Club Notes: Midleton RFC Launch Virtual Walking Challenge Fundraiser

This week’s club notes come from Midleton RFC and their upcoming virtual walking challenge ahead of the British and Irish Lions Tour of South Africa.

On July 3rd 2021, the players, coaches, family members and supporters of Midleton RFC will set out on a (virtual) 14,000km journey to support the British & Irish Lions in Johannesburg. Our arrival date will coincide with the 3rd and final test in Johannesburg on August 7th.

The aim is to raise funds to improve the playing and training experience for our hundreds of mini and youth players. Specifically, the installing of floodlights across a dedicated area of the club will enable them to run around, train and play after school in the winter.

The target that we are all working towards is €6,000 and anyone wanting to support the initiative can donate through the GoFundMe page https://gofund.me/bcd713f9

Departing from Midleton Rugby Club on 03rd July 2021, our virtual walk will take us through Wales, England, France, Spain Morocco, Algeria, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Along our virtual journey, we will be ‘stopping’ at local towns, villages and rugby clubs where our mini and youth players will have fascinating first-hand insights from players in those countries about the local rugby history, rugby culture and native animals in those areas.

Our progress will be visible daily on Facebook (@midletonrfc), Instagram (Midleton_Rfc), Twitter (@Midleton_RFC) and the Club Website www.midletonrugby.com.

The beauty of this journey is that absolutely anyone, regardless of age or location, can join us. All they need to do is email midletonrfcfundraising@gmail.com and we’ll organise the rest for them. Together, we’ll cover the distance by using technology that tracks our everyday activity. It doesn’t matter if it’s mowing the lawn, walking your usual circuit or playing in the garden, every step will help make a difference.

To find out more about this unique initiative or to speak with one of our keynote captains please contact Carol O’Leary via email at midletonrfcfundraising@gmail.com
