First XV:
On Sunday last, Clonmel RFC welcomed Kilfeacle RFC to contest the second game of the season. On arrival it was evident that the underfoot conditions were immaculate and combined with the lack of rain, facilitated good open rugby. There was a sizeable breeze blowing from the Town end and the away team won the coin toss, and chose to play into to wind for the first half.

Both teams had comprehensive wins on the first week so this was being built up by both clubs to be a good benchmark to judge how much they'd improved from the previous campaign and also how much they'd need to improve for the season ahead. Kilfeacle got off to a bright start and spent the opening encounters inside the oppositions half.

Throughout the day, however, it was the home side's defence that prevailed and were able to relieve any pressure, aided by the breeze, and follow up any turnovers with lengthy clearances. After Kilfeacle failed to capitalize on early pressure, Clonmel got a penalty just inside the opposing half, on the 10 minute mark, which was converted by Conor Cooney.

The home side converted two more penalties in the opening 20 minutes. These were caused by a combination of sustained pressure from the home team, and inexperience at the breakdown from Kilfeacle who were punished for going off their feet numerous times.

Three minutes before half-time, Clonmel received a free kick from a scrum, which they proceeded to take quickly and after a number phases close to the line, they managed to claw over in front of the posts. It was evident that this was a huge score because it undoubtedly influenced the momentum for the remainder of the game.

Up to that, Kilfeacle's defence was strong and it seemed to be frustrating the home side but once that score occurred, the Kilfeacle morale was lowered heading into half-time and it gave the home team a pep in their step.

Despite having the wind in the second half, Kilfeacle knew if they were to have any chance of turning the game around, they would need to score early. This wasn't to be, as 10 minutes into the 2nd half, Cooney converted another penalty into the breeze.

The game ebbed and flowed from there on until Clonmel received a ball from a Kilfeacle 22 drop-out and spread it well to score a try in the corner. Poor defending was evident from Kilfeacle, combined with free flowing rugby from the home team.

The final cherry, on what has to be said was a very good home performance, was a pick-and-go try 2 minutes into injury time. This was converted to leave the final scoreline 31-0.

It wasn't a very good outcome for Kilfeacle, from a game that promised so much, but some positives have to be taken form the day. It may well prove to be a good eye-opener for the team and some strong defensive performances from Michael Shanahan, Diarmuid O'Donnell and JJ Cooney stood out.

The team are at home next week to Kinsale, which will be another tough fixture. Again all support is hugely appreciated.

Under-14:
Kilfeacle's opening league encounter was at home in Morrissey Park versus a big Thurles team. The final score was 27-12 to Kilfeacle. It was evident the home side showed many of the skills they have been picking up on the training pitch.

On the day, all players played very well and notable performances from Bobby Purcell, Jack Moriarty, Adam Crowe, Robbie Byron and Alan Flannery stood out.

A special mention to the younger guys also that joined the squad today, the 3 of them were excellent. Next Sunday at 11 o'clock we face another stern test against Galbally.

Training is on Friday at 7pm as usual. Hope to see you all there.

Munster Junior League Division 1:
Our men's 1st XV were at home to Kilfeacle on Sunday last for the second round of this season's Munster Junior League Division 1.

After the previous weekend's winning start to the league away to Kinsale, the home side were eagerly awaiting this much anticipated encounter with our county neighbours Kilfeacle. On the day Clonmel were the dominant side and secured a comfortable 31-0 win over the visitors.

Three penalties by Conor Cooney in the opening twenty minutes had Clonmel 9-0 up midway through the first half. A converted Alex Sheehan try following superb work by the pack saw the home side go into half-time leading 16-0.

Second half tries by John Gallagher and Stephen Pyke with an additional penalty and conversion by Cooney gave all the points on the day to the home side and the game finished 31-0. Newcastle West, Clonmel and Clonakilty now hold the top three places on the league table after the first two rounds of the league and next Sunday Clonmel travel to Clonakilty for round three. Kick-off in Clonakility is at 2.30pm.

Junior 2 League:
Our men's 2nd XV travelled to Carrick on Suir on Sunday last for their opening game of this season's Junior 2 league and came away with a 21-10 win over the home side. Tries from Brendan Leo and Brendan Lawlor and the remaining points from the boot of David Hoyne secured the win.

Thurles RFC

Munster Junior League, Division 2 – Thurles 8-0 Ennis:
Thurles RFC First XV played their opening home league game against a travelling Ennis side who were full of confidence after their win against Abbeyfeale the week previous. Thurles themselves were coming off the back of a good away win against Waterford City but it was the home side who got off to a shaky start.

With most sides used to playing in sunshine for the past number of weeks, the rain that greeted the players for the first half would have been most unwelcome. Both sides were giving away penalties for failing to keep their feet in the rucks but critically Thurles were doing it within 30 metres of their own line and when the referee awarded the first within kicking distance, aided by a strong breeze, the Ennis place kicker had no problem slotting it over to make it 3-0 to the visitors.

To Thurles' credit their defence was very organised and there was very little getting past, with Joey Kelly, Shane Maloney and Brian Lyons putting in some great hits. The front row, consisting of Ger McCormack, Dave Kelly, Jason O'Mahony and Colm Skehan (pictured in action below) when introduced, gave as good as they got and turned over a lot of possession in the scrum.""

This pressure was telling on the Ennis side, as they went down at every break in play. With the wind against them, Thurles had to play a lot of ball through the hand with Eoghan O'Dwyer and Paddy Phelan making good yards up the field at various stages. Thurles were awarded a penalty 35 metres out, Eoghan O'Dwyer stepped up but even though struck well, the wind held the ball up and dropped short, the resulting clearance from an Ennis player landed into the hands of an oncoming Donna Duggan who managed to beat two players and get the offload to send Conor Cooney over in the corner for an unconverted try, 5-3.

Despite taking the lead, the sloppiness at ruck time continued for Thurles and after consecutive penalties the referee had no choice but to reach for the pocket and send a Thurles player to the bin. The Ennis kicker had no problem in stepping up to knock over another penalty to make it 5-6 just before half time.

The second half kicked off with the wind and rain starting to ease, Thurles received the ball and after a few phases, Nicky Irwin gave the ball to Aidan Dwyer who put snow on it. There was a great line chase up the field which caused the Ennis full back to fumble and gift a scrum to Thurles. The Coman brothers, Peter & John, combined to make more yards off the scrum and now it was the away side who were giving away penalties. O'Dwyer stepped up and slotted over the penalty to give Thurles the lead, 8-6.

From a backs points of view, it was a very frustrating game, forced to live off scraps in attack and nulling any threat in defence when called upon. The opposite was the case for the pack, despite losing another player to a yellow card early in the second half, the front eight were in their element for the last quarter of the game, turning over scrums, line-outs and winning penalties.

Thurles were unable to take advantage on the scoreboard, with the greasy conditions making life difficult from the kicking tee. The outcome was still in the balance as Ennis made one last venture up the field towards the club house but were stopped near half-way, where they were awarded a penalty. Instead of tapping and trying to gain ground, they decided to go for the penalty shot, which landed well short and into the hands of Larry O'Gorman who gladly booted the ball into touch to end the game.

This was another hard-earned but deserved victory for the Thurles men, discipline at the breakdown will have to be improved but there will be more positives than negatives taken out of this game. Next up is Abbeyfeale at home next weekend, keep an eye on Facebook for time and details for the game. Training continues Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm sharp.

The Second XV are now back in full flow also, having played their first League game against Shannon last weekend. New players are always welcome.

Thurles Women's Rugby – Thurles 27-12 Shannon (Friendly):
Pre- Season training is in full swing for Thurles Womens RFC and as part of the focused regime a number of challenge matches have been organised.

Wednesday October 1st saw Thurles play host to Shannon and while the challengers are a Division above Thurles it was hoped that the home side would put in a solid performance.

With fierce competition for places on the starting fifteen for the forthcoming League the players were taking the game very seriously as a way to claim a coveted starting place. It was the opposition that opened scoring with a well executed try which was duly converted to give them a 0 -7 advantage.

Thurles took control of the game from the re-start and were patient as they went through the phases and were rewarded when Joanne Harrison went over the line for the home sides first try of the game. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful and though Shannon held on to a narrow 5 -7 lead it was undoubtedly Thurles that were taking control of the play.

Thurles dominated possession for the remainder of the first half and were unlucky on a number of occasions not to score. Nonetheless, the team were clearly focused and with eight minutes to go before the break Niamh Coman broke through the opposition defense, beating three opponents to score a fantastic try. Miriam Harrison slotted over the conversion with ease and the home side had a 12- 7 lead at half time.

Thurles made a number of changes in the second half and would continue to rotate the panel for the second half proving the strength of their squad. Thurles opened up the scoring in the second half when Rebecca Byrne broke the gain line and offloaded a superb pass to Ciara Dwyer who scored a wonderful try to give Thurles a ten-point lead on a scoreline of 17 -7.

Five minutes later it was the home side that once again went over the line with Niamh Coman scoring her second try of the night. Thurles now had a 22- 7 advantage over Shannon. The visitors were in control from the re-start and although some fantastic tackles were made Thurles were unable to stop them scoring with just minutes left in the game. The score now stood Thurles 22-12 Shannon.

Thurles had been in control of possession for much of the game and had played some fantastic rugby and were unlucky to concede the late try. With minutes left on the clock they contested the re-start with determination. An opportune dropped ball allowed Thurles to re-gain possession and Niamh Coman, one of the undoubted stars of the night, went in for her third try. The game finished 27 -12 in favour of Thurles.

U-18s – Thurles 29-22 Clonmel:
Thurles U-18s had a great win Sunday against Clonmel with a scoreline of 29-22. It was a very good game of rugby with tries from Seamus Telford, Dan Taylor, Cillian Kavanagh, and 2 tries from captain Liam Devaney and conversions from Brandon Shanahan.

There was a stunning man of the match performance from Thurles no. 6 Donogh Moore. Overall it was a great display from all involved as there were a lot of new players on the field for this game. Well done everyone.

U16 Boys – Thurles 19-0 Fethard:
Thurles U-16s traveled to Fethard for a local derby. The game was very stop start with Thurles conceding a lot of penalties at the breakdown. After a lot of pressure applied by the forwards Eoin Kerrane went over for Thurles's first try which they failed to convert. The Thurles U-16 side with their coaches""

The score remained the same well into the second half until Thurles forwards worked their way over the try line and Dylan Mason grounded the ball. The outhalf slotted the ball through the posts to make the score 12-0.

With a minute left Thurles forwards secured the ball from a line out and the ball was passed through the hands and Ciaran Murphy scored in the corner which was also converted by Jack Flanagan. The final score was 19-0. Credit to Fethard who never gave up and made it difficult for Thurles at times.

Girls Youth Rugby:
Both the U15 & U18 Girls teams travelled to Carrick on Suir on Saturday to kick off their respective sevens league campaigns.

This season will see Thurles begin the process of re-building the girls youth rugby teams, with the emphasis on recruitment and participation in as many games as possible.

The U15s were first up on pitch #2 combining with Youghal and Fethard to score 3 fine tries but conceding 6 in the process.

Next up was Shannon RFC where the girls were much better in defence but were on the wrong side of a 10-0 final score.

""The U18 Girls (left) started their day with the first ever meeting of Thurles and Cashel at U18 level. The Thurles girls were severely under strength with many of their regular players missing on the day.

The girls that lined out were very unlucky to lose both games but showed some great skills during what proved to be a hard day at the office with a 27-5 loss to Bantry in the second game.

The Thurles Girls will, no doubt do their best to turn things around in the next round of games at Shannon RFC next weekend

Thurles Mini Rugby:
Thurles hosted a minis blitz Sunday morning with teams travelling from Clonmel and Clanwilliam. There were large numbers and lots of rugby on display from U-7s up to U-12s. Well done to all involved.

Ladies Team:
The Ladies team played last week against St Mary's in a friendly, narrowly losing 15-10. They have come on leaps and bounds since last season, and it's a credit to the amount of work they have put in. Their season kicks off on the 19th of October against St Mary's.

The ladies side of the house seems to be thriving with 23 Bunnies down training on Sunday morning, the numbers are increasing week on week and it's great to see such a high involvement now in the minis. The girls training is on every Sunday and open for all girls aged 6-12 to come down and join in. It's a fun packed hour between 11-12 every Sunday.

Senior XV:
Wanderers walked away last weekend with 5 points against us in the league, in what was a poor day in the Canal.

Losing our first three games of the UBL was not the plan we had in mind at the start of the season, rooted to the bottom of the division we have three weeks off now to recover and evaluate what happened and what needs to be done to progress up the league. Brian Mullins kicked our only penalty of the game on Sat.

Underage:
The U-18s had a friendly on Sunday against Thomond, in their season opener. The game finished early when an ambulance had to be called for an injury to Brian Clancy.

Wishing Brian a speedy recovery and hopefully we will see him back training soon. Well done to everyone else on a good performance, league starting this Sunday against Tralee.

Hard Luck to the U-15s on Sunday morning, losing 24-7 to a strong Bruff team in Corbally.

Good Luck to St. Patrick's GAA:
On Sunday St Patricks GAA will face Ballylanders in the IWP County senior football final. Wishing all the team and management of St Patricks GAA the best of Luck from all in the club.

Halloween Rugby Camp:
Halloween Rugby Camp coming up for the 4 days of the Mid-term. Will post more details in the coming weeks.

If any underage coaches would like their match reports added to the Notes, please let me know and we can get them added on a weekly basis.

Senior XV:
Old Crescent RFC hosted De La Salle Parmerston (DLSP) FC in Rosbrien last Saturday in our second home AIL game of the season. The season had began disappointingly for the club with losses in the two opening AIL games against City of Armagh and Highfield, and the Crescent senior squad and team management were determined to stop the rot with a home win.

DLSP, captained by former Old Crescent player, Maghnus Collins, were first on the scoreboard with a converted penalty after 12 minutes, but this was quickly replied to by Crescent with a successful penalty attempt by Shane O'Brien a few minutes later.

Crescent were on the attack again, midway through the first half, and a clever kick into touch behind the DLSP back line pinned them into their own corner. The visitors won their own line out but they fluffed the attempted break out by knocking on into the hands of Larry Hanly who outpaced the cover to touch down in the other DLSP corner. The attempted touch line conversion was missed.

Shortly afterwards DLSP got back in touch with a converted penalty but Crescent restored their winning margin with a second converted penalty kicked by Shane O'Brien. With a few minutes of injury time being played at the end of the first half, Crescent launched a final attack. The ball went through a number of hands before Padraig Quinn burst through DLSP tackles to score a superb try out wide. The conversion was missed and the half-time whistle sounded with Old Crescent in front by a thoroughly deserved 19 points to 6 margin.

Crescent continued where they left off and were soon pressing deep into the DLSP half. After a series of forward attacks close to the DLSP line, captain for the day, Cathal O'Reilly, crashed over for a third try for Old Crescent. The conversion was missed but Crescent now led by 24 point to 6, and a half an hour of play remained in which to secure a bonus point fourth try.

A few minutes after scoring his try, Cathal undid his good work by being sent to the bin for ten minutes, and

""

DLSP used their numerical advantage to score an unconverted try while Cathal was off the field. However, Cathal made up for his indiscretion as soon as he returned to the play by scoring a second try after great work close to the DLSP line by the Old Crescent pack. Shane O'Brien kicked the conversion and Crescent kept
DLSP in check until the final whistle to win by the emphatic margin of 31 points to 11.

Overall, it was a superb display by the Old Crescent senior team who put the opening two defeats behind them and got their AIL campaign back on track with a bonus point win. Prop Sean McGee (pictured right with Club President Dr. Michael O'Flynn) was the deserving winner of the Old Crescent Man of the Match Award, which is sponsored by Camden Square in the Crescent Shopping Centre.

Thirds:
Our Thirds opened their Gleeson League campaign last Friday evening in Rosbrien with a comprehensive win over Galbally RFC by 46 points to 23. Our A team were not so lucky when they were well beaten by Shannon in Coonagh last Sunday.

Upcoming fixtures:
After a hectic schedule for all four of our senior teams over the last few weeks, next weekend is relatively quiet with just our Thirds in action when they take on Richmond at 2.30pm next Saturday at home in Rosbrien in a Gleeson League clash.

Waterpark RFC

Munster Junior League: Newcastle West 37-20 Waterpark
Waterpark made the long and fruitless journey to Newcastle West in the second round of the Munster Junior league Division One.

The home side took an early lead when some poor defence for the visitors led to a try. Newcastle continues to punish weak Waterpark defence and ended the first half with a health lead of 22 points to 6.
""
The visitors' points coming from the boot of centre Kieran Butler (left). At this stage Waterpark regrouped at the break and put in a better second half performance with tries from wing forward Dave O'Donoghue after a number of pick and drives and second row Darragh Joyce found a lot of space for the visitors second try of the game.

Again Butler converted both.

The final try count was 6 tries to 2 in favour of the home side. Some positives from the game were again a strong set-piece and to score 20 points is usually enough to win most games but this was outweighed by naive defending.

Next Sunday, Waterpark will face St Senan's at Home.

Junior 2 Friendly: Wexford 14-24 Waterpark
In their first game of the season, the 2nds came away with the spoils in this friendly fixture in Wexford on Sunday.

Waterpark scored 4 tries in total with the tries coming from No 8 Dave Lattimer, second row Keith Doherty and out-half Ritchie Halley. Halley also landed 2 conversions. Next week this side begin their league campaign with a home fixture to local rivals Waterford City.

Under 16 Friendly: Waterpark 22-26 Young Munster
In what turned out to be a very competitive fixture in Ballinakill last Sunday, Young Munster edged out Waterpark with a try in the last minute to take the victory.

The home side found themselves down 21-3 at the break having played into the wind. A half in which the first up tackling left a lot to be desired from the Waterpark side. Glen Kavanagh kicked his side's only points of the opening half.

Strong words at the break led to a marked improvement in the second half and tries from Harry Donnelly and Alex Deegan one which was converted by Kavanagh took the score to 21- 15 in favour of Young Munster.

Waterpark finally took the lead with a try from Kavanagh but the visitors were not to be denied with a try in the final minutes after some excellent phase play from both their backs and forwards.

What a positive weekend of rugby for the club last week with all Shannon RFC teams who played winning all of their matches.

A superb away bonus try win for the Seniors against Corinthians earned some much needed points. The thirds putting on a great display and beating their opponents by 72-10 and our seconds who played last Sunday, showed some great display of rugby also by beating Old Crescent 30-0 in Coonagh.

Well done to all involved with all teams. A special mention to Mr O'Shea (father of Niall and Billy) who attended the match in Galway last weekend. It was great to see him back on the sidelines cheering the senior team on as only he can!!

Thought Of The Week:
"Successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past successes rather than their past failures, and on the next action steps they need to take to get them closer to the fulfilment of their goals rather than all the other distractions that life presents to them"
