Clonmel RFC

Ireland v New Zealand.

The big focus for many people last weekend was the encounter in the Aviva Stadium with the All Blacks in town trying to maintain their unbroken record this season and finish the year with a record unbeaten season of 14 wins from 14. For Ireland it was an effort to restore pride in the green jersey and a bounce back after the poor performance and defeat at the hands of Australia the previous week. What transpired was a game of epic proportions and one that will be remembered for a very long time. Ireland lost out on a history making win in the 82minute of the game to go down 24-22 to a New Zealand side who showed why the hold the position in world rugby that they do. Ireland can be justifiably proud of the performance they put in last Sunday and we now eagerly await the upcoming six nation's competition with renewed enthusiasm and a great sense of anticipation. Well done Ireland.

Munster Junior League Division 1

Following an away win the previous weekend over Cobh Pirates there was no action in the Munster Junior League Division 1 last Sunday. Clonmel currently sits in 4th place and faces a home game against Tralee this coming Sunday at 2.30pm.

Munster Junior 2 League:
The Clonmel 2nd XV took on Waterford City at home on Saturday evening last in the latest round of the Munster Junior 2 league. As he did in the previous encounter against Dungarvan ,Darren Cass opened proceedings with an early try following a great run down the line. Further tries from Cormac Rea, Darren Cass and Christopher Brown followed during the 80minutes with Dylan Cadogan and Christopher Brown combining to slot over the five conversions . The final score of 35-12 maintains Clonmel's top of the league position.

Women's Munster League Group A:

Sunday last saw Clonmel Ladies play host to rivals Dungarvan. On a cold afternoon, a diminished Clonmel side lined opposite their opponents. Clonmel were under immediate pressure with Dungarvan hitting the line with all they had. It wasn't long before Dungarvan went 10-0 up. Due to a head injury and no available subs on the day,Clonmel played ahead a player short. It was during this period that the Clonmel ladies dug deep and lifted their game in response. After numerous waves of attack and of being stopped short, Lisa Corcoran made a fine dash for the line and showed her speed which was no match for the visitors. Half time came, 10-5 to the visitors.
Clonmel ran back out on the pitch with numerous girls leaving their injuries aside and pulled through to show their true grit and determination. There was dogged defence from both sides and both teams seemed evenly matched for a long spell. A yellow card saw Clonmel short a player again and despite Catherine Hogan using her body to hold up the ball, the ref awarded Dungarvan their third try which they duly converted.

Clonmel never dropped their heads and kept fighting but the lack of subs and a lot of injured bodies allowed Dungarvan slip in for their fourth try. Final score 22-5 which didn't truly reflect the game.

Clonmel rugby club would like to wish Leah Coyne all the luck in the world as she leaves us to embark on a new career in Kent. A long serving member of both the underage and ladies teams, she will be sorely missed both on and off the pitch!
We would also like to say a huge congrats to Ameeleigh Murphy Crowe who played with Munster at the weekend. We hope to see her alongside Niamh Briggs when Munster take on Ulster in Clonmel on December 8th during the InterPros.

Clonmel ladies badly need a few new recruits. Players of all ages and abilities are more than welcome to come up to open training every Friday night at 7.30pm. Check Facebook or website for contact details.

East Munster U18 League:

The U18s were beaten 7-8 at home last Friday to Galbally.

U14s.
With no league game tshi weekend, the U14s played Dungarvan at home on Saturday morning last and lost out narrowly 28-32 in what was a great game.

Munster Interprovincial:
The Munster Women play Ulster in the Interprovincial series in Clonmel on December 8th .Kick of is at 1.00pm

The 1st XV are at home to Tralee on Sunday December 1st in the next round of the Munster Junior League. Kick-off at 2.30pm

Midleton RFC

Midleton 17 Richmond 11

Another crisp and sunny day at Townspark as Midleton host Richmond in the first of a three match run in the coming weeks. After a minutes silence as a mark of respect on the passing of the father of our out-half Christian Walker Midleton start the game. The opening few minutes see both teams testing each others defences and the first mistake of the day sees a knock on from Midleton for a Richmond scrum just inside their own half. A good clearance kick from Richmond sees play down to the Midleton half. The error count starts to rise and Midleton give another penalty inside their own half taking play down to the Midleton 22 with 10 minutes played.

Midleton win the line out but a penalty results, this time Richmond attempt a kick to take the points, its about 5m inside the halfway line but straight in front of the posts. The kick is wide to the left, however within two minutes Richmond again have a penalty opportunity from about the same point – this one also wide. On the restart Midleton win a penalty and a good kick from Geoff sees a lineout inside the Richmond 22. Driving maul and a good attack of the back of it sees Jim Mackassy over for a try, with the conversion its Midleton 7 Richmond 0 with about 22 minutes played. Richmond restart and another Midleton error sees a penalty. Midleton defend well and win a scrum
Play continues and up comes Midleton hooker Dave Lee with a great driving run pushing into the Richmond half, the ball is gathered and kicked and chased down field. Richmond defence is put under pressure and forced into touch with the ball. Midleton attack again and win a penalty. Geoff has a go for points but its wide. Richmond restart and edge towards the Midleton's half again, winning a penalty and that they decide to kick to the line. The ball falls short and Midleton look to run the ball, a forward pass sees a scrum and an error in the scrum sees a penalty, this time Richmond replacement kicker puts it over for their first points of the afternoon – Midleton 07 Richmond 03.

On the Restart the Midleton kick does not go the required distance and it's a scrum on halfway. The Richmond scrum is proving to be very good this afternoon and Midleton are finding it hard to handle the Richmond pack. Richmond attack again, however a great turnover and a run forward by Diarmuid O'Sullivan sees play all the way inside the Richmond 22. Midleton take the ball back out and get it wide to Geoff who makes a great run and is over for the try. The score at halftime is Midleton 14 Richmond 03.
Richmond get play underway in the second half and are up quickly. A Midleton attempt at clearance is blocked down, however then Richmond knock on. Centre Jayde Cruickshank puts in a great to get play back up to half way but a forward pass sees a scrum to Richmond. Midleton hit hard and win the ball, and mount an attack. Some great play sees a penalty to Midleton and the score is now Midleton 17 Richmond 3.
The game now moves into a frustrating period for both sides with a high error count resulting in penalty's and yellow cards. Midleton are down to 14 and Richmond try to take advantage attacking up the middle and reaching close to the Midleton line. Midleton defend hard but land a second yellow now its 13 versus 15 with Richmond close to the Midleton line, and the inevitable happens to see Richmond score their first try. The Conversion is missed so it's Midleton 17 Richmond 8 with about 20 minutes remaining. Tense time now as Midleton defend their lead with every ounce of passion they have. Soon its Richmond's turn to earn the disapproval of the referee and a yellow card sees them down to 14.

Midleton are defending hard however repeated infringements and penalty awards on both sides see Richmond with a chance to close the gap and its soon Midleton 17 Richmond 11.

Midleton spend a lot of the second half at a numerical disadvantage but really do defend their lines well frustrating the visitor's attempts to score as they are camped out in the Midleton half. Richmond are pushing hard, then in the last play of the game attempt a chip over the top and the try line to and look to chase and ground the ball for a win but Midleton manage to ground it and the referee blows the whistle for full time.

The first half saw a lot of play inside the Midleton half but the Midleton defence was very strong meaning that Richmond had nothing to show for their efforts, on the other hand the few journeys that Midleton had into the Richmond half were rewarded with points on the board. The second half was all about defence and again the Midleton men showed their determination and resolve to hold on and defend their lead to grind out another win at home.

The players dedicated this win to their teammate Christian and his family following the untimely passing of his father. Our thoughts and sympathies are with him and his family at this time.

Other news
The U11 minis hosted Cork Con and Ballincollig, everyone had a good time and the weather was great. The Under 10's played an exhibition game ahead of the senior match then lined out to give them a guard of honour.
In the youths, our U14 were successful again with a win against Charleville however the U16's went down to Muskerry.

Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne News:

The last few weeks have once again been very busy for Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne. The girls from Coláiste Íde have done it again, Hannah Collins, Neasa McKenna and Sorcha Holohan all lined out for the Munster u18's last weekend.
The girls beat Ulster and narrowly lost to Leinster. This is another huge honour for the Girls, the club and their school. Amanda Greensmith-Martin visited the girls last Wednesday and ran a coaching clinic supported by club coaches Adam Daly, John Devan, Chris Ferriter and Gavan Curran.

They focused on Kicking, Backline Attack, Breakdown and The Scrum. Head coach Dano O'Keeffe was delighted with the session which saw 25 girls from 1st to 6th year get some great coaching. Well done to all involved.

Unfortunately the Seniors have had games called off against Listowel and Tralee, the lads are very frustrated but are still training hard every Thursday and doing extra gym sessions every week. Hopefully they will get a good run of games after Christmas and bring some more silverware to the club. Next Saturday sees the seniors away to Tralee. Kick off at 2.30. All support would be greatly appreciated.
The under 16's have been very unlucky in recent games going down 27-34 to Killorglin in a brilliant game and 13-12 to Castleisland last weekend. The u14's came out the wrong end of a 47-22 defeat to Tralee last weekend, but after a tough training session the lads managed to turn things around and beat Listowel 19-17 in Listowel this Saturday. The lads defended like their lives depended on it and showed great heart and determination. Coach Mike Davis deserves great credit for all his hard work throughout the season.
The Mini Section is the strongest it has ever been in the club with well over 50 kids at u8 u10 and u12's. They travel to Castleisland next Saturday for a Blitz for what promises to be a great day.

Well a very narrow loss in Terenure last Saturday. We played extremely well but it just was not our day. Our Seniors play Belfast Harlequins in AIL action this Saturday in Thomond Park at 2.30pm. We would urge everyone to come along and support the lads as it promises to be a great encounter.

This game was played in perfect conditions last Friday night in Clonmel and it was Waterford who struck first with a try from hooker Stephen O Rourke off a rolling maul.
This game was to be played at a fast pace throughout and Clonmel showed their intentions when they launched 2 attacks into the City half and only for stout defence Clonmel would have crossed for their opening score.
On 25mins Clonmel did find their way through and a converted try by their winger put them 7-5 ahead. Twice more in this half the Clonmel backs found gaps in City's defence and they crossed the line to bring the score to 21-5 at half time.
At the restart City fired back and good work by the forward's saw Stephen O Rourke cross for his 2nd try of them game which was converted to bring the score to 21-12.
Outhalf Sean Stafford made a super break 5mins later but was tackled just a few meters short of the line and the chance was lost after a knock on 2 phases later. Whereas the larger City forwards were on top of their opposition, the impressive young Clonmel backline kept finding holes and missed tackles from City cost them dearly as Clonmel added 2 more converted tries to leave the final score 35-12 to Clonmel. Tough on City as the work rate couldn't be faulted by each player, in particular Davey Whelan who covered every blade of grass but this was a harsh lesson on how to be clinical and the importance of a strong defence.
