Club Rugby Round-Up

Young Munster bounced back after last week’s defeat in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League with a great second half comeback at Clifford Park to beat UCD, while both Cork Constitution and Dolphin are still looking for their first win.

At Clifford Park Young Munster trailed 16-8 to UCD with a try by Barry Gibbons and a drop goal from Willie Staunton.

Staunton reduced the deficit to five points with a penalty early in the second half. Dan Goggin scored a try which Staunton converted and two penalties by David O’Mahony saw Munster claim the spoils 24-19.

There was no joy for the two Cork sides. Dolphin raced into an early 13-0 lead at home to Clontarf with a try from Eamon Mills and a conversion and two penalties by Rory Scannell.

Clontarf hit back with tries from Robert McGrath and David Joyce with Joyce converting his try to leave it 13-12 at the interval. Joyce put Clontarf ahead with a penalty on 52 minutes and then crossed for his second try which he also converted minutes later for a 22-13 lead.

Five minutes from time Scannell kicked a penalty to secure a losing bonus point for Dolphin.

Cork Constitution lost at home to Lansdowne when Scott Deasy kicked an injury time penalty for a 16-13 victory. The visitors led 13-3 at half time with Gerry Hurley kicking a penalty for the home side. The visitors held this lead until twelve minutes from time when tries from Niall Kenneally and James Murphy brought the home side level, until Deasy’s late strike.

At Thomond Park a late rally by Shannon was not enough to prevent Galwegians from taking maximum points from their two opening games in Division 1B as the Connacht side won 29-25.

Two penalties from Tadgh Bennett had Shannon trailing 14-6 at the interval. Two tries from Conor Cunnane and one by Rory O’Donnell, two of which Bennett converted were Shannon's scorers in the second half.

After last week’s local derby win over Shannon, Garryowen were defeated 25-22 at Dubarry Park by Buccaneers. A Jamie Gavin penalty saw Garryowen trail 18-3 at half time.

James Frawley scored two tries for Garryowen and Barry O’Mahony got one with Gavin kicking two conversions.

UL Bohemian defeated Trinity 16-13 at Sydney Parade with a try from David Johnston and Shane Airey kicked a conversion and three penalties.

Nenagh Ormond made a great start to their campaign in Division 2A with a 17-8 away win over Dungannon.

Newly promoted Thomond recorded a 32-20 win over Queen’s University at Liam Fitzgerald Park

However the other Munster sides in this Division were defeated with Cashel losing 38-28 away to Banbridge and UCC lost 29-6 to Naas at Fournaughts.

In Division 2B, two of the relegated clubs Bruff and Highfield met at Kilballyowen Park and shared the spoils in an 18-18 draw.
.
Sunday’s Well travelled to Dublin and a ninth minute injury time penalty for Wanderers saw them earn a 30-30 draw.

Newcomers to AIL rugby Kanturk lost away to Navan 27-25 and Old Crescent were surprisingly beaten at home by City of Armagh 13-7.
