All-Ireland League Division 2B: Midleton 27 – 0 Boyne
Looking to bounce back from a loss the previous week, Midleton were determined to come good when hosting a travelling Boyne side that are struggling this season.
Boyne get play underway and mount an intense attack pushing Midleton back to their 22. Their game is expansive as they look to spread the ball wide and poke holes in the Midleton defence – an early penalty for Midleton relieves the pressure but only for a moment as we fail to find touch and Boyne are attacking again.
After 10 minutes of sustained pressure Boyne are still looking for an opportunity when Midleton start to gain the momentum and push Boyne back.
Some great pressure and soon its Midleton's turn to threaten the Boyne defence, and on 20 minutes are soon rewarded with an easy points opportunity through a penalty that sees the first score of the day and 3 points to Midleton.
Its not long before its 6 points and Midleton settle into their stride.
Pressure on again and its penalty opportunity for Midleton that Daly puts in the corner for a line-out and a drive for the line to give a pushover try to Dave Smyth. Daly converts and Midleton lead 13-0 at the break.
Second half and it's not relenting on the pressure from Midleton and its an early try in this time Rob Smyth getting the honours, another conversion for Paul and it's Midleton 20 Boyne 0. The next 20 minutes sees more pressure from Midleton but the Boyne defence is holding well until a quickly taken penalty sees Yorkie break through for Midleton's 3rd try.
At full-time it's Midleton 27 Boyne 0. It's now 4 from 6 and Midleton lie 5th in the table. This is a team with one objective – challenge for the division. Every man deserves praise yet again – strength of character and a determination to win that sees us well placed to travel North to face Armagh in what will be a tough battle at the North men also look to chase honours this season.

Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield: Waterford City 13-19 Mallow
City came up just short in their cup match against Mallow, it looked like City would score a try in the corner with the last play of the game but were just denied by a last ditch tackle which forced a knock on. Waterford City have made a habit of starting slow in recent weeks and it was the same story against Mallow.
The home team made too many mistakes early and found themselves trailing 12-6 at half time, Mallow scored a try on 15 minutes when a late run from the blindside winger found a gap in the middle of the City defence to score under the posts.
City responded well with a penalty from Michael Hayes on 20 mins and were playing some good rugby but another unforced error gave Mallow back possession, the away team moved the ball wide to their openside flanker who evaded a number of tackles and broke into the City 22. Mallow then spread the ball wide to the far side and used the overlap to score in the far corner.
City looked dangerous when they kept the ball in hand and increased the tempo, following strong runs from Ryan Phillips and Connor Power, the Waterford team reached the visitors 22 and the City pack forced another penalty which Michael Hayes converted.
The second half started with City keeping Mallow under pressure with good interplay between backs and forwards but they couldn't register a score. The Cork side then got back into City territory and put the home team under sustained pressure for a period, City managed to hold out though and regain possession but just went they looked to counter attack, a wide pass was intercepted for a try under the posts.
With 15 mins left on the clock it was a hard to see a way back for City but they almost pulled off a fantastic comeback. There was an increased sense of urgency in the home team and they put the visitors under severe pressure for the rest of the game, following some good defence from Mallow their line was finally breached when a clever chip over the top from Michael Hayes allowed Ryan Philips to outpace the covering defence to score. Michael converted and it was back to a one score game with 5 mins left to play.
A Ryan Philips break with the last play of the game got City in behind the Mallow defence again and when he fed Nicky Jacob who had made a great run, it looked like City might steel a win but a good covering tackle forced a knock on.
City would like to thanks their sponsors, Brennan Catering Supplies, Sun Life Financial, Kingfisher, The Three Shippes and The Premium Butcher.

Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup
Our men's 1st XV travelled to Tralee in Co. Kerry on Sunday last for their opening game of this season's Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup. After the previous weekend's away win over Galbally in the league, Clonmel was anxious to maintain their winning form with the side keeping a clean slate in their league campaign to date.
Two first half tries by Luke Hogan, both of which were converted by Dylan Cadogan were the outcome of the opening 40 minutes which saw possession traded between both sides and the Clonmel defence hold strong in the face of several drives byTralee
Neville Melbourne in action at the weekend
With both second half tries also converted by Cadogan and with no response by the home side, Clonmel ran out 28-0 victors in what was a very good performance by Clonmel.
Having received a bye into the quarter finals stage of the competition, Clonmel now face local rivals Kilfeacle who beat St. Senan's to book their place in the last four. This fixture is currently scheduled for December 21st in Clonmel at 2pm. Cobh Pirates and Skibbereen play the second semi-final on the same day.
There is no first team fixture this weekend with the squad taking a well earned break from league and cup rugby.
Ladies Team
Action in the Munster Women's League continues this weekend with Clonmel at home to Cashel on Sunday at 1pm. This is the third game for the Clonmel women in the league campaign, having beaten Bandon and lost to Thurles in their opening games. This will be a big test for the Clonmel side who were narrowly beaten by Cashel in a pre-season friendly in September.
Niamh Briggs
On the national stage, two Clonmel RFC former players were very much in the news last week with Ireland full back Niamh Briggs winning the rugby writers Women's Player of the Year award for the second successive year after her terrific performance in this summer's World Cup in Paris.
Congratulations To Dave Foley
In the men's game David Foley earned his first cap for Ireland lining out against Georgia on Sunday last and putting in a huge Man of The match performance. This was a great day for David, his family and the town of Clonmel and everyone on Clonmel RFC is tremendously proud of his achievement. Well done Dave.

Munster Junior League, Division 1: Cobh Pirates 28 – 14 Newcastle West
With a number of players unavailable due to previous commitment the management took the opportunity to give a run to a number of fringe players and in the process testing the strength in depth of the club squad.
It was a very tight game with Cobh only securing the win in the dying minutes of the game with a converted try. Sean McAuliffe making his first start with the first XV had an excellent game playing from full back and when moved in to scrum-half following an injury to Karl Hayes showed that he can give good cover across the backline. His two try's followed great work from the pack who dominated the game but making errors at vital times was to cost them throughout the eighty minutes.
Sean scored when he joined the line after Dave Foley broke a number of tackles and playing like his original position of centre set Sean up for a stroll in to the corner, Foley was then nominated to take the convert which he converted to huge roars from the travelling support, Cobh got a penalty which the converted and scored a try to take the half time lead at 10-7.
Cobh got an unconverted try early in the second half and also kicked to penalties to take them to 21-7.The visitors were not finished though and continued to press forward carrying in tight and it was a pick and dart from McAuliffe who got in under the posts which Foley again converted to give us a tense closing ten minutes with only seven points between them. When you go chasing a game which they did to their enormous credit a break away can happen but it was a great display by all and they were unlucky to be defeated. Cobh got a converted to give them a flattering result.
This was a great display and credit must go to all who stepped up to the mark in this game.
Best for Newcastle on the day were Richard Langford, Dave Foley and Mikey Berkery with Man of the match going to Sean McAuliffe
Newcastle West: Sean McAuliffe, Ronan Kelleher, Brian O Doherty ,Mikey Berkery, John Sheehan , Karl Hayes, Pa Galvin, Shane Magner, Declan Moloney, Dave Foley ,Mike McMahon, Murley Sheehan, Sean Leahy , Michael Culhane ,Richard Langford, TJ Relihan, Padraig Fogarty, James Corbett. Donal Egan
Scorers: Sean McAuliffe 2 trys, Dave Foley 2 Conversions
This Saturday November 22nd, All Ireland Junior Cup Qtr. Final, Newcastle West V Dundalk RFC 2.30 pm in Cullinagh.
So roll on next Saturday when the Quarter final of the most prestigious Cup competition in Irish Junior rugby takes place again at home. As I have said before in this column sport is about raising the bar and challenging yourself and this is what the club continues to do at all levels.
We had the biggest crowd ever at a match in Cullinagh when we defeated OLBC in the last round of this competition, let's make it bigger again and give our Dundalk competitiors a real Munster, Limerick and, most importantly, Newcastle West welcome.
It is the top team in Division 1 of Leinster Junior rugby versus the top team in Division 1 of Munster Junior rugby. See you there, where else would you be on Saturday?

Thurles Run Riot in Cork: Youghal RFC 0 – 74 Thurles RFC
*Match Abandoned after 60 minutes due to Injury to Youghal Player.
The Thurles First XV took to the road early on Sunday morning, looking to get back to winning ways having lost on the road to Castleisland and drawing with Clanwilliam in the Tipperary derby on their previous two outings.
On this occasion they faced the challenge of Cork side, Youghal in the Quarter Final of the Munster Challenge Shield. Youghal are a young side going through a period of transition, struggling near the foot of the League table whereas visitors Thurles are challenging for a promotion spot.
Thurles travelled with a full complement of players with the aim of booking a place in the Semi Final to be played just before Christmas. Thurles showed their intent and hunger straight from the off with Donnacha Duggan and Larry O'Gorman putting in a great chase from the kick-off and winning possession to set up an early attack.
The Thurles pack kept the ball for a number of phases with Jason O'Mahoney and Dave Kelly making some great carries. The ball was sent out wide and Thurles were bundled into touch just as they approached the line. Youghal won their own lineout but that didn't stop Thurles putting the pressure on. As the Youghal scrum half passed out to his kicker to clear, Thurles zoned in and Shane Moloney blocked the kick, recovered the ball and touched down to open the scoring with a try, which was converted by Aidan Dwyer, 0-7.
Straight from the restart, a great take from captain Brian Lyons, secured ball which Thurles cleared down field to set up camp in Youghal territory. Thurles reclaimed possession, with Conor Cooney awake to steal scrappy lineout ball. After a few short phases of play, Thurles were awarded a penalty that Aidan slotted over with ease, 0-10.
Thurles continued to inflict the pain on Youghal, as they played their way up the field again from the kick-off, some great work and running from the back three of Eoghan O'Dwyer, Adrian Bourke and John Coman put Thurles inside the home 22 before Coman drew the last man to send Aidan Dwyer in for a try that he converted himself for a 0-17 scoreline early in the game.
Thurles were on fire and everything they touched seemed to be turning to gold, as the hard work of the wingers, J. Coman and Bourke was rewarded as both touched down in each corner within minutes of each other, both of which were superbly converted again by Dwyer, 0-31.
Youghal eventually got their hands on the ball and put together a number phases as they attempted an advance on the Thurles try line but they were repelled each time with O'Gorman, Cooney and Lyons putting in some great tackles. Thurles absorbed the Cork side's pressure before Duggan got in to force a turnover. Thurles made their towards the half way line, with O'Mahony and Ger McCormack increasing their carry count.
As Thurles were building momentum, Irwin found Dave Kelly with a pass, who, not to be outdone by his front row partners, took off on a run that Brian O'Driscoll would have been proud of, beating six players along the way, this run paved the way for the back line to attack down the blind side, where Eoghan O'Dwyer (below) touched down and Aidan converted, for what was a great move start to finish, with Kelly being the architect, 0-38.
Before the half-time break, Thurles continued to pile the misery on Youghal, there was no let up as, Donnacha Duggan joined in on the scoring and Shane Maloney added his second try of the game, both went unconverted to leave the score reading 0-48 at halftime.
Thurles introduced Ollie Delaney, Colm Skehan and Joey Kelly shortly after half time, as the Tipperary men continued to turn the screw. Thurles put together some great team plays as they hammered at the Youghal line once again before Peter Kinane barged his way past some would be tacklers to add his name to the scoring charts, the try went unconverted, 0-53.
The ruthless nature of this Thurles performance continued, as Delaney sent John Coman in for his second try of the game after some great work further back the field from Skehan and McCormack. Eoghan O'Dwyer also added his second try of the game, after a trademark run from the full back increased the scoreline. With three Thurles players now on 2 tries each, it was Shane Moloney who took the honours, by crossing the line and completing a well-deserved hat-trick just before the hour mark, all of the above tries being converted by Dwyer for an impressive scoreline of 0-74 with just over 20 minutes remaining on the clock.
At the risk of sounding repetitive, Thurles had laid the foundations for another attack inside the Youghal 22, before a bad, accidental clash of heads between a Thurles and Youghal player, saw the Youghal player knocked out cold.
There was concern that the Youghal man might have done damage to his neck, so after the game already being held up for a period of time for the initial injury, the referee made the wise decision to call full time given the circumstances, so the player could receive treatment. The Youghal player was transferred to hospital as a precaution and was subsequently released after an x-ray.
Thurles will be delighted with their performance and the clinical nature in which they dismantled this Youghal side, but will be under no illusions as to the bigger challenges that lay ahead for the remainder of the season.
This win now puts Thurles into the Semi Final of the Munster Junior Challenge Shield, where they will face Bandon RFC on the 21st December at the Cork venue.
Next up for the Thurles First XV is a trip to Killarney on Sunday 30th November at 2.30pm in the Munster Junior League, all support would be greatly appreciated by the management and players and they would also like to thank all those who travelled to Youghal to support the team on Sunday.

U-16 Boys: Kilfeacle 7 – 38 Thurles
Thurles travelled to the hill last sunday to take on a Kilfeacle side that are building a formidable team. Thurles did not take their opponents for granted and the first half proved to be a tight affair. Thurles were first to score when from a penalty the forwards made a lot of movement and the ball was passed to Michael Ryan with some work to do he touched down. The conversion was converted by Jack Flanagan.
Thurles scored next when Nick Cooney made a break up the wing and was supported by Ed o Gorman who scored under the posts. Kilfeacle had their purple patch 10 mins before half time when they opened up Thurles a few times. It was the Thurles scramble defence that saved Thurles. Kilfeacle piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a converted try.
Thurles upped their game and after some tactical kicking by the out-half, Thurles went over for three more tries which were all converted. Thurles's next match is away in the quarter final of the cup to Fethard or Dungarvan.

Ulster Bank League Division 2B: Bruff -v- Tullamore
It was a case of what could have been for the senior team who were away to Tullamore in the UBL league on Saturday. Bruff lead for most of the game but only had a losing bonus point to show for their efforts at the end of the 80 minutes. It was a fantastic game of flowing rugby played in ideal conditions in the Spollanstown venue in Co Offaly.
Cheered on by a large travelling support Bruff were quick to start and had a try after 6 minutes. A Tullamore scrum in the middle of the field was sent retreating causing an untidy pick for the home sides no. 9. Bruff openside Andy White was quick to bounce which caused the ball to squirt out. Scrumhalf Tony Cahill kicked the ball into the Tullamore 22 and good chase by the Bruff backs forced Tullamore into a rash clearance kick. The ever alert Bruff winger Declan Bannon picked up the ball and broke a number of tackles before releasing centre Darragh Mulcahy to score in the corner.
Tullamore didn't waste much time and replied with a try of their own with 11 minutes on the clock to make the score 5-5. Bruff dominated territory and possession for the next 25 minutes and the pressure was rewarded on the 36 minute mark. Bruff were awarded a scrum on the Tullamore 5 metre line setting up a solid platform for No 8 Jake Considine to pick and drive. Bruff held on to the ball well and after a number of phases Captain Davie Horan borrowed under the Tullmore defence for the 5 pointer. That was the end of the scoring for the opening 40 making it 10-5 to Bruff at half time.
Tullamore pressed hard for the opening period of the second half but it was Bruff who were first to score. Bruff forced the home team into a knock on and from the resulting scrum out half Davie O Grady put in a huge relieving kick from the Bruff 10 metre line. Again the chase was excellent and Tullmore were forced into giving away a penalty in front of their own posts. Bruff winger Declan Bannon converted the chance to make it 13-5 Bruff.
Again Tullamore were quick to respond and added a converted try on 50 minutes to make it 13-12. On 55 minutes Bruff won a lineout on the Tullamore 10 Metre line. Blind side wing forward Danny Keogh made the hard yards before scrum half Tony Cahill made a cheeky dart around the Tullamore fringes. He released Davie O Grady who set up Paudie Kilcoyne to touch down under the post. Deccie Bannon added the extras, 20-12 to Bruff. Tullamore again showed their grit and added and converted try on 58 minutes to make it 20-19.
Bruff's last score of the game came on 72 minutes when a dominant Bruff maul was hauled down 30 metres from goal. Again Bannon stepped up and slotted the kick to make it 23-19 to Bruff.
But it was Tullamore who had the last say. With just 3 minutes left on the clock Tullamore were awarded a penalty which they kicked to touch. Bruff defended the maul well but were unable to stop the Tullamore forwards from crossing the white wash. The conversion was missed and the game finished 23-24 to the home team.

Out half Bateman also chipped in with 1 conversion and 2 penalties in the opening 40. Blast From The Past: Munster Senior Cup 2010
On Saturday week the senior team meet Cork Con in the quarter-final of the Munster Senior cup. The last time the clubs met at this stage of the competition was in 2010 when Bruff emerged victorious. Here's a look back at the match report.
Bruff added another scalp to their list this season when they ground their way into the Munster Senior Cup semi-final after a hard game in Kilballyowen.
Defences from both sides took charge right from the off with the play going over and back for the first quarter of an hour before Player Coach Eoin Cahill tackled Munster signing Simon Zebo and broke away in midfield before putting Full back Brendan Deady away with a sweet pass to touch down for First Blood.
Despite strong attacking from both sides, it remained 5-0 and there it was to stay until half-time despite one con touchdown being disallowed and another called back for a foot in touch and Brian Cahill missing one penalty opportunity to stretch the Bruff lead.
Brian Cahill stretched the Bruff lead on 50 minutes when he made up for his earlier conversion miss slotting the 35-yarder to make it a two score lead.
Six minutes later constant infringements at the ruck gave Cahill another opportunity to stretch the lead which he duly took and suddenly the constant Bruff pressure seemed like it was paying off in spades.
Five minutes later Cons finally got on the board after grinding their way from the Bruff 22 to allow Frank Cogan to touch down in the corner, Lane not converting however left them with a lot to do.
On 75 minutes we thought the game was all over when Bruff winger broke clear of the Bruff twenty two and looked like having a clear run to the line only for the play to be called back for a Con Scrum on the twenty two.
Bruff finished strongest again and the strong Con defence spared their blushes inside their twenty two a couple of times before the final whistle blew on 84 minutes to give Bruff their step into the Semi-Final.

Junior 2 League: Waterpark 42 – 10 Cashel
The Waterpark second team picked up their first win of the season in Ballinakill last weekend. The home side produced their best performance with this comprehensive win over Cashel. Waterpark made three changes to their team following last week draw with Damien O'Dwyer and Morgan Pellissier forming a new centre partnership and Ed Quann coming into the back row. The forwards laid the platform for this victory with hooker John Kelly and second row Paul Dempsey to the fore. While in the backs winger Brian O Halloran put in a good performance.
Waterpark tries came from winger Conor McCarthy who crossed for 2, flanker Keith Dothery, out half Geoff Deegan and replacement Kevin Phelan got one each. Deegan had a good day with the boot landing 4 conversions and 3 penalties for a personal tally of 22 points.

East Munster Under 18 League: Cashel 8 – 14 Waterpark
A try from prop Tom Swift in the last play of the game sealed the points in this league game in Cashel on Sunday morning. With this win Waterpark top their section and so secure a home quarter final in the league.
Out-half James Kiersey got the visitors other try and full back Alex Molloy kicked 2 conversions. A lot of work still required from this side if they want to progress further in this competition.
Under 15 Friendly: Clanwilliam 38 – 5 Waterpark
A try from second row John Monaghan was all Waterpark has to show from this visit to Clanwilliam. So plenty of work needed on the training ground to help improve this side but they have a lot of potential which always helps.
Under 13 Friendly: Dungarvan 48 – 26 Waterpark
Waterpark played the Dungarvan under 14s in a friendly fixture last Saturday morning. The game was broken down into 3 twenty minute games. The visitor's tries came from Rory Boland, Alex Cronin, Ely Cullen and Colm Power. Cullen kicked 3 conversions.

Club Assistant Treasurer Needed
Due to a work commitment abroad our current assistant treasurer has had to step down. As a result the position of volunteer assistant treasurer has now become available and Shannon RFC are excepting applications from anyone who may be interested. A background in an accounts environment would be an advantage but not essential. Anyone who may be interested in applying can email their details to secretary@shannonrfc.com
Support Shannon RFC Everytime You Shop at Tesco (Coonagh Roundabout Branch)
Great news! Now every time you shop at Tesco you'll be helping Shannon RFC.
How can you get involved?
Each time you shop, you'll receive a goodwill token which you can use to vote for Shannon RFC to receive fundraising from the Tesco Community Fund.
Every six weeks, money from the Tesco Community Fund will be shared out according to the number of tokens each cause receives. So remember to support your Club on your next shop.
Volunteers Always Needed
All at Shannon RFC would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who helped out at the club in 2013. It is much appreciated.
