd had the pleasure of witnessing a fantastic game of quality rugby by 2 very talented group of young players, where each player gave it his all. Ennis were most gracious in their comments afterwards and breathed a huge sigh of relief in the knowledge that they had just about got out of jail on this occasion.

Newcastlewest ; Killian Fitzgerald, Jack Kenny, Evan Donovan, Cian Walsh, Cormac Nash, Adam Flanagan, Ryan White, Micheal Murphy ( C ) Charlie O ' Doherty, Stephen Lyons, William Cahill, Eamon Ambrose, Tom Murphy, Liam Molyneaux, Dylan Cahill. Subs Ross Donovan, Liam Mc Sweeney, Tiernan Mason, Michael Mc Mahon, Emmett Wrenn, David O ' Donovan, David Condon, Paudie Flavin

U13s
Ever Improving 13s Record Another Win: Newcastle West – 36 Old Crescent – 0
On Sunday morning last our under 13s hosted Old Crescent. There was a dense fog that never lifted throughout the game. We got off to a very strong start with David Walsh going over for an early brace. Aaron Heffernan added a conversion to with them. Old Crescent started to gain a foothold in the game as we approached the midway point in the first half and put us under a lot of pressure. The pressure was relieved when Todd Donovan earned an excellent turnover. From the resulting penalty Bobby Donovan picked up the ball on our own 22 and proceeded to go the length of the field for a brilliant individual try. Kevin O'Connell added the extras to leave the half time score 19-0. In the second half the boys picked up where they left off. Another try form Bobby Donovan was followed by one from Kevin O'Connell. With the last play of the game David Walsh scored another try to complete his second hat-trick of the league. It capped off the best performance of the season. In our last two games we have scored 109 and managed to keep the oppositions scoreless.

Bruff RFC News

Courtesy of:- Seamus Sheahan, Club PRO
Everyone at Bruff RFC would like to congratulate Dylan Reeves-Wasik on making the squad for the Irish youths Clubs team who play Italy in an upcoming fixture. Dylan who captained the Munster clubs team this season is a member of the Bruff U18's team who recently captured the North Munster league title and are currently competing in the Pan Munster u18's league.

U20's League: Bruff Vrs UCC
The U20s were in action on Saturday at home to UCC. This was the first game in the second phase of the newly re-formed 20's league. Phase 1 comprised of all of the North Munster teams as well as the Connaught teams with Bruff finishing 3rd in the initial part of the league.

Phase 2 brings the top 5 teams together with the teams from the rest of Munster. This was the start of a run of 5 games for the 20s over 5 consecutive weeks.

Bruff started well and were in control for long periods of the game; however failure to convert changes coupled with a high penalty count against, cost Bruff dearly. Bruff made a number of line breaks in the first half through Eric Finn & Liam Treacy but these opportunities were to prove fruitless. The Bruff half backs of John Carew and Dave O Grady controlled territory well keeping Bruff in the UCC half, but too many small things going wrong lead to a 0-0 scoreline at half time. It was UCC who had the best chance of the opening 40 but failed to score knocking on just over the Bruff try line.

With the forwards well on top in open play the second half followed the same pattern as the first with Bruff in control everywhere except on the score board. The turning point in the game came shortly after half time when College intercepted a Bruff pass and scored a converted try under the Bruff posts.

To their credit Bruff never gave up and put huge pressure on the College line for most of the second half. Shane Doona was unlucky to be stopped short after a great 50m run with a number of other Bruff players going close to scoring from a series of pick and drives. UCC have always had a great pedigree at U20's level and they again proved how resilient they can be by holding Bruff scoreless for the full 80 minutes winning out on a scoreline of 0-7.

Bruff don't have time to dwell on this lose and will hopefully learn some lessons from this outing. They travel to Clonakilty next weekend to take on a combined Clonakilty/Kinsale.

Underage Rugby
The u18's travelled to Waterpark on Sunday to play round 2 of the Pan Munster league. Waterpark like Bruff have a good tradition in this competition having also won the title in recent years. Bruff trailed 7-0 at half time with the home side scoring a converted try early in the first half.

Bruff came out all guns blazing in the second half scoring 10 points in the opening 20 minutes. The first Bruff score came from the back off a good Bruff Maul. Hooker Tom Quigley controlled the ball well at the back and touched down for the 5 pointer. Kevin McManus hit the conversion before Cian Clifford added a spectacular drop goal shortly after. With the score now 10-7 to Bruff, Waterpark enjoyed a spell of good pressure and were rewarded with another converted try with only minutes remaining to make it 14-10.

Bruff attacked in waves and were unlucky not to be awarded what would have being the winning score right at the death. Bantry Bay are the visitors to Bruff next weekend in a must win game if Bruff are to get out of the group.

The u16's had a big win over Waterford City on Sunday morning and travel to Musgrave Park next weekend for game 2 of the Pan Munster league. A bus will be running from Bruff on the morning of the game. Please contact any of the coaches for details.

The U15's beat Shannon 15pts to 10 on Sunday in the semi-final of the League. Bruff started well and had the Shannon pack on the back foot early on. After a spell of Bruff pressure Ethan Butler crossed the line for our first score .Adam O Dwyer converted to leave Bruff 7pts up after 10 mins. Shannon came back into the game and from a lucky bounce there winger caught the ball and scored in the corner. Bruff restarted and pressed Shannon again where Pa Maher picked a ball from the back of a ruck and crossed for our 2nd try.

The conversion was missed leaving the score 12pts to 5 .Shannon got there 2nd try just approaching half time, score at the break was 12pts to 10. Both teams came out for the second half with it all to play for and with both sides playing good rugby it was anyone's game. Mid-way through the second half with Bruff on the attack we were awarded a penalty in the Shannon 22 . Up stepped Adam O Dwyer and slotted it between the posts to put 5pts between the sides. This was to be Bruffs last score of the game. For the rest of the game Shannon went looking for scores but for some brilliant defending from everyone on the Bruff team Bruff held out in a nail biting finish for a well-earned and hard fought win .Bruff now go on to play Ennis in the league final , well done boys.

The u13's had a good win away to Shannon on Sunday coming away with a 19-5 victory.

Ladies Rugby

Weekend Round Up:
Our ladies were the only adult team that played last weekend. We entertained Bruff in the League, but much to our disappointment Bruff only had 10 players so we could only play a training game. We played two twenty minute sessions against Bruff and the third twenty minute we played against ourselves as we have a full panel available for selection on the day. Well done to everyone involved and those 4 points should guarantee us a place in the play-offs. Next game is this Sunday at 2pm against Bruff in bruff.
The ladies were drawn Clonmel in there cup draw, fixture will be played on the 22nd of February.

Fitness Classes:
There will be fitness classes starting soon in the club both indoor and outdoor, in the morning time. LM Active will be running the classes, once we have a full list of classes and times we will make them available. Coffee Morning:
The Bunnies coaches are holding a coffee morning on Sunday the 15th of February @12pm (after training). The coaches are looking to introduce themselves and chat with the parents and guardians of the girls. We are also hoping some of the parents will get involved in the running of the bunnies in any way possible. The underage needs to fund-raise to pay for the new set of jerseys. We have had some great ideas in a table quiz and an Easter bunny hunt around Easter time. To make these events possible we need support. Also if you have any other ideas to raise funds for the jerseys please share it with us. There will be commentary tea, coffee and snacks on the morning. So please come along get involved and meet our coaching staff.
