Kilfeacle and District R.F.C. win against Galbally

Galbally RFC – 5
Kilfeacle and District RFC – 16

Kilfeacle have been on a great run of form of late winning three out of three league games and collecting maximum points on the way. This means that they should have been confident as they started their defence of their Munster Junior Challenge Cup however with a raft of injuries and withdrawals from the team the club approached this fixture with trepidation. A trip to Galbally for any competitive game is daunting but with a starting 15 that is so vastly changed then it becomes a mountainous task!

In many such encounters with the weather being the way it is, performances can easily deteriorate into mediocrity, priorities change and enthusiasm wane, however this was never going to be the case in this local derby, where emotions often run high. In fact this game suffered because of high emotion and lack of discipline at times and this was to have a huge impact on the game. Kilfeacle won the toss and elected to play against the wind and rain for the first half. A large portion of the first half was played in the visiting side’s 22. Kilfeacle were slowly coming to grips with their opposition and some good play from the forwards, pack and bench consisted of Luke Ashmore, James Ryan Salmon, Tom Doyle, Cormac Ryan, Ger Luby, Kevin Kinnane, Ricky Whitney, Patrick McNamara, Cormac O’Donoghue, Diarmuid O’Donnell and Stephen Quirke meant that Kilfeacle started the better of the two teams and were awarded numerous penalties, which they constantly kicked into the corners in search of tries but they were to meet a resolute and impenetrable Galbally defence. After 16 minutes Kilfeacle and District decided that putting some points on the board and Shane Luby converted the first of three first half penalties the second came in the 24th minute and the third after 39. In the blustery, wet conditions Galbally were struggling and with only moments left in the first half came the first of three yellow cards. To be fair to Galbally all the yellow cards came because of repeated infringements not for any foul or dangerous play. Either side were unable to make any inroads on the scoreboard so the halftime score read 9 points to 0 for the visiting side.

At the start of the second half the travelling supporters were expecting their team to come out all guns blazing. This they tried to do but met a resolute Galbally team who enjoyed one their best spells of the game so far territorially wise. After 10 minutes Galbally were finally able to convert this to a score as their pack after many phases of play scored an unconverted try. Game on! With the score at 5 points to 9 the game entered a lull in which both sides made forays into their opponents 22 but never really threatened. With 10 minutes remaining Kilfeacle and District started to regain the upper hand in the scrum and lineouts. This provided better platforms for the backs including John Bourke, Keith Bourke, Ciaran Lowry, Thomas Cronin, Gavin Heuston, Gavin McCormack, Shane Luby, Conor O’Sullivan and Cathal Donovan started to move the ball well and created chances. Galbally were now under the cosh and as the half wore on became more and more anxious to stop Kilfeacle from scoring. On more than one occasion in the last ten minutes Kilfeacle were camped on the opponents tryline but they were stopped by repeated infringements. Galbally unfortunately paid for this, with two yellow cards and a penalty try in the dying minutes. After the 80 minutes were up and the referees final whistle sounded, Kilfeacle had run out winners by 16 points to 5. This win sets up a home quarter final clash with Kanturk on the 19th of November. The team as ever are looking forward to everyone’s support and are looking forward to putting a good Cup run together!

Kilfeacle and District RFC’s next outing is away against Richmond in the Munster Junior League on the 22nd of October. Richmond will enter this game with the tag of favourites when you take into account their current form, impressive results and home advantage. The team as ever are looking forward to everyone’s support and are looking forward to putting a good Cup run together!

Kilfeacle and District R.F.C. 2nds win against Cashel.

Kilfeacle and District R.F.C. – 28
Cashel  R.F.C. – 19

On Saturday 14th of October Kilfeacle and District RFC seconds, consisting of Brian Lowry, Simon Barry, Mike O’Connell, Thomas Peters, Patrick Kinane, Ronan Hayes, Michael Fitzgerald, Rares Stoica, Patrick Finnan, Richard Donovan, JJ Cooney, Keith Burke, Mark Bourke, John Bourke, Cathal Donovan, Patrick Noonan, Ricky Whitney and Aidan O Connell, welcomed Cashel RFC seconds to Morrissey Park in the Gleeson League. The game was a close affair, however on this day Kilfeacle and District just about shaded it and deserved their win. Kilfeacle were happy with the performance and the result, in a lively game. After the game Eddie Nugent said, “We are happy with the effort and application shown by the squad. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Cashel for a hard fought but sporting match and wish the club the very best in the future. I thought that the team played well as a unit but there is still room for improvement, so a full attendance at training is vital if we are to win our next match. In a couple of weeks”

Kilfeacle and District R.F.C. Under 18s win against Thurles.

Bank of Ireland U18 Conference 2

South Kerry – 10 Newcastle West/Estuary RFC – 32

On Saturday the 14th of October last we headed southwest over the kingdoms borders and into the heart of Kerry to play South Kerry. The Knights of west limerick came to invade the pucks land and take his crown on the rugby field. What was going to be a battle of locked horns and swords no inch was to be given or found wanting on both sides of this ferocious battle. When we arrived at Killorglin the boys were ready to take on south Kerry a speech by our captain and leader Adam Flanagan called the boys to battle it reminded me of that cry by Paul O Connell  that is on you tube goose bumps to say the least. We were receiving the kick off and we won the first ball well with David Massey catching and carrying forward and assisted by Adam Flanagan. We recycled the ball well and a good carry by Ryan White assisted by Cormac Nash. again ball was recycled and was Evan Donovan who broke forward with assistance of Eoin Heffernan and Milan Hopp and Tiernan mason led to quick ball out to the backs by Charlie O Doherty back from his ventures with Munster club Interpro u18s. With quick hands we freed Emmet Wrenn on the wing who side stepped the last defender and went over for our first try. The conversion was missed. There was a very strong breeze across the field. We received the kick off and again through good forward play we worked our way into their twenty two where we received a penalty a quick tap and go with Stephen Lyons tying in two defenders the ball was quickly worked to our other winger Liam Sweeney. He duly side stepped his man to touch down under pressure from his tackle the conversion was successful from Charlies boot. We then allowed the South Kerry boys some time on the ball and they worked a penalty and took a shot at the posts and converted it leaving the score 12 to 3 with 12 minutes left in the first half with replacements been introduced  Michael Murphy and Paudie Flavin replacing Eoin Heffernan and MiIan Hopp. At half time the score remained at 12 to 3. The half time talk was to keep it simple and continue to work hard throughout the field from our coach Vinny O Doherty and also Adam Flanagan ask for the boys to believe in themselves and lift the work rate. At the start of the second half South Kerry received the kick off and started to work their way forward but good rucking by Paudie Flavin the ball got turned over and the forwards picked and went from the ten meter line and finishing in true Munster up the jumper style by Michael Murphy. The try was converted leaving us 19 to 3 in front with ten minutes of the second half played. With a great defensive display by our guys especially jack Kenny and David o Donovan at 12 and 13 keeping South Kerry at bay. They were also formidable going forward always making ground. But a lapse in concentration for a few minutes allowed south Kerry to score again under the posts and convert meant we were in front by 19 to 10. Stephen Lyons playing out half having a good game was leading well the backline and we received a scrum from his kick off. Changes were made with Christopher Walsh replacing Evan Donovan and Oliver Lynch replacing Emmet Wrenn and Killian Collins Replacing Liam Sweeney. we got turned over off the scrum with good tackles from Christopher Walsh and Killian Collins and Oliver Lynch we held South Kerry with our forwards no dominating the break down was important to get back into the South Kerry half. We worked a training ground Try with Daniel Normoyle been released by Charlie o Doherty to race between the defence and side step a number of players from outside the ten meter line and touchdown between the posts the try was converted  we led 26 to 10. Stephen Lyons was replaced by Kieran Carmody who did very well in orchestrating our next penalty from the base of the scrum Charlie slotted the penalty between the posts. This left us 29 to 10 in front. With ten minutes to go David Condon and Alan McGrath replaced Kieran Carmody and Tiernan Mason. Both played well when they came on and we were unlucky not to get another try on the wing through good quick hands. With 3 mins left we received a penalty which the able boot of Charlie slotted. The ref blew for full time shortly after that. The score line flatters us in a way as this was an epic battle as the puck men did lock horns with our gallant knights was not for the faint hearted tackles were top drawer stuff no one lacking fire or intensity well done to the boys of the west. We are at home next weekend to Charleville RFC to continue the quest of these young men to capture the coveted prize of the Bank of Ireland U18 Munster Cup. The squad was as follows: Ryan White, David Massey, Evan Donovan, Milan Hopp, Tiernan Mason, Cormac Nash, Eoghan Heffernan, Adam Flanagan(C), Charlie O’Doherty, Stephen Lyons, Liam Sweeney, Jack Kenny, David O Donovan, Emmet Wrenn, Daniel Normoyle, Kieran Carmody, Alan McGrath, Michael Murphy, Christopher Walsh, David Condon, Killian Collins, Oliver Lynch, Paudie Flavin, William Mcloughlin.

U16s (Notes by coach, Darren Normoyle)

Newcastle West/Estuary – 0 Young Munster – 8

On Sunday morning last our under 16s kicked off the Pan-Munster campaign with a home game against one of the favourites for the competition Young Munster. We had a couple of injuries to content with so numbers were a bit on the light side. Still, we wanted to go out and give a good account of ourselves. We managed to forego our usual slow start and really challenged the opposition. It was a back and forth affair with neither side yielding and as such the half time score was 0-0, although we were unlucky not to have a try when the referee ruled a double movement when we dotted down over the line. About half way through the second half Young Munster scored the first points of the contest with a penalty in front of the posts. We then went out to attack and really push for the win, but the opposition defence was as stingy as expected. Young Munster crossed the line to finish the game on a high note for them and leave the final score 8-0. This was a great performance from the boys who are improving after every training session and every game. Our next outing is against Bruff away in the next round of the Pan-Munster on Sunday. Training this week is on Wednesday and training Friday is called off.
