A great second half comeback by Cork Constitution was not enough to see them end Dublin’s recent dominance of the Ulster Bank League as Clontarf ran out 28-25 winners at the Aviva Stadium to win the Division 1A title.
A blistering ten minute spell just before half time saw Clonmel score three converted tries to lead 21-3 at the interval.
Matt D’Arcy, Joey Carbery and Tony Daly scored tries for Clontarf with Carbery converting all three.
Tomas Quinlan kicked a penalty for Constitution between Clontarf’s second and third try.
Four minutes into the second half Brian Hayes won a lineout for Con’ on the Clontarf 22 and they mauled the ball to the line with Max Abbott touching down and Quinlan converted.
Quinlan added a penalty to make it 21-13 but Clontarf hit back with a great try from winger Mick McGrath which Carbery converted.
Back came Con’ with Rob Jermyn scoring a try but Quinlan’s conversion came back of the post to leave it 28-18 after fifty four minutes.
Carbery saw a penalty effort hit the posts and Con’ quickly swept down field with a delightful chip by Ryan Foley saw Darren Sweetnam race up to catch the kick and score. Quinlan converted to leave three points between the sides.
In an exciting finish neither side could add to their tally and Clontarf held out for victory.
