3rd March 2020 By The Editor
The Munster Rugby Development Department have continued to roll out Regional Cornerstone Workshops for mini rugby coaches.
Skibbereen and Highfield RFC recently hosted workshops with U8, U10 and U11 teams in each club providing their services and over 80 coaches attending across the two events.
The workshops were facilitated by Rugby Development Officer Eugene McCarthy, Women’s Development Officer Willie Schubert, and Club Community Rugby Officers Emmet O’Callaghan, Matt McGrath and Mark O’Connell.
Mini coordinators from Skibbereen and Highfield RFC hosted Munster Rugby staff and all travelling coaches.
The Munster Rugby Development Department are continuing with their delivery of workshops across the province focusing on the ‘Cornerstones Programme.’
The programme supports coach knowledge on the key skills of the game and delivers on the coaching process of implementation, mainly through games.
The workshops are proving very successful across all stages of development with the emphasis being placed on the coaching ‘how’ as well as the ‘what’.
Coach and Player Development Manager, Keith Murphy, said: “We have delivered over 60 workshops this season focusing on the cornerstones programme, within clubs and schools.
“Our main strategy is to support coaches on how to coach the cornerstones through a game-centred philosophy, facilitating the core skills of catch/pass, tackle, breakdown and ball carrying skills.
“We have promoted the programme to coaches of the 15 a-side game through hard copy and online resources with videos developed to compliment the integration of the skills through games.
“The biggest challenge for all coaches is to coach through the game (includes small-sided games), which is an area our development officers are really emphasising through these workshops.”
The Development Department continue to resource workshops within the province and if you have any queries, please contact your designated Rugby Development Officer (RDO) or Coach and Player Development Officer (CPDO).
