Munster Junior League Division 2: Waterford City 71 – 0 Crosshaven
City picked up a well-deserved bonus point win with 11 tries against Crosshaven in Kilbarry. The home team made a few errors early on but didn't take too long to get up and running. Simon O'Hara got the scoring going when he touched down following a great scrum from the pack 5 metres out. Simon then picked up a second try in similar fashion when the pack again overpowered the Crosshaven scrum. City began to play some excellent rugby, attacking wide which got the speedy Ryan Philips away for two trys, Darren Walsh also showed clinical finishing for a score and Nicky Jacob got in for an excellent individual score. City led 38-0 at the break but weren't done yet.

City kept up the pace despite Alec Fitzmaurice receiving a yellow card early in the half. Simon O'Hara picked up his hat trick with a brilliant individual break before Darren Walsh added his second try of the game. Ryan Philips then bagged himself a hat trick two with another excellent try. Damien Kennedy showed his finishing ability when supporting a great break from Cian Foskin. Damien then powered over for a second score to finish the game. Michael Hayes had a good game and converted 8 of the tries to put a big 71 points on the board.

There were excellent performances from Karl Reade and Jason Power, despite all the try scoring it was Ben Duggan who picked up man of the match with an impressive performance. J2 South League Round 2: Waterford City 8 – 17 Cork Constitution
City went 7-0 behind after 20 mins when Cork Con got in for a try having broken a couple of tackles in midfield. The response from City however was excellent and they began to play some good rugby, City had a penalty converted by Connor Brennan and then created some good try scoring opportunities. A couple of balls didn't quite go to hand when City looked in for tries but they crossed the line to lead 8-7 just before the half. Off the back of a scrum the backs moved the ball wide and a great line from Aidan Power got him in behind the Cork Con defence, he then offloaded to the supporting Stephen Walsh for a well worked try.

The home side were against the wind in the second half and despite controlling possession for long periods, it was Cork Con who scored next with a penalty to go 10-8 ahead. City had a couple of chances to score in the last quarter but they didn't convert and a late try from Con denied a losing bonus point for the Waterford side. There were excellent performances in the pack from Joe Delahunty, Ciaran Crowley and Elliot O'Mahony.

Thurles RFC News

Thurles First XV Munster Junior League: Thurles RFC 8 – 0 Presentation RFC
Thurles RFC First XV continued to keep the pressure up at the top of the table with a hard fought win over a determined Presentation side at Loughtagalla on Sunday last. This was a very different Presentation side compared to the one that Thurles faced in Limerick back in October in the Cup, when Thurles came away with a 3-47 victory.

On what was a bitterly cold day with a strong cross field wind blowing, conditions were far from ideal as Thurles got the game underway, kicking deep into Presentation territory. Thurles put some good pressure on the chase but the Limerick men were able to clear their lines with the aid of the wind.

The action in the first quarter (and throughout the game to be fair) was sloppy from both sides, the greasy conditions were causing havoc, with a number of knock-ons and penalties awarded for players going off their feet.

There was a countless number of scrums, an area where Thurles were on top for the majority of the game, with McCormack, Skehan and O'Mahony taking care of business in the front row. It was on 30 minutes, when after a number of minutes camped on the Presentation try line, Thurles had been awarded a number of penalties 5 yards out, as they continued to go for scrums expecting to maybe see the referee to run in under the post to give a penalty try, but credit to the Thurles pack, they drove the opposition scrum back once more for No.8, Donnacha Duggan to touch down and open the scoring, the conversion was missed to leave the score at 5-0.

Thurles had a few chances before the half time break to increase their lead from the boot of Aidan Dwyer but these chances drifted wide at the important moments, these missed kicks did remind everyone in attendance, the importance of the kick chasers, as Peter Kinane wasn't far off claiming the loose ball, but it was Eoghan O'Dwyer who came agonisingly close to touching down, as the Presentation defender was just that fraction of a second quicker getting his hands to the ball and clearing his lines to end the half.

The second half continued in a similar fashion to the first, a lot of scrums, where Thurles continued hold control. Thurles dominated in the possession stakes in the second half but were unable to converted this possession to scores on the board. Thurles introduced Club Captain Brian Lyons, who was returning from injury, Joey Kelly and Damien Dunne, who was making his debut for Thurles in the pack.

Despite getting little return from their efforts, Peter Kinane, Eoghan O'Dwyer, Shane Moloney and Larry O'Gorman continued to hammer at the Presentation defence. After the latest infringement by the Limerick men, Thurles decided take their points, with Aidan Dwyer slotting over to increase the lead to 8-0.

There was no further score after this, Thurles had enough chances throughout the game to put a high score up but were left frustrated, as the Presentation team seemed to be going down at every break in play and kill whatever momentum was being created by the home side. Presentation did start to have a go when their losing bonus point was put out of reach, but credit to the Thurles defence, the Limerick men didn't get out of their own half in the last quarter of the game.

As the final whistle blew, there were sighs of frustration; but to the team's credit, they ground out another win, against a much improved Presentation side, which keeps them well positioned in 3rd place in the League.

Thurles RFC First team continue their promotion push next week as they once again travel to League leaders Bandon this weekend, a repeat of the Munster Junior Shield Semi Final, which Thurles lost by the narrowest of margins before Christmas.

Thurles will travel full of confidence to the Cork venue, and hope that all current and past players or club supporters who are free this weekend, make the effort to get to Bandon to shout on the lads, continued support is greatly appreciated and we would like to acknowledge the large crowd who turned out on Sunday despite the weather conditions, we hope you have thawed out.

Thurles Second XV: St. Senan's RFC 25 – 7 Thurles RFC
The Thurles Second XV, travelled to Co. Clare on Saturday to face St. Senan's, in the final game of the Gleeson League, in preparation for the Cup competitions which will be commencing soon.

Thurles put in a great shift at the Clare venue, having travelled with high numbers once again, the Tipperary men dominated the majority of the game, with first team members Dwayne Stanley, Eoin Long, Ollie Delaney and Tommy Connolly putting in a good days work, with the latter scoring a great try and converting it himself (right).

Thurles had the winning of this game at various stages throughout, having worked so hard to get into great scoring position, the failure to execute the final pass was a killer and some very soft tackling in defence didn't help, as St. Senan's took their chances when they came about.

There was increased numbers of Second XV team members training during the week, which was great to see, another good crowd this week would do a lot, so there can be work done on finishing plays and defence organisation, it is also great benefit to the First XV to have large

With a number of important Cup games coming up in the next few weeks for the 2nd XV, it would be great to have large numbers training on Wednesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm sharp with the aim of bringing some silverware to the club in 2015. New Players are always welcome.

Thurles U18 Girls Friendly: Thurles 12 – 12 Cashel
On Sunday last, our U18 girls played Cashel in a challenge match. Having performed so well in our first two, games, we were really up for this game against a new Cashel team in a prelude to our league match next week. However, on game day, we faced the prospect of being down 6 players. With Cashel also short players, this was a 13-a-side match. Thurles started brightly and seemed in control of the game when Cashel broke through and scored a try. The conversion was missed when Holly O'Dwyer charged out to block the kick.

The game was not back on long when Cashel again broke through and Cashel got in for a second try, which they converted this time. This was not going according to plan. 12 – 0 down after 10 minutes.

Thurles then switched the team around and this stalled the Cashel offensive. Again taking a captain's role, Catriona Molumby was excellent in the tackles, and Mary O'Connor as well as the experienced Aisling Scanlon held firm, tackled hard and and turned over rucks.

With plenty of other go forward ball from the pack, including Kerry Fitzgerald, Bhrianne Beatty and newcomer Saoirse Caffrey, Thurles slowly got the upper hand. Most of the last 10 minutes was spent in the Cashel 22, and with about 5 minutes to go to half time, Holly O'Dwyer got in for a try. This was converted by Aisling O'Hagan. From the off, Thurles were on the offensive again, but Cashel held out, helped by a number of handling errors from the Thurles side, and the half ended 12 – 7.

In the second half, Thurles, with the wind at their backs, were much quicker to the ball. Amy Kirby and Megan O'Halloran were now in command in the centre, ably supported by Aisling O'Hagan who had switched to full back and made a number of crunching tackles on the few occasions Cashel got through. We must also mention Aibhe Connolly and newcomer Niamh Graham on the wings who were always a threat, and most of the second half was played in the Cashel half. With about 10 minutes to go, Jane Ryan, who was playing an outstanding game again, managed to get through the Cashel cover and with them scrambling around the line, she got over for a try. Thurles unfortunately missed the conversion, but the game was all square.

Thurles pushed time and time again. Aisling O'Hagan went through seven Cashel players at one stage before she was taken down about 5 metres short, Aisling Scanlon made excellent ground only to be just kept out, and Cartiona Molumby and Jane Ryan also going close. Holly O'Dwyer made excellent darts around the edges of the ruck, and all the forwards pushed hard, but we were just held out. The game finished with another Thurles attack ending when Cashel scrambling the ball into touch, and they were the more relieved team at the final whistle.

So it ended 12 – 12. Round two is next Sunday in Cashel, but if Thurles manage to convert possession into points, then it should be another victory for this emerging team.

Thurles U16 Boys: Waterford City 20 – 31 Thurles RFC
Thurles U-16s travelled to Waterford City last Saturday to play a friendly under lights. Waterford City are a strong team who finished second in the East Munster league. So it was going to be a tough assignment. City started strongest keeping the ball away from the Thurles lads. City made it into the Thurles 22 when Thurles won the breakdown and turned over the Ball. Thurles took advantage of the wind and the hill to work the ball into the City 22 and after quick hands by the backs, Kieran Dunne scored the first of a brace of tries the second try from a similar try as the first. Thurles and City went into the break 10 all.

The second half was going to be more difficult for Thurles, who were now playing against the wind and up against the hill. Thurles forwards played very well against. a bigger city pack tackling and being very disciplined at the break down. Dylan Mason was a torn in the City rucks turning over several rucks. Ciaran Murphy had a great game filling in as a prop his first time playing that position.

Colin O Shaughnessy also had a good game throwing well at line outs and carrying well around the field. Thurles scored again after they worked their way up the field and quick thinking by Jack Flanagan who kicked the ball across the field to the winger Ed O'Gorman who caught the ball and scored under the posts.

Thurles went 7 ahead and also grew in confidence with Shane o Sullivan catching the kick off and carrying the ball back into the City half. Dylan O'Shaughnessy made a break at a ruck and was stopped just short of the line. The Thurles support was there and after a quick recycle the ball was flashed out the backs to Ciaran Connolly who scored a try which was converted by the outhalf. City scored a consolation try at the end of the match.

Newcastle West RFC News

BACK TO THE TOP: Newcastle West 27 (15) Kinsale 20 (7)
They say a week is a long time in politics but a week is also a long time in rugby, my caption last week was 'Down But Not Out' and so it turned out to be exactly that by 4.30 pm last Sunday in Cullinagh, with Kinsale beaten and five points in the bag all attention was turned to Clonmel's game in Shannon town and the result that was being hoped for came to pass.

Clonmel were beaten and we now are on top of the first division again leading by a point with our destiny now back in our own hands. Played on a cold day with a strong wind blowing in to the club house, Kinsale won the toss and elected to play against the elements. The home side started at pace and were first on the score board after five minute with a penalty by Alan Roche. Some people may have thought that Kinsale were going to roll over but they had different things on their mind and although the home side were dominating the set piece it was Kinsale who would be first to cross the line for a try maybe more attributable to errors by the home side, but the Kinsale forward worked heard in the loose to score a converted try on twenty two minutes to take the lead. This signalled alarm bells in the home side and a patient build up lead to James Kelly crossing the line for a try which was converted by Alan Roche.

With a minute to go to half time NCW are pressuring the visitor's line and get a five metres scrum, they drive Kinsale over the line but a knock-on gives the scrum back to Kinsale. But the a great strike by Sean Corbett wins the ball and an eight man drive puts John Sheehan in for our second try and a 15-7 lead at half time.

Two minutes after the restart and a penalty converted by Kinsale closes the gap to five points. Kinsale now have the momentum and capitalising on numerous errors and penalties being conceded by NCW, they get there just reward with an unconverted try on forty seven minutes and the games is locked at 15-15.

This game is not being made easy for spectators or management. But right from the kick-off the home side attacks and from the ensuing drive up field Tommy Kelleher Junior gets over for a well-deserved try which Alan Roche converts.22-15 and the home side are now chasing a bonus point, they say form is temporary but class is permanent or like a fine wine some get better with age and it arrived in the Form of veteran Richard Langford who secured the bonus point after phenomenal work by backs and forwards when crossing the line in the 65th minute which Alan converted. But Kinsale were not going away and again a scored a try in the 70th minute to leave us all on the edge of our seats for the last ten, Kinsale came looking for the draw but the home side held out.

And the train is back on the tracks with NCW now on top but with four tough matches to go, next Sunday we travel to Kilfeacle in Co. Tipperary which can only be described as going to the lion's den, you get nothing easy up there. Abbeyfeale 24 – 0 Killarney
Abbeyfeale started the game in a fortuitous fashion when from the kick off, Killarney knocked-on just shy of their 22. With the home sides scrum being an highlight so far this season, it presented them with an opportunity to test Killarney's mettle in defence. In a less expansive, yet equally effective move, the home side quickly seized the initiative as Michael Enright crashed over to chalk up the first try of the day and winger David Collins, taking over the kicking duties for the day, added the extras with ease.

Abbey were buoyed by this blistering start and were not intent on resting on their laurels early in the game. Having been awarded a free kick directly from the restart, the home side chose to attack from inside their own 22, a decision, although ambitious and risky, proved futile as they conceded a penalty for holding on. With Killarney having the advantage of the strong wind behind them, they somewhat surprisingly opted to find touch. Abbey's defence held firm though and were rewarded with a reprieve, when the away side knocked-on just inside the home sides 5 metre line.

Killarney, on the back foot for most of the first half, were looking to breach the home sides defence, when they made their way inside Abbey's 22. Following a take at the line-out, they spread the ball out wide to their first centre for the crash, only for him to be met with a wall in defence, when the rock solid Liam McEnery, only recently returning from a rib injury, put in a massive hit, forcing both a turnover and penalty for the home side.

This seemed to spur the home side on and when they made their way towards half way, a great take from John Browne at the line-out got the home sides maul rolling. A number of phases ensued and with the pressure mounting on the Kerry sides defence, they were forced to concede a penalty in order to halt Abbey's momentum. The home side eschewed the opportunity to kick for goal in favour of setting up a line-out on the Killarney twenty two-metre line. A great take from John Browne at the line-out saw the ball spread wide to Michael Enright who looked to enjoy some of the barnstorming charges at the Killarney defence. Abbey were quite content to work through the phases and were making ground. With the pressure taking its toll, the away side were penalised just in front of their posts. With Abbey looking to consolidate their lead, David Collins slotted over his attempt to increase the gap to ten points.

As with the start of the game in the first half, Abbey again started the second half with much intent and urgency, and were duly rewarded when Philip Collins dived over for an opportunistic try. Having been awarded a penalty, a magnificent kick to touch from Michael Roche, saw his side inside Killarney's five-metre line. A well worked line-out saw Liam O' Connor, impressive with ball in hand, drive to within inches of the oppositions try-line. With the away sides defence desperately trying to realign, Abbey's Philip Collins, spotted a slight gap around the fringe of the ruck to find his way over for the home side's second try of the day. With his brother David slotting over the extras, Abbey now held a commending lead and if Killarney had any hope of salvaging anything, they needed a response and quickly.

With the home side's scrum proving to be an asset, operating more efficiently than their counterparts, they piled the pressure on. With the ball being spread, it enabled the home side to work through a number of phases, effortlessly trying to breach the Killarney defence. With the away sides defence being stretched, Abbey spread the ball wide where it found winger Donagh Kelly, who drew one defender in before offloading to John Browne to dive over in the corner for his side's third try. From a difficult angle, Philip Collins, who grew in stature as the game progressed, converted the extras to give Abbeyfeale a twenty-four point lead.

Bruff RFC News

Underage Results
The U18's are through to the final of the North Munster league thanks to a 36-0 win over Young Munster. Played in perfect conditions on Sunday Bruff didn't have it all their own way as the scoreline may suggest. Young Munster dominated territory and possession for long periods of the game but Bruff's hard tackling and well organised defence saw them keeping the visitors scoreless for the 80 minutes.

Bruff lead 17-0 at half time thanks to 3 first half tries and a conversion. Kevin McManus scored the first try of the game thanks to some good hands from Jack O'Grady on the left wing after 5 minutes. Sean Hartigan was next to score from a well worked maul from a 5 metre line out. Jack O'Grady who set up the first try got a try of his own 5 minutes later after a good spell of Bruff pressure, number 8 Dylan Reeves-Wasik popped up in the centre of the field and again some crisp handling from the big back rower set O Grady away to touch down to the right of the posts which was converted by McManus.

Bruff showed the strength of their bench in the second half with 3 further tries coming from Substitutes. Again Munsters dominated the early play but never managed to threaten the Bruff line. Mattew O Dea added the 4^th try for Bruff mid-way through the second half before Aaron Daly helped himself to a brace before the full time whistle. All 3 second half trys were similar in that Bruff retained possession well and went through the phases before spreading the ball through the hands. Kevin McManus converted 2 of the trys to make it 36-0 in the end
Bruff can now look forward to a final meeting with Newcastle West next weekend.

The U16s beat Richmond 25-0 in their last game of league and wait other results to find out who they will play in semi-final. It was scoreless at half-time but tries from Jack Houlihan 2, Bradly Riordan, Jason Fitzgibbon and Jack O Malley settled the game giving Bruff a well deserved victory.

The U-13s lost 24-0 to Ennis

Adult Rugby Latest
The 2nds were in action on Sunday Vrs Garryowen in the senior 2^nd league. They came out victorious on a scoreline of 16-10 thanks to trys from Brian Cahill & Tom O Dwyer. Brian Cahill and Marcus Mulvihil also kicked a penalty each.

Women's Rugby
This first match of the year was never going to be easy after a 5 week hibernation. We could have done without vomiting / flue bugs and other hurdles life seems to throw up (work, children, study and more work). So although 15 of us travelled to Abbeyfeale together with coach Mick Cahill, team manager Sharon Conway and physio Debbie Carroll and a handful of supporters, we finished the match with 9 players and a scoreline of 41-0.

Abbeyfeale RFC are known to have some good footballers in their team, and although we managed some good spells of possession and winning ball back at kick offs, we were not able to stop their strong runners from breaking through our line 7 times.

Of course we'll regroup and get ready for our next challenge which is likely going to be on Sunday 25th January (team & venue TBC). Next training on Friday 16th January. If you want to have a go at tossing around an oval ball and like the occasional wet feet and complementary mudbath, do call in. The Bruff U-15 and U-18 girls are due to travel to Mallow this coming Saturday 17th Jan to play together with Bantry RFC against the respective Mallow teams. The 15s ko at 12pm and the 18's at 1pm. Munster Junior League Division 1: Waterpark 20 – 27 Kilfeacle
Waterpark and Kilfeacle served up a very competitive game in Ballinakill last Sunday with the Tipperary side securing the win while the home side took a losing bonus point. Waterpark started the game well with Outhalf John Lillis landing a long range penalty. Kilfeacle lay siege to the Waterpark try line and eventually crossed for a try after a number of pick and drives by the forwards which gave their winger JJ Cooney the easy task of dotting down. The away side enjoyed their best period of the game now and their second try of the game came from Diarmuid O'Donnell following a rolling maul. The home side got their opening try of the game when Jerry Millar brushed off a number of defenders to score under the posts, Lillis added the extras. Half time score Waterpark 10- Kilfeacle 17.

Lillis opened the scoring in the second half with a well struck penalty, but soon after he was sin binned. At this point the defences were on top with the game been played on the halfway line. Kilfeacle took control again and scored 10 under answered points with Keith Burke scoring a try and outhalf Darren Lowry landing a conversion and penalty. Waterpark fought back with a try from prop Rory Hannon which Lillis converted to give the home side a losing bonus point.

Considering the injuries and players unavailable due to work and travel, Waterpark again showed great team spirit to get the bonus point. More players should be available for selection next week which could make the difference.

Under 18 Friendly: Waterpark 21 – 24 Cashel
A disappointing start to the new year for this side, with Cashel taking the spoils in Ballinakill last Sunday morning. James Kiersey scored Waterparks opening try which he also converted but Cashel held the lead at the break. The home side changed all but 2 players at halftime with the Pan Munster competition on the horizon.

Out half Cian Hogan got Waterpark's second try to give the home side the lead but some poor defence handed the lead back to Cashel. James Dodds got Waterparks third try but the visitors held on for the win. A good exercise for the team as it was their first game in 5 weeks, with Jack Nolan, James Liew, James Kiersey and Cian Hogan to the fore for the home side.

Under 16 Friendly: Enniscorthy 15 – 5 Waterpark
Waterpark played an Enniscorthy under 17's side last Saturday; the visitors played into the wind in the first half and were ten points down at the break. A try from Colm Smyth put the game in the balance but Enniscorthy held on for the win.

Under 15 League: Waterpark 50 – 22 Clonmel
A good winning start to the league for this side that crossed for a total of 8 tries.
Outhalf Ben Daly (3), centre Jack Pierce (2),centre Brian Acheson (2), No 8 John Monaghan and full back Niall Bowe got one apiece. Daly landed 5 conversions. Still plenty of work to be done but the passing game is developing well.

Under 13 League: Waterpark 49 – 31 Clonmel
As the score line suggests this was a very entertaining game with running rugby the order of the day with the home side coming out of top. Waterparks tries came from Cathal Scanlon with 4, Daniel Stokes, Cillian O Brien and Ely Cullen with one each. Cullen landed all 7 conversions.
