U16s (Notes by Darren Normoyle)

Newcastle West/Estuary – 38 Cashel – 12

Last Sunday morning our U16’s hosted a Cashel side that were on the heels of an impressive victory last weekend whereas, we were without a game for 3 weeks. The first half was a close affair with both sides trying to play the game the way they wanted. Our pack was really getting on top, yet Cashel tried to get width on the ball and exploit the space out wide. We were the first to get on the scoresheet when, after some very impressive carrying from David Walsh, Bobby Donovan touched down under the posts. Andrew Mortell added the conversion to extend our lead. Unfortunately we fell asleep for the kick off and let Cashel straight under the posts. There was some harsh words between the players under the posts and we went right back to dominating physically. With the defence on the back foot and us on the try line, Kevin O’Connell sniped around the side of the ruck and got his try. After the restart we attacked from our 22 and an out of position Jack Corkery broke the line. Once again our pack got us into quality field position. But this time our try came from an unlikely source. Cormac Browne got his first try for the club. Usually a player who sacrifices for other players to get the tries, it was great to see him get his well-deserved score. Once again Andrew added the conversion. Sadly we couldn’t hold on to our lead until half time, when after conceding a turnover Cashel walked under the posts for a handy 7 pointer. This left the score 19-12 in our favour at half time.

We dominated the game from here on out and didn’t give Cashel a sniff on the lead again. The second half started with us winning a penalty and Andrew Mortell kicked us down the pitch. From the following lineout, Sean McMahon made a great half-break. Mike Cremin was on hand for the offload and ran in for a brilliant try. The conversion was successful. Soon after Bobby Donavan crossed for his second try of the game. With the final minutes ticking away, Mike Cremin charged down an attempted clearance kick, regathered and scored to give us a try and an easy conversion. This left the final score 38-12. Our next game is Saturday the 3rd of March away the Old Christians, kick off time TBC.
