Senior XV
Nenagh Ormond Senior XV played a friendly game at home against Garryowen last Thursday night. Garryowen started the better of the two sides with an early try to give them a 5 point lead. They soon followed this with a penalty which left the score at 0-8.
Nenagh then settled and began to look more confident, putting together some good phases of play to trouble the Garryowen defence. John Coffey opened the scoring when a mismatch saw him break through the defensive line to touch down. Dan Fogarty added the conversion to leave Nenagh trailing by just one point. Garryowen pushed this out to 4 points with a penalty kick but Nenagh kept pressing and were rewarded for their hard work with another try, again scored by John Coffey. Dan Fogarty slotted the difficult conversion and Nenagh took the lead to leave the half time score at 14-11.
The second half saw the already slippery conditions worsen. Despite this, both sides played some good rugby. Both teams made breaks from time to time but neither side managed to get over the try line. Late in the half, Garryowen took a scrum inside the Nenagh 22 but the defence held firm and when another penalty was awarded, Garryowen opted to kick to leave the final score at 14 all.
This was a good performance from Nenagh ahead of the first competitive game of their season. This Friday night sees them make the short trip to Limerick where they take on Old Crescent in the Limerick Charity Cup. Kick off at 7.45pm.
Nenagh Seconds 19-10 Thurles
Nenagh Ormond Seconds played their first competitive game of the season at home last Sunday against Thurles in the Mansergh Cup. The opening quarter of the match saw Thurles with a lot of possession but they were unable to convert this to points. Nenagh scored during this period against the run of play when a quick pass from Shane O’Callaghan put Jack Donovan into space and he showed great pace to get inside the Thurles 22, offloading the ball to Michael Slattery who scored. Denis Slattery added the extras.
The second try came from a turnover inside Nenagh’s own 22. The ball was flashed wide and Peter O’Leary held the defender well to put Ger O’Gorman clear on the wing. O’Gorman backed himself and beat two defenders on the way to the try line. Thurles came back at Nenagh and held possession well, scoring a penalty to leave the half time score at 12-3.
In the second half Nenagh continued to look the stronger of the two sides and they were rewarded for their hard work with a try from Shane O’Callaghan out wide which Denis Slattery converted. However, Nenagh gave away several penalties in this half which made it difficult for the game to flow and eventually resulted in Thurles scoring in the final minutes. Final score Nenagh 19-10 Thurles.

A visitor to Nenagh Ormond
Finian Qerich from Heidelburg in Germany was on holidays with his family in the Nenagh area recently, and availed of the opportunity to attend the Munster Rugby Summer camp in Nenagh Ormond R.F.C. Heidelberg is one of the main centres of Rugby in Germany and Finian plays for the local club H.R.K., who are the current German champions. Finian’s father, Bernd is also a coach with H.R.K.
Finian made many new friends in Nenagh Ormond and we hope to see him and his family back in Nenagh soon.
