Junior 2 South League Section C – Waterford City 27 – 11 Waterpark
City secured an excellent bonus point victory at home against local rivals Waterpark. The away team played with the wind in the first half and started well, Park put City under serious pressure in the opening 15 minutes but only had a converted penalty to show for it. The City pack worked very hard all day and put their bodies on the line time and again to stop the opposition breaching the line early in the game, NJ Carlton, Elliot O'Mahony, Karl Reade and Cian Foskin all making a huge number of tackles.

After they went behind, City decided to keep hold of possession and started to get some structure into their play. The home team worked their way into the opposition 22 and won a penalty which Connor Brennan converted. City built on the momentum, a smart box kick resulted in a City lineout just 5 metres out, possession was secured and following a powerful pick and go from Andrew Condron, there was quick ball available to the backs. Connor Brennan sold a nice dummy and then pumped the legs to crash over the line. Park got another penalty late in the half but City were more than happy with the 8-6 lead at the break after playing into the wind.

Waterpark were not going down without a fight though and after City gave away a penalty, the away team kicked down the line and an impressive rolling maul gained 20 metres before collapsing over the City line for a try. Park led 11-8 early in the 2nd half but City responded well. Stephen Walsh, the City full back fielded a kick in his own half before making a lighting break back into the Park half, following a couple of phases, City moved the ball wide, some excellent hands from Paddy Halloran, Karl Reade and Stephen O'Rourke released Michael Hayes on the wing for a well worked try.

Having got the lead back, City began to play a more expansive game, City won possession and moved the ball wide, Damien Kennedy and Captain Nicky Jacob who both had excellent games held the Park defence before releasing Stephen Walsh into space on halfway. Stephen then beat 3 players to score under the posts for what was a brilliant try. City looked good for the win but there was 10 minutes left to add the bonus point and they did just that with the last play of the game when John Mc Nicholas powered over from close range following good work from Ciaran Crowley and the rest of the pack.

The young back three for City of Stephen Walsh, Aiden Power and Jake Philips looked threatening all afternoon, Stephen Walsh in particular stood out on the day and picked up man of the match for his performance.

U-16s Eastern Final: Waterpark 14 – 0 Waterford City
Hard luck to our under 16 team who are having a fantastic season, they lost out to Waterpark this week but there will be plenty more to come from this talented young side.

Thurles First XV: Munster Junior Shield Bandon RFC 14 – 12 Thurles
Thurles took to the road for a Saturday Night Lights game against Cork side Bandon, in what was their last outing for 2014. Bandon are flying high in the League and are unbeaten in all competitions to date, Thurles themselves though were travelling full of confidence, getting to this Semi-Final without having conceded a try in the competition.

Bandon kicked off with Thurles playing with the aid of the wind, from the first ball it was clear that the Thurles men were up for this game, with Larry O'Gorman, Colm Skehan and Donnacha Duggan making some great carries to put the team into a good attacking position.

The Thurles pack were well on top, especially in the scrums, where the front row of O'Mahony, Kelly and Skehan won 3 consecutive penalties, with the 3rd being slotted through the posts by Aidan Dwyer to open the scoring for Thurles, 0-3.

Thurles continued to ask questions of the home side, with Dwyer putting snow on the ball on a number of occasions to put pressure on the Bandon back three, with the Thurles line chase working excellently, O'Gorman, Shane Moloney and Adrian Bourke ensured the ball remained in the Bandon 22.

After a few attempts on the Bandon line, Eoghan O'Dwyer came close after an excellent run having beaten a number of defenders on the way, just to be stopped short, Nicky Irwin and John Coman also had attempts but the Cork men held tough to clear their lines. Bandon were starting to get themselves into the game and after a number of phases inside the Thurles half, they were awarded a penalty, the Bandon scrum stepped up to level proceedings, 3-3.

Bandon were starting to come to terms with the wind and were growing in confidence, they had a number of attempts at the line but were knocked back with some great hits from Brian Lyons, O'Dwyer and O'Gorman, who continued to show up all over the field. Bandon eventually received a penalty for a Thurles player creeping offside, which was slotted over to make it 6-3 in favour of the home side.

From the restart, Bandon worked their way back up the field and after a number of phases, an uncharacteristic lapse of concentration from the back of a lineout allowed the opposition Out Half sneak over the line for a try that went unconverted, to give them an 11-3 lead with 10 minutes left before the break.

Thurles regained some of their composure and from the restart, they challenged and won the kick off as Phil Kelly rose highest to put Thurles on the front foot. Some great breaks from O'Dwyer and Peter Coman put the Tipp men in good position and from a resulting ruck, a Bandon man fouled and Thurles were awarded a penalty which Aidan Dwyer stepped up to slot over to decrease the deficit. Dwyer added another penalty just on the half time whistle, after great carries from Dave Kelly, Duggan and Moloney had brought Thurles back up the field, to leave the score at halftime, 11-9.

The second half got underway, with Thurles now facing into a strong wind. The opening 25 minutes of the second half was largely spent inside the Thurles 22, with the Thurles defence showing some serious discipline, composure and hunger in keeping the Cork men out. Bandon had thrown the kitchen sink at Thurles with no reward. Thurles did manage to turnover a lot of ball during this period but the option of kicking to safety was not available due to the strong wind. During the last attack of this period of the game, Thurles managed to drive Bandon back from 5 metres out from their own line, back as far as the half way line, with massive hits from Colm Skehan and Phil Kelly leading the defence out of danger.

Thurles grew in confidence having defended their line for so long and were now getting their hands on the ball and making ground towards the Bandon try line. The Thurles management introduced fresh legs, with Ger McCormack, Conor Cooney and Charlie Langley joining the action.

With just under 10 minutes remaining Thurles made their way inside the Bandon 22 and came close through Duggan, Kelly and O'Dwyer before scrum half Nicky Irwin had found Aidan Dwyer, who had dropped back into the pocket, to nail the drop goal to put Thurles ahead, 11-12, in the closing stages of the game by the narrowest of margins.

Bandon restarted, kicking deep into Thurles territory knowing Thurles would have to run it out. Thurles once again went into defence mode, continuing to knock the cork men back, with more impressive tackling from McCormack, Duggan and Cooney, before the referee awarded an admittedly harsh penalty that could have gone either way 35 metres from goal near the touchline, much to the delight of large home crowd the Bandon kicker hit it straight over the blackspot get the lead with under 2 minutes left on the clock, 14-12.

Thurles had one more chance to pull this out of fire; Larry O'Gorman chased and excellently won the ball from the kick-off to gift Thurles possession. With one last great effort from all 15 players Thurles worked their way over and back across the pitch trying to get into scoring position. Thurles got their chance; they were awarded a penalty 35 metres out. They decided to have a go despite the wind and Aidan Dwyer stepped up to attempt to win it for Thurles.

A kick all kickers dream of, last play of the game, two points down, the kick to win it, ended in heartbreak for the Thurles men, as the well struck kick, just got held up in the wind and died off just short of the posts as Bandon progress to the final in February.

This was a fantastic game for both players and those in attendance, two great sides looking to play good clean rugby, it was a game that little would argue, either team deserved to lose, but that's the joy of sport, there has to be a winner.

Thurles now go into the Christmas break, still nicely placed near the top of the league, playing great rugby and all involved are fully looking forward to what 2015 is going to bring, already looking forward to the away challenge of Ballincollig on the 4th January when the League resumes.

The players and management would like to thank all those who travelled to Cork on a cold Saturday night to support the team, although we fell just short of the line, the support was greatly appreciated, it's a long season yet and hopefully 2015 will bring great success to Thurles RFC.

Thurles Women's Rugby: Bandon Women 10 – 31 Thurles Women
Thurles Women's RFC secured their fourth successive victory in their 2014/15 League campaign with an emphatic victory over Bandon this weekend. Sunday's 10 – 31 victory away in a hard fought battle against Cork side Bandon means that Thurles Women's RFC have a clean slate of victories and maximum points from their pre-Christmas games.

Thurles opened up the scoring within the opening minutes of the game with a wonderfully executed try from Aimee Crowe, who had a wonderful attacking game, right under the posts. The conversion from Megan Callanan was scored with ease. Thurles were in control from the re-start and succeeded in bringing play within yards of the try line and though some magnificent phases were played Thurles were unlucky not to add to their points tally and a knock-on gave Bandon possession once again.

Thurles were impressive in defence and managed to win back possession, an impressive solo run from Ashling Byrne meant that Thurles gained vital ground. Thurles were awarded a scrum in a wonderful attacking position which allowed for a passage of play that was text-book in its execution. A skilled offload to Niamh Coman from Miriam Harrison set Thurles up for their second try of the game. Rebecca Byrne (left) was the scorer on that"" occasion and although the conversion attempt was narrowly missed Thurles remained in comfortable control of the game. Thurles had a chance to edge further ahead with some magnificent play from Joanne Harrison and Aimee Crowe and the visitors were unlucky not to widen the gap between them and the home side as it approached half time. Thurles were ahead 0 -12 at the break of play.

Bandon opened up scoring in the second half with a try right under the posts. The conversion was missed leaving the score 5- 12 in favour of Thurles. Though Bandon seemed to be dominating possession it was Thurles from the re-start after that looked the more determined side, keen to put another score on the board and some wonderful team play and well-executed set pieces followed. Ruth Purcell scored Thurles' third try with a powerful drive over the line that echoed the determination of the entire squad. Megan Callanan's conversion attempt was slotted over and Thurles were once again in control of the game on a score of 5 – 19. With a bonus point now well within their sights Thurles were playing with a sense of purpose. They were rewarded for all their hard work when Ciara Quinn powered over the line to score the all important fourth try, securing the bonus point for the fourth time this season. A successful conversion attempt by Megan Callanan followed giving Thurles a convincing lead on a score of 5 -26.

Bandon scored an opportunistic try moments later to narrow the gap between the teams to 10-26. A missed conversion from them meant that a 16 point deficit remained. Thurles were not done yet however and a lineout in the dying minutes of the game set up a wonderful phase of play that saw Niamh Coman exhibit wonderful skill and some amazing off loads from the back line. Joanne Harrison was rewarded for her hard work when she scored Thurles' fifth and final try with a fantastic drive over the line and although the conversion attempt was unsuccessful Thurles finished the game with a convincing 10- 31 victory.

Some passages of play were frustrating with handling errors being committed by both sides leading to an incredibly high number of scrums being contested. The forwards worked hard and were dominant in the scrums giving Thurles the vital advantage. Although very much a team effort individual performances from forwards such as Maria Woodlock and Joanne Harrison and backs such as Niamh Coman and Ciara Quinn helped Thurles secure an impressive fourth consecutive bonus point victory leaving them with maximum points on the top of the table.

The women have a much deserved break ahead of an away game to Clonmel on January 12th. All support on that day would be very much appreciated and with the Thurles women very much on form you will not be disappointed.

Thurles U18 Girls Rugby: Thurles 31 – 19 South Cork
Onto our second game of the Munster League, and this time we were at home.

Having performed so well against Carrick with virtually a novice team, last Saturday 13th December we faced a team from South Cork (an amalgamation of a number of girls teams from the South of the City). We were unsure what to expect as we still had a number of new players, but we togged off in good spirits. However, before match time, we learned that one of our longer serving players had been taken to hospital the previous night. We all extend our best wishes to Kerry Fitzgerald and wish her a speedy recovery.

The game was played as 12-a-side. we were in high spirits as the ball kicked off, and this was proven when we were up 7-0 after three minutes when Aisling O'Hagan broke through the line and scored the opening try which she duly converted. South Cork then pressed hard but thanks to some brilliant defence, led by the Captain Catriona Molumby, we held firm. Then, almost against the run of play, Holly O'Dwyer broke through the line to score our second try, but unfortunately missed the conversion. Again South Cork attacked, but could find no way through, with some brilliant tackling again from all our players, but special mention in this regard has to go to Lara Unger and Jane Ryan. In one tackle, the ball was retrieved by Niamh Moore, playing her first match, and she ran in for her first try which Holly O'Dwyer converted. She had obviously gotten the taste for it as just before half time, Niamh went in for her second try, not bad for her first game. This left the half time score at 24-0..

The second half was a tighter affair. Jane Ryan got in for her first try ever in her second match, and Aisling O'Hagan converted. However, South Cork had the subs and being allowed to roll subs on and off certainly worked in their favour. After 10 minutes of the second half, they got their first try which they converted. Again, Thurles were under tremendous pressure, but held firm thanks to all the girls. Aisling Scanlon in the forwards encouraged the team onward and held the line brilliantly. The front row of Bhrianne Beatty, Mary O'Connor and Lara Unger had the upper hand in the scrum, but with Aisling Scanlon and Catriona Molumby in the second row, they were ably supported. Amy Kirby was excellent in the centre. Time and again the Cork girls went down the centre and were stopped, with everybody putting their body on the line. when they went down the wings, they found Aibhe Connolly and Melanie O'Halloran waiting for them. However, buoyed by being able to bring on fresh legs, Cork did get through with 10 minutes left but missed the conversion, and with three minutes to go, got through again to score and convert. The Thurles girls dug deep one last time, and held out for their first win of the season on a final score line of 31-19. Oh what a feeling. Well done girls.

This again goes to prove that it is never too late to start playing this fun game, and remember we have an U15 team too. So come along to training and give it a try. Training continues on Tuesdays and Fridays at 7:30 in the rugby club. Training this week switches to Thursday after which we plan to go out and celebrate a great first half to the season. See you then.

Thurles U-15 v Thurles U-16
Thurles u16s (below right) played Thurles u15s in an end of year friendly in Thurles last friday night under lights on the main pitch. The facilities in Thurles rival all the main clubs. It was a very entertaining game with a lot of scores from both teams. The game was played in great spirit by both teams and the quality of the rugby was very high. Both teams had to work for their tries because both teams worked hard at the breakdown.""

The U15s are looking forward to the U15 league starting in the new year and the U16s are looking forward to testing themselves against the stronger teams in Munster when they take part in the u16 Pan Munster competition to start at the end of January. The talent on display on Friday night bodes well for the Thurles senior team in the future and maybe even the Munster team too.

Training will start back in the new year.""

UBL Div 2B: Sligo -v- Bruff
For the second week in a row the seniors were forced into a number of changes with injuries, exams and work commitments causing havoc with team selection for the trip to Sligo.

Changes are expected at any level of competition but not many squads would be forced into 7 changes in the space of a week. John Clery, Keith Laffan, Ger O Connell and Mike Cooke where introduced into the pack, with Brendan Keogh, Kieran Downey & Mark Cosgrove all coming onto the bench.

In what turned out to be a battle of the boots Bruff were first off the mark when Sligo were penalised for being offside mid-way through the first half. Declan Bannon stepped up and kicked the 3 pointer which would turn out to be the only score of the opening 40.

Bruff went 6-0 up shortly after the half time break when Sligo were found guilty of holding on the ground.
Sligo brought it back to 6-3 when Bruff illegally collapsed an attacking maul before Bannon landed his third penalty to make it 9-3 to Bruff.

Bruff's best try scoring chance came with about 20 minutes left on the clock. Darragh Mulcahy was tackled high and the resulting penalty was kicked to the corner. Bruff won the line out but failed to capitalise with the Sligo defence standing strong. Sligo who are undefeated at home this season kicked 2 more penalties before full time and the sides finished all square at 9-9.

The seniors are now in 7th place in the league but have a game more played than the teams around them. We go into the Christmas break on 20 pts with 3 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats. The next game is scheduled for Saturday the 24th of January when we travel to Navan
