26th September 2024 By The Editor
The first piece of silverware in Munster was presented on Sunday as Waterpark were crowned Casey Cup champions.
The Casey Cup is a Waterford City cup and is 45 years old.
The original Casey cup was retired back to the Casey family this year as a new cup was presented by Shay Casey, son of Bill, on behalf of the Casey family. This cup will continue to be contested for years to come.
It was a festival of rugby in the sunny south east as the day kicked off with the 3rd/4th place clash between Carrick On Suir RFC and Dungarvan RFC.
Carrick On Suir came out on top on the day with a score-line of 24-16.
But the game of the day was the final clash between home side Waterford City and Waterpark RFC.
It was the away side that clinched the title with a score-line of 13-24.
Waterpark scorers included Jack Coady, Greg Staff, Ben Daly and Mark Hayes with two conversions coming from the boot of Daly.
It was a fantastic day had by all with 92 Waterford men taking part.
Speaking about the day Waterford City PRO Derek White said,
“The Casey Cup finals day was a fantastic opportunity to promote rugby in the east of the province and is a credit to the four clubs, along with Tramore RFC, and the work they have done in recent years to get the game thriving in both the city and county.”
