The Munster Rugby Development Department recently held a number of courses for coaches of mini, age-grade and adult players across the province.

Newcastlewest RFC hosted a stage 1 coaching course for coaches of mini rugby (5-12 years-old) where players are introduced to rugby for the first time and participate in games of reduced numbers (8s, 10s and 12-a-side).

The course focused on the safety and enjoyment of players with the coach acting as a ‘guide’ in a player-centred process.

Over 20 stage 1 coaches from the host club, Newcastlewest, as well as Estuary RFC and Charleville & District RFC attended.

Newcastlewest’s Director of Youth and Mini Rugby, Vincent O’Doherty, and Youth Officer, Mark Dowling, facilitated with Munster Rugby Development Officers, Euan Gee, Gerry Casey and Fiach O’Loughlin on hand throughout.

Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne RFC hosted a stage 1 coaching workshop to review the rules and regulations associated with the different levels of mini rugby and to explore effective player development through a game-sense coaching approach.

An outdoor practical with the U12 Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne squad formed the basis of the workshop with Munster Rugby Development Officer, Gee, Participation Programme Co-ordinator, Ray Gadsden, and RCD Youth Officer, Paddy Fenton, co-ordinating the event.

Killorglin RFC held a stage 2 & 3 coaching workshop with over 50 players from the Kerry club’s age-grade section involved in practical demonstrations.

The workshop was a continuation of the four cornerstone series with Killorglin’s U14 squad focusing on catch / pass and ball-carry, while the U16 and U18 squads concentrated on breakdown and defence.

Garryowen FC and Irish Independent Park hosted workshops for stage 2, 3 and 4 coaches.

Activities and games for coaches to use when implementing the four cornerstones of the Rugby Development Programme were demonstrated with access to further resources (session plans & videos) made available.
