Well, we’re off the mark in the AIB and hopefully we’ll continue our winning ways. Although Buccaneers proved very stern opposition it was very important we bounced back from our first round defeat. No one will argue the point that it was far from our best performance and while there certainly are big improvement to be made we can take solace from the fact that on the basis Saturdays performance Buccaneers will take scalps as the league progresses. The beautiful sunny day that greeted the teams unfortunately wasn’t matched with a game of equally beautiful rugby and it was something of a stop start affair. We were boosted by the addition of Mushy and Donnacha Ryan in the team but it took the boot of AIB man of the Match Tadgh Bennett to more or less secure the points. His 20 point haul added to Riche Mullane’s try was enough to edge the game. The late and timely intervention of Stephen Kelly in the closing stages to prevent Buccs from scoring ensured that we would indeed claim the spoils, but with the visitors crossing for three tries to our single effort our defence will have to shore up.
Ross O’Loughlin who was filling in for his injured brother Fiach, started his first ever AIB league game never looked out of his depth while our summer addition Mike Essex returned from injury to take his placed for a first league game.
It was great to get back to Thomond Park for our post match meal and with Ann and Violet at the helm their world renowned stew made a welcome return.
Friday night should be a great occasion when the AIB league lights up Thomond park we host Garryowen with a 7.30 kickoff. We wish to advise anyone attending that access to the pitch will be through the West side only which is our side of the stadium. There will be no access to the East side, but both the stand and the Terrace on the west side will be open.
Looking a week ahead we travel to play Terenure and we hope to run a supporters coach to the game. John Leahy can be contacted on 086-2562730.
Our U/12’s returned from their annual pilgrimage to Ealing which was once again a resounding success. The Blues were very unlucky not to win the ‘A’ competition losing out by a single try in controversial circumstances to the eventual winners Richmond. However, they achieved 3rd place for their efforts defeating London Wasps Academy in the 3rd/4th place play offs which was very pleasing.
The Blacks won the ‘B’ competition without dropping a point and without conceding a try. They not only kept a ‘clean sheet’ throughout the competition but played a great brand of rugby putting the ball through the hands at every opportunity while at the same time putting it up to the larger English packs as only Shannon can do. Great compliments must go to all the coaches and parents for their wonderful efforts in ensuring the success of the trip.
Elsewhere at underage we had an Under 10 team going the whole way to Mullach in West Clare to play against the West Clare Warriors and we got both a tremendous welcome and a victory.
The high light of the weekend at home was the visit of Old Greenwich led by Shannon man Joe Costello and captained by his son Brendan, and whilst our Under 15s were busy getting an 8 all draw out in Newcastle West in the league an under 16 team supplemented by the Under 14s produced an extremely friendly yet well contested match in Coonagh. Great credit due to the referee Brendan McNamara and our coaches Kieran Ryan and Gene Leonard. We had a top class reception produced by Marie and John in Thomond Park which finished off a very enjoyable afternoon.
The U/18’s continued their good form in the league when they recorded another win in the league against St Mary’s by 27 points to 9.
Unusually there are no underage games this weekend.
The Thirds had a friendly against Thomond last Saturday and had a good win while the U/20’s and the seconds travelled to Nenagh for challenge games in preparation for their competitive games this weekend. The U/20’s begin the South Western Conference of the All Ireland league this Saturday when the travel to Cork to take on Sundays Well at 2.30 and on Sunday the seconds take on UL/Bohs in the Munster league in Coonagh with a 4.30 start.
The ladies recorded their first win in the league with a superb display against Tralee.

Youghal v Kinsale – 1st XV – League
Kinsale set the pace against a strong Youghal team holding them 11pts to 5 for most of game. 2 penalties were scored by Jason Murphy and an unconverted try from Peter Murphy all in first half. Youghal got a try which went unconverted and with about 5 mins to go they had a converted try. Kinsale went up from kick off and got a penalty by Jason Murphy to bring the score 14 pts to 12 to Kinsale

Kinsale have a free weekend 19th October.

Kinsale v Bandon- 2nd XV – League
First J3 League match of the season saw Kinsale dominate Bandon in a home game. At half time the home side led 25pts to 3 with tries from Billy Kiely, Joe Lyons (2), James Collins & Dave O’Connell

Bandon opened the second half scoring with a try but this was counteracted by Joe Lyons at no 8 who scored his hatrick and was a very strong runner around the pitch, visible in all facets of play. This was converted by James Lynch. Handling errors on both sides halted a further two or three tries. Ralph Cresswell took a lot of good ball for Kinsale in lineouts and Dave Smith was a strong front row presence and around the park for Kinsale

Kinsale Ladies hold top opposition to a draw
This was a tough battle contested in Kinsale between an experienced Nenagh side and an enthusiastic Kinsale pack. Nenagh kept control of the game for most of the first half as Kinsale tested time after time and held the home side to 12 nil for most of the game. Kinsale soaked up the pressure however and responded with 3 tries by Emma Dunne, Melanie Hunt and Danielle Kiely in the second half to go ahead 15 pts to 12.
With just 2 mins left, Kinsale conceded an easy penalty which Nenagh converted to tie up the points between the top 2 teams in Division 2. Well done to Kinsale Ladies, their fitness levels certainly shone through on the day to give them a well deserved result. Final Score Kinsale 15 Nenagh 15

THOMOND RFC

Last Saturday we travelled to Kilballyowen for our first ever AIL meeting with Bruff. Firstly I would like to commend Bruff on only charging EUR5 to get into the game. You would hope that this attracts the numbers. As for the game itself, we started very poorly just as we had finished the previous week and in truth it looked very ominous after 20 minutes when we trailed 8-0. It could have been worse as Bruff missed 2 penalties and a conversion during this time. When we did eventually start playing it was obvious that the match was there for the taking. We got off the mark on 25 minutes when Declan Cusack kicked a long range penalty and shortly before the break we made it 8-6 through another penalty after concerted pressure. At half time you could sense that the momentum was with us and that the belief was draining from the Bruff players as they really should have been further ahead. We continued to press at the start of the 2nd half and an early Cusack penalty put us ahead for the first time. Cusack was controlling the game and with our lineout functioning well we had a lot more quality possession. However the tighter the game got the more mistakes both teams made. Bruff forced their way ahead with about 15 minutes to go with another penalty. With 8 mins of normal time left we took what most people thought was a decisive lead when after forcing a Bruff mistake, Declan Cusack chipped over the top of the full backs head, won the race to the ball and as he dived for the line the ball popped back for Darragh O’Neill to score his 4th try in 5 matches. The travelling support behind the goal went wild and the conversion made it 16-11. However an old Achilles heel of Thomond came back to haunt us. I have noticed particularly in the last few years, our restarts have been very poor after scoring. We failed to claim this restart and this set up a continuous Bruff attack which resulted in Peter Malone diving over near the posts with less than 2 minutes of normal time left. The conversion put the hosts back in front. Amazingly the ref played less than 2 minutes injury time (there were numerous stoppages) and we were unable to create a score. We now have lost 2 out of 2 and next Saturday’s game at home to unbeaten Malone is a massive one. On the day with had very good performances from Warren Kelly, Henry O’Neill, Declan Cusack, Eddie Fraher and Colin Liston. So the team need all your support this Saturday at 2:30pm in the club for our first home AIL match of the season.

The thirds played Shannon in a friendly on Saturday morning in the club going down 10-5. Despite the result it was a good performance by the team and it allowed everyone in the squad to get a long run in the match and stake a claim in the starting line-up for next Gleeson League versus St.Mary’s on Saturday week. On the day our try was scored by Eoin McNamara after good work on the wing by the ageless Mike Leonard.

On Sunday at Fitzgerald Park we played Old Crescent in the Munster Senior 2nds League Division 2 and emerged victorious 28-16. I know Old Crescent harbour hopes of winning this division but on the day the were outfought by a tigerish Thomond side. Despite a superiority in the scrums the visitors were always playing catch up in this game. Thomond took the lead after 20 mins when Darren Clancy barged over after good work by the forwards. A few minutes later Jonathan Forde kicked a penalty to make it 8-0. In the first half the dominant player was Ian Fitzgerald playing at number 8. It is good to see him recovering from his injury problems. Old Crescent got on the scoreboard with a penalty shortly before half time. Into the second half and Crescent tacked on another penalty to make it 8-6. On 56 minutes we scored our 2nd try. After a good kick to the corner by Niall Sheehan, Old Crescent could only tap back the lineout and scrum half Eoin O’Byrne pounced to score. A brilliant conversion by Forde made it 15-6. We started to play with confidence after this and forced another penalty opportunity for Forde shortly afterwards to make it 18-6. Old Crescent responded with a penalty to make it 18-9. There was now about 10 minutes left. We wrapped up the game with about 8 minutes left when Eoin O’Byrne put in a lovely box kick and Michael O’Halloran won the race to the tryline after a good call from the sideline. Again the conversion was superb 25-9. Crescent did get a consolation score when their powerful scrum forced a penalty try. This was a good win for the lads and coaches Niall Thorne and Pat Deedigan will feel as if things are coming together for them. Not to be giving out again but Sunday’s game really shows the benefit of all 5 subs from Saturday’s game turning up on the Sunday. Well done lads. There were some impressive performances from Ian Fitzgerald, Darren Clancy, Colm Kerley, Wayne Mullaney and Jonathan Forde. Also our annually greyhound night takes place on Saturday November 8th at Limerick Greyhound Track. Buster tickets are available for €10.

Old Crescent RFC

Our First’s played Dublin University (Trinity) in our second AIL Division 2 game of the season in Rosbrien last Saturday, and emerged victors by 19 points to 13. Trinity opened the scoring after five minutes with Crescent conceding a soft try which wasn’t converted. However, we struck back immediately, following an intercepted pass, with winger Aaran O’Carroll scoring in the corner. Brian O’Shea missed the convert but kicked a penalty a few minutes later. Approaching halfway in the first half, the Trinity hooker scored a try which wasn’t converted, putting the visitors ahead for the first time in the game. Brian O’Shea kicked another penalty to put us back in front, and Emmet Dalton put us further ahead with a try just before half time, leaving the half time score Old Crescent 16 Trinity 10.

For the second week in a row, Crescent started the second half level or ahead but failed to press home our advantage. We scored a penalty ten minutes into the second half, kicked by Mark Woods, but did not score again for the remainder of the game. Indeed, when Trinity kicked a penalty to bring them within six points with five minutes to go, Crescent supporters feared we might be about to witness a repeat of last weekend. Thankfully, our defence held firm and Old Crescent won the game 19 points to 13 to collect our first 4 point win in this year’s AIL. Overall, the First’s played well but will need to maintain concentration levels to the end of the game.

Our Second team (J1s) played Thomond RFC away in the League last Sunday, losing 26 to 18, in a game that turned out to be a great spectacle with sides playing committed rugby. The game was notable for the J1 debut of long time club stalwart, James ‘Buff’ Cullinane, and another chapter in the continuing career of the evergreen Gerry Reynolds. Overall, the pack did well, with ‘Mac’ leading from the front, and JP Hartigan guiding his forces well in the backs and kicking three penalties and a conversion. All in all, a great game played on one of Limerick’s great rugby venues, and we look forward to visiting there again soon with our every improving J1 side.

Our Thirds (J2s) played St Mary’s RFC in Rosbrien on Saturday and lost 3 points to nil. Our Under 20’s played Bruff in a practice game and lost by two tries to one.

A draw for our bi-monthly Car Draw was held during our pre match lunch last Saturday, sponsored by Uncle Bucks Ltd, and the lucky car winner was our long time Dublin based supporter, Jim O’Higgins. The lunch was also attended by members of the Crescent College Class of 1970, who were there in support of their classmate, our President, Glenn Quin, and were in Limerick for a class reunion weekend.

Our Under Age section has a quiet Sunday morning in Rosbrien with an away blitz for the U10 ‘s in Coonagh. Our U14’s played a training match in Derryknockane against Young Munster and our U16’s took a day off from training.

There were two league fixtures in Rosbrien on Sunday morning where our U18’s were beaten 32 points to 10 by NCW in their league fixture, while the U15’s finished the pool stage of their league with a 20 point to 0 victory over Ballina/Killaloe.

Our First team play UCC away in Cork in the AIL at 2.30pm next Saturday. Our Seconds and Thirds have no games at present, and our Under 20’s play Clonmel RFC in Clonmel at 2.30pm next Saturday.

In Under Age, next weekend sees both our U8’s and U9’s at away blitz’s in Ballina/Kilaloe and Ennis respectively. The only youth fixture down for consideration is an U18 home league fixture against St. Mary’s which has an 11:30am kick off.

Shannon recorded their first AIB league win of the season on a sunny autumnal day in Coonagh by a slender 25-21 scoreline.
There was an improved performance from their first outing, but leaking three tries to Buccaneers they relied heavily on the boot of AIB man of the match Tadgh Bennett for the bulk of their scores. The outhalf converted 5 penalties 1 conversion and dropped a sweet drop goal.
Buccaneers proved a dogged side and had they not been thwarted by a try saving tackle by Stephen Kelly in the 76th minute, they could well have been heading back to Athlone with the spoils.
Their speedy backs posed the biggest threat to Shannon and they threatened frequently in a game that never really sparkled. Right from the start the game was punctuated with stoppages and 10 kickable penalty attempts, 8 of which were for the home side, and only sporadically burst into life, mainly through Buccaneers back play.
As early as the first minute Bennett was presented with a penalty chance, but it drifted wide and the opening score came from his drop goal in the 14th minute.
Buccs were finding their feet and Alex Guaghen scored two successive penalties in the 21st and 23rd minute to give them the lead after some sloppy defending.
The game was moving along steadily if not spectacularly and neither side looked threatening and it seemed fitting that the opening score would come from a turnover.
Buccaneers struck in the 28th minute when Niall O’Hara linked with Mark Bruce from deep in their own half and the kick and chase beat Shannon’s scramble back and Bruce dived over the line in the corner.
Shannon’s response was quick and decisive and they turned around the 11-3 deficit before the break with Donnacha Ryan instrumental in both his sides’ next two scores. The Munster player took the ball deep into Buccaneers territory and a quick recycle and equally quick hands saw winger Richie Mullane scammer over for a converted try.
Just a few minutes later Ryan forced a penalty in front of the posts which Bennett converted and almost immediately after the break he added another to give Shannon a 5 point lead.
It seemed at this stage that the home side would close out the game but another penalty stroke came off the upright for Bennett before Buccaneers struck for another unconverted try. In the 52nd minute John O’Brien cut a great line from his wing and worryingly for Shannon, not a hand was laid upon him.
It was turning into a real ding dong affair and the outcome hung in the balance throughout the remaining quarter. Bennett added two further penalties from three successive attempts, but Buccaneers’ refused to capitulate and further indecisiveness in Shannon’s defence in the 66th minute saw Simon Rolleston charge over the line for a third try and nervy times began for Shannon.
Had Hayman converted the three tries, Shannon could have found themselves in a bit more trouble and despite Bennett’s fifth successful penalty in the 73rd minute to leave his side with a slim 4 point advantage, Buccaneers always had the ability to strike.
However, Kelly’s timely intervention ensured that Shannon secured their first points of the AIB league.

KILLORGLIN RFC

Killorglin Rugby Club’s fundraising draw continues, with a chance to be part of history as its prize. Tickets cost €10, with the winner receiving a pair of tickets to the MUNSTER v ALL BLACKS game in the newly revamped Thomond Park on Tuesday, November 18th, along with one night’s accommodation in Limerick’s Clarion Hotel, where the Munster team will stay. This may be the official opening of the new Thomond Park and marks the 30th anniversary of Munster’s finest hour, when they beat the All Blacks on 31st October 1978. Tickets for this match are like gold dust, so this may be one of the few chances to get to see the game. Killorglin Rugby Club Seniors travelled the short distance to Castleisland on Saturday night last to play their latest Munster Junior League game. The hosts proved stronger than their visitors in the game running out 28-3 winners, with Killorglin’s points coming from the boot of Brian Gannon. The game was played under floodlights, the first such game Killorglin have played in their history. Some Killorglin players shone, most of all the out-half Luke O’Shea, making his senior team debut after captaining the Club’s Under 18 team to the West Munster League title last season. The Under 16s travelled to Abbeyfeale on Saturday morning last. They drew 13-13 with their hosts with stellar displays coming from their captain Patrick Kilkenny who scored a try, and his vice captain Donagh McGillicuddy, contributing 8 points from his boot. In the forwards, Peter Mullins & Pieter Homan excelled. Everyone on the team played very well, and they were unlucky not to get more from the game. The Under 13s also travelled to Abbeyfeale, but were beaten by their hosts.
Fixtures: – The Senior Team travels to Charleville this Sunday 19th Oct, in the Quarter Final of the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield. Kickoff is at 2:30pm. The Under 18 & under 14 teams travel to Tralee RFC this Saturday 18th Oct, in the next round of their respective leagues.
Senior Team Training continues every Tuesday & Friday at the Killorglin Community College grounds at 7:00pm. New players are most welcome and our coaches are happy to introduce novice players to the game. Killorglin RFC Underage training continues on Saturday next, 20th September. Under 10, 12, 13 & 14 teams will train on the Dragon’s Den All weather pitch at the Intermediate School at 11am. The Under 16 & 18 players will train on the Dragon’s Den at 1pm. CARRICK ON SUIR RFC

As is often the case when these two sides meet, Carrick-on-Suir and Waterford City served up a closely fought battle at Tybroughney last Sunday as the Munster Junior League Division Three (Section B) got underway. And it was the hosts who came out the better side of the 14-11 final score, much to the satisfaction and relief of the hosts. Carrick, who will be anxious to improve on last season’s effort, when a couple of below-par displays in an otherwise positive campaign denied them promotion, needed to get off to a good start. And, thanks to Ross Clery’s at-the-death penalty kick, that they’ve done.
Carrick and City provided the watching support with a nip and tuck battle throughout, with just two points separating the sides at the break (5-3). Dylan Davis, the New Zealand forward who has just begun his second spell in Carrick, touched down for the only try of the first half to give the hosts the edge.
It was of little surprise that the second half proved similarly tight, but when penalty opportunities came Carrick’s way, they were availed of via the boots of James Wallace and Ross Clery. But City didn’t cave in and rallied with a try and conversion of their own to level matters as the game entered its final moments.
Just when it appeared that the visitors’ resolve had ensured a share of the spoils, a late, late penalty award went the way of the Tybroughney boys. And up stepped Clery to kick the match-winning three-pointer to the delight of Carrick and the Kilbarry side’s despair.

A trip to Fermoy on October 26th is next up for Carrick in a league campaign from which much is both hoped and expected.

Clonmel Senior Teams
Clonmel 1st XV won away in Musgrave Park, beating Sunday’s Well 30 – 27 in a friendly. Clonmel Womens’ XV were beaten in Division 1 by UL Bohemians, away, going down 29 – 3. Clonmel 2nd XV beat Kilfeacle 19 – 10 in the Evans League.

Clonmel 1st XV are home to Skibbereen on Sunday, in the Munster Junior League, Division 1, KO 3 pm.

Clonmel U20s are home to Old Crescent on Saturday in the U20s League, KO 2.30 pm.

Mini rugby (U8s, U10 & U12s)
On Saturday, 18th October we are playing away to Clanwilliam in Tipperary Town. We will travel by cars, so parents, please meet at Ardgeeha at 9.30 am, we will depart at 09.45 to arrive in Clanwilliam by 10.30 for games starting at 11am.

Parents & players, please ensure that you return your registration forms fully completed and signed on the reverse side to team coaches or other members of the Youths Committee.

Under Age Rugby Fixtures for Sunday October 19th.
Under 16s and Under 18s both travel to Waterpark. The bus will leave the club at 9 am sharp. Under 14s have no scheduled game this Sunday.

U14 Match report

Nenagh 22 Clonmel 15

Clonmel travelled to Nenagh on Sunday morning to play in the first round of the Cup. With some positional changes across the backline the team started well. Some good rucking and mauling from the big Nenagh pack put Clonmel under pressure and forced an early penalty and Nenagh opted to run at Clonmel. Excellent tackling from David O’Callaghan and Sean Twomey were not enough to stop Nenagh from scoring the opening try, which they went unconverted, 5-0. Clonmel found themselves down another 5 points following some great attacking from the Nenagh backs. The Nenagh second centre beat the Clonmel tackles to touchdown in the corner, 10-0. Clonmel restarted and instantly hit back when the forwards, led by Ethan Mulvee and Kevin McMahon, drove the Nenagh pack back back into their own 5 metre line. A quick break from Paudge Keating was all that was needed to touch down for Clonmel to leave the score 10-5. Ciaran Brady took responsibility for the kicking and was unlucky with a great effort that just went wide from a tight angle.

Following the restart Nenagh got in to extend their lead just before half time after some poor handling errors from the Clonmel forwards, going in 15-5 at half time.

When the second half kicked off Alex Sheehan replaced Stephen Dooley at scrum half and instantly made an impact hitting anything that moved. Clonmel were back on the attack when Conal Guilfoyle was fed quick ball and broke through a sea of red shirts to score for Clonmel, 15-10. Brady was unsuccessful with his kick but was starting to find his range. Following some indiscipline, the referee had two players from the Clonmel pack changed. The Nenagh pack used it to their advantage and got in for their fourth try and added the extra 2 points, leading 22-10. Clonmel dug deep and were rewarded with another score this time Daragh Foley ran from deep to touchdown under the posts. Final score 22-15. Clonmel can take a lot out of this game with good performances from Colin Alyward at full back, Luke Boland and Dylan Cadogan. The team is starting to gel but a lot more work is needed. BRUFF RFC

Senior Squad: This was never going to be a classic example of flashy running rugby. The last time these teams faced off against each other at any serious level was over twenty years ago, after that Thomond joined the ranks of the AIL and Bruff, well you know how we got here by now. This was the first of Two "Limerick Derby" games this season and as Aidan Corr said to me following Thomond’s game in the Cup against Garryowen, the better pack would win on the day, you have to earn a win against Thomond, they don’t come easy, any senior club will tell you.
Bruff’s had two stages where they ruled the roost, the first and last twenty minutes, Thomond took control of the middle period of the game with a stranglehold. Early on the Bruff scrum caused serious problems for the Thomond pack. Out half David Maw was targeted very early on by the Thomond back row and following a very early hand injury which ended up causing him to be blood replaced he missed two very kickable penalties before the 16th. minute first try of the game. Scrum half Joe Lyons took a quick tap penalty and ran in for the opening try but it remained unconverted.
Brian Cahill stretched the lead on 22 minutes a penalty and to be honest at this stage Bruff looked to be heading for the final post but just couldn’t seem to punish Thomond and get points on the board. Thomond however came right back into the game and with two penalties by Declan Cusack one on 25 minutes and another on the stroke of halftime (After two misses), they went into the half time break trailing by a mere 2 points. Bruff’s kicking downfield to the Thomond Full back, Warren Kelly were returned with vengeful incisive running.
At eight minutes into the second half Thomond took the lead for the first time with another Cusack Penalty and at this stage it was backs against the wall for the Bruff side, the defence held however and the score didn’t change until the final quarter. When Bruff Scrum Half Joe Lyons was binned, Davy Maw was finally called ashore and replaced by Player/Coach Eoin Cahill. A missed penalty by Brian Cahill who had taken over the kicking duties and things were starting to look a little hairy. He made amends two minutes later when he slotted over another penalty to give the home side a slender two point lead with ten minutes left on the clock. Peter Malone, Martin O’Rourke and team captain Cathal O’Regan began to take charge and their team-mates responded well to their leadership. But just two minutes after going in front, an intercepted pass led to a chip ahead by Declan Cusack, with Dara O’ Neill winning the chase to the line. Cusack again converted to make the score Thomond 16, Bruff 11 with only 8 minutes left on the clock.
All of a sudden, the Bruff pack sensing the game slipping away, really upped their tempo once more with the more senior squad members taking charge and what followed was five minutes of constant pressure on the Thomond line. The play didn’t move any further than ten metres out and finally after a five meter scrum, Peter Malone touched down to level the score, Brian Cahill adding the extras to go two points ahead. Thomond Centre Brandon Grant was binned two minutes from the whistle and Bruff closed out the game ending up with the full Four points. Thomond had to be satisfied with the losing Bonus. You could say we got out of jail, a bit like Munster in Thomond Park on Friday night, but we had put ourselves there, ground it out as you have to against Thomond and strength of character brought us home. Overall a great day out in the club. This was followed by the first outing of the season for the U20’s against Old Crescent under lights. There are some photos posted up on the website as well.

U12 Blitz in Terenure College: Bruff U12’s were invited to this special blitz tournament in Terenure on Sunday last. Bruff beat Armagh, Ballinasloe & Navan along the way finally going down to their hosts Terenure. Jason Robinson & Brian O’ Driscoll were in attendance, our guys really liked Jason Robinson who spent quite a bit of time with them and came across as a really nice guy. Joe Power captained our side and can be seen in the official photo on the website with all the other captains. Coaches Mike O’Donnell, Pat Maher, Ger McNamara & Martin Gennery travelled. Well done to the lads, they did us proud.

Finally we would like to congratulate the Bruff Hurling team who won their Intermediate County Hurling final last Sunday against Caherline thereby gaining promotion to Senior from next May. Well done to Manager John Mulqueen, Selectors Ger Browne, Jimmy Burke and Paul Finn and to Captain Mike Weekes and the players for their fantastic work which has paid off. As Ger Browne’s text said over the weekend, "We’re All Senior now….."

Kilfeacle’s League journey begins with a loss.

Kilfeacle and District’s league journey started in earnest, on Sunday 12th at 2.30p.m. we were away to Richmond R.F.C. in the first round of the Munster Junior League. These are always lively affairs and we needed to get off to the best start if we were to be in with a chance of winning as it is never easy to visit Richmond looking for a result. Weather conditions were very good for this time of year so this meant that the toss would not be crucial and Kilfeacle found themselves playing into a slight wind for the first half. It was always going to be a game of damage limitations while playing away from home. The plan was to keep the opposition at bay and not allow them to gain a head of steam. The plan failed..
Richmond got off to a great start and were 7 points up after 12 minutes from a well-taken try and conversion, and when 5 minutes later Richmond kicked a penalty the alarm bells were ringing, Kilfeacle needed to shut up shop. This they did despite being pinned in their own half for long spells of the first half Kilfeacle defended resolutely and conceded no more scores. In fact as the half drew to a close Kilfeacle finally began to put some phases together and managed to get on the scoreboard with a well taken penalty. This meant that at half time Richmond led by 10 points to 3 and were disappointed not to be further ahead for the amount of territorial advantage they had enjoyed.
Kilfeacle were optimistic at half time that they could do better however when just minutes into the second half poor handling and mistakes spurned a scoring chance and initiated a counter attack which saw Richmond score 3 more points it signaled that it was not going to be our day. The Kilfeacle heads dropped and shape and discipline was lost this did not seem to be the same team that beat Skibbereen and ran Cashel so close. Richmond, who played well, pounced on any and all mistakes and punished the visitors with a fine display of kicking from their out-half. Richmond drove home their dominance late on when their foe was stretched chasing the game they scored and converted a breakaway try to seal the game with a very healthy scoreline in their favour of 20-3 to Richmond. Richmond were the better team on the day and deserved their win.

Kilfeacle and District R.F.C. 10
On Sunday 12th of October, Kilfeacle and District R.F.C.’s seconds travelled to Clonmel. Although we were beaten we were happy with our performance. The selectors and coaches have decided that any players that turn up for training regularly would get "game time" and this promise was adhered too. Clonmel will happy with the result and in a lively game we can’t begrudge them the victory. Clonmel got off to a good start and bossed the majority of the first half, during which they held Kilfeacle scoreless while amounting an 11 point tally themselves. Kilfeacle rallied in the second half and good play from Michael Fitzgerald, Noel Leahy and Tommy Maher kept us in the game. Young Ryan (Whip) and Andy were doing nicely on the wings. Shane Casey’s strength was noticeable, Liam Burns and Diarmuid Carr are benefiting and improving all the while from more games while Alan Kiely, Davy Stapleton and Keith Kearins can be proud of their games. The team scored 10 points in the second half and looked more impressive as the game went on but we had given Clonmel too much of a head start. Pat Guerin put in another sterling performance and can be proud of his input while Ritchie Hayes and Charles Walsh impressed. Aidan Long is making his mark at scrum half. Overall it is a fantastic achievement for Kilfeacle and District RFC to be able to field over 40 adult players of this quality every weekend. Trainning continues every Tuesday and Friday night at Morrissey Park at 7.30pm. Players please be on the field ready on time and you will get game time. Congratulations to Clonmel and a particular mention to their groundsman Kevin and to the barstaff who sent us home happy even though we had lost.

Kilfeacle under 14’s hosted Fethard in an under 14 cup game on Saturday evening. This was a particularly entertaining game with Kilfeacle holding on grimly to an early lead and coming out eventual winners at 30 point to 21. Hard fought, free flowing and fair are terms used by the spectators to describe this battle and a lot was learned by these youngsters about rugby and themselves. Brian Roche and Oisin O’Meara led from the start and team management would have concerns about other experienced players being more prominent and giving good example. Mistakes were made by both sides but overall this was an impressive display of skill and courage by the boys from the hill. The visitors had a bigger pack but failed to get their backline moving effectively and this is where Kilfeacle had a slight edge. Much work remains to be done on friday nights at 6.30 pm.

On Sunday Last Bandon played host to the reigning league champions Cashel. With a fulltime professional coach, and a rumoured 10 new players to bolster their already championship winning squad it was obvious from the moment they arrived that Cashel are intent on going a step further this year and attaining Senior status. That said the Bandon boys were well prepared welcoming back Pat Prendergast, Kevin Lucey and Richard Milliner following their exit from the football championship a week earlier and they have to be complimented in a agreeing to play when it would have been perfectly understandable if they had chosen to go and cheer on the hurlers in the County Final.

Bandon Started well going 6 nil up trough two penalties from Bryn Canniffe follwing which Cashel responded with a penalty of their own As the Half wore on Bandon continued to exert pressure on the Cashel defence which was excellent marshalled by Pat O’Connor who is Cashel’s AIL winning fullback and although Bandon came close once or twice they failed to breach the opposition line. With halftime approaching Cashel won a turn over in the Bandon half and it was only through the quick thinking of the ever young John O Connell that a certain try was saved. Unfortunately from the resultant lineout Bandon failed to win their own ball and Cashel drove over for a try.

With the sides turning on a halftime score of 6 points to 8 Bandon were still well in the game, however with the concession of an early try and the loss of a man to the bin Bandon found themselves 15pts to 8 down shortly after the interval. The aforementioned Pat O Connor was the star of the second half crossing for two converted tries either side of an unconverted try by the Cashel number 8. Bandon scored a try following an excellent break by Bryn Canniffe with Pat Prendergast touching down and Bryn converting the conversion and an earlier penalty. Bandon finished strongly as they never gave up on the game and even though the score finished 34 pts to 14 Bandon can take a lot of positives from the game with 4 players making their debut at this level namely Reggie Sugrue, Mark O Driscoll, Kevin Brophy and Harry Fleming all of whom were playing u18 rugby last season.

Bandon opened their league campaign with a resounding win away to Highfield. Early pressure by Bandon in the Highfield 22 saw them awarded a couple of kickable penalties, one of which was converted by David Ahern to give Bandon a 3-0 lead. Despite struggling in the lineout, the Bandon pack were well on top and were providing scrum half Connor Desmond with plenty of quality ball. From a ruck in the middle of the field the ball was simply fed through the hands until it reached Dave Hegarty who scorched past his man to go over in the corner. Hegarty added a second try soon after and his fourth in as many games when he came in off his wing to take a pop pass off Dave Ahern to go in under the posts. Ahern converted to make it 15-00. Bandon’s forwards were also picking and going around the fringes to great effect and after they were stopped just short of the line in the right corner, the ball was spun out to the backs and eventually reached centre Mark Kelly who crashed over for a try. Bandon got their fourth try and therefore secured the bonus point on the stroke of half time when Connor Desmond blocked down an attempted clearance by Highfield and kicked the ball on and beat the cover to touch down. At the break it was 25-00 to Bandon.

With the bonus point already secured and no sign of a way back for Highfield, the second half lacked the intensity of the first. Bandon’s lack of discipline, particularly at the ruck where they gave away a number of penalties and also had a man sin-binned are areas they will have to work on. However they still produced some great rugby at times, none more so than for their fifth try when a marvellous ‘show and go’ by David Ahern saw him slide through the Highfield defence and go under the posts. He added the conversion himself to make it 32-00. There was also a superb jinking run by Colm Johnson which saw him beat several defenders but his pass at the end was just out of reach of veteran prop Henry Appelbe who was making a welcome return to the side. Bandon’s sixth and final try came when a series of quick passes saw the ball go to Marios Cornelius who stretched over the line to touch down in the corner to leave the final score at Bandon 37- Highfield 00.

Bandon’s next game is again in the League at home to Dunmanway on the 26th October at 12 o’ clock.

Bandons J3 team opened their league campaign with an unfortunate defeat away to Kinsale. Bandon started brightly, but soon fell behind to two quick Kinsale trys. Bandon fought back well, but conceded another try before half time, to leave the score 15-0 at the break. The half time score didn’t reflect the play, with Bandon rucking and tackling well in the opening period. Bandon fought back well in the second half, and put their first points on the board when No. 8 Declan O’Donovan dived over to give the team a deserved try, and leave the score 15-5. Full Back Andrew Willis then converted a penalty, to reduce the gap to just 7 at 15-8. Unfortunately, Kinsale were awarded a controversial try soon after, when the ball appeared to have been knocked on as the try was scored, and soon followed up with another score to end the game. A committed effort from Bandon, which will hopefully set the tone for the rest of the season.

Clon Let It Slip – AGAIN!

Last Saturday Clon repeated their underperformance of the previous week in letting Greystones off the hook when they seemed to be cruising to a win at 13 – 0 up. The lessons of the Trinity game were not taken on board and another game, which should have been Clon’s, went to the opponents. The result is a building in the pressure as the side face into a crucial clash with Belfast’s Instonians this Saturday at 2.30pm in The Vale. Clon started brightly enough with early shows from Ger Hegarty, great counter-rucking from the pack providing a turnover, a typical Paul Dillon tackle also turning over ball and Gary Cribb through only to be called back by the referee for a forward pass decision. David Lombard put Clon on the scoreboard after ten minutes with a penalty and increased the lead five minutes later with another. A superb bout of open play reminiscent of Clon at their very best saw Derek Dillon enter the line and with trademark aggressive running shrugged off the tackles to score a great try. Lombard’s conversion put Clon 13 – 0 ahead and Greystones looked in trouble.

And they should have been. But Clon, not for the first time this season, missed out in the tackling department when no danger seemed to be present and two trys to Ronan Carroll and Dave McKechnie both converted by James Power put Greystones into a one point lead they were never to relinquish. The second half was scoreless but Clon could have taken the points as Lombard missed three penalties albeit from difficult range and angles and Cribb missed a drop goal also with similar difficulties. However Clon will rue the decision making again as a kickable penalty was run and no drop goal attempt was taken during a particular period of dominance with Greystones defending desperately in front of their posts with less than ten minutes remaining. While Clon could and should have won this game only a superb tackle from Derek Dillon kept the score within winning range at the end and delivered a losing bonus point. Once again the scrum impressed but the lineout was shaky. Clon had improved on their performance from Dublin the previous week even given the fact that the opponents were also tougher but Coach Eugene Murnane was not impressed. "Positives are one thing – and there are always positives if you look for them – but points are what counts in the end and we left them behind". The bonus point keeps Clon out of the relegation zone, which they had occupied last season up to Christmas. A superb revival then had them challenging for play-off places in the end and it is to be hoped that this revival will happen earlier this year and that Clon will find the form that makes them one of the most exciting sides to watch in the AIL when on their game.

This Saturday Instonians will give them a very stern test. Inst are never a poor side and their current position at the bottom of the table should be seen more as an indication of the high standard of the division than any perceived weakness in the northerners. They too will be desperate for points and it promises to be a cracker. The shadow senior side played in The Munster Senior Seconds League on Sunday against Waterpark in The Vale. It was encouraging to see so many senior standard players lining out and indeed was arguably the strongest "seconds" that Clon have fielded in seven years. However there was to be no joy from that quarter either as Waterpark overcame a 12 – 0 deficit to mirror the trend from Saturday and return to Waterford 18 – 12 winners. James Deasy had kicked Clon into an early 12 – 0 lead that looked enough but once again indiscipline was Clon’s downfall and allowed Waterpark the necessary possession to go on and win the game.
