Coaching Workshops In Thurles RFC

The Munster Rugby Development Department recently ran Stage 1 and Stage 2 coaching workshops in Thurles RFC.

Munster Community Rugby Officers Andy Brace and Euan Gee ran the course with a combined total of 22 Thurles RFC coaches and students from Setanta College attending the respective workshops.

18 of the club’s U-11 players participated in the Stage 1 workshop which focused on the two general movement groups for mini rugby; players on the ball and players in the space. Sample fun games were then shown to coaches through the reduced drills that worked on the skills relating to these two groups that may have broken down in the game. An introduction to physical literacy was also delivered illustrating the importance of including this in a session.

23 players from the Thurles U-16 side participated in the Stage 2 workshop. The focus of this session was continuity in contact. Conditioned games were shown looking at the linear and lateral support options to gain continuity. This was then broken down in the reduced drill looking at before, during and after the tackle and what a player's role is in each.

Special thanks to Seán Flanagan of Thurles RFC for helping organise this session and to Thurles RFC for the use of their facilities on the night.

If your club or school is interested in participating in a Munster Rugby coaching workshop, please email info@munsterrugby.ie.
