16th September 2024 By The Editor
Nenagh Ormond officially opened their new facilities at New Ormond Park Saturday September 7th prior to taking on Cork Constitution in the Munster Senior Challenge Cup.
A large crowd and bright autumnal sunshine greeted the opening, with former coach, Munster, Leinster, and Ireland international Trevor Hogan cutting the ribbon alongside club president John Long and IRFU President Declan Madden. Joining these on the day were Muiris Mahon, Hon Sec Munster Branch, Ger Malone, Chair of the Munster Board, Peter Silke, Junior Vice President Munster Branch, Des Kavanagh, IRFU past president, Fiona Steed, Munster Branch, along with a host of local politicians and dignitaries.
A new all-weather playing pitch together with a host of other major improvement works have been recently completed as the club celebrates another significant milestone in its 140 year history.
Nenagh Ormond members and supporters welcomed this impressive investment in the club’s facilities which also includes a new state-of-the-art gym, LED floodlighting and a second all-weather training pitch together with upgraded clubhouse and parking facilities.
The investment was made possible by funds raised from the sale of the club’s former grounds at Tyone, where a new dedicated healthcare facility is currently under construction.
In honour of the occasion, it was decided to play the Senior Challenge Cup tie with Cork Constitution on the new artificial pitch, which is World Rugby approved and similar to the surface installed at Virgin Media Park which has hosted Munster Rugby and Ireland Under 20 Six Nations matches.
In keeping with what was indeed a joyous occasion all round, Nenagh Ormond’s Senior squad delivered a top class performance to beat current AIL Champions Cork Constitution by an impressive scoreline of 31-12.
Happy days at New Ormond Park!
