Cup Action Dominates The Junior Scene This Weekend

There are eleven games in the Munster Junior Cup this weekend as well as games in the Plate and Bowl.

One of the big games of the weekend is the meeting of Youghal and Cork Constitution in the third round of the Munster Junior Cup at the East Cork venue.

Youghal have gone through a torrid time recently after reaching the dizzy heights in 2006 when they won the Junior League title and Junior Clubs Challenge Cup as well as reaching the in augural All Ireland Junior Cup. Since than they have been relegated to Division Two and this year were propping up the table and looking at Third Division rugby next season.

However in recent weeks they have put a run together that has seen them on the verge of the promotion race. Cork Constitution are always one of the favourites for this competition are always one of the teams that clubs like to beat.

They have not been as successful as usual in the Seconds League and the lack of games in recent weeks because of the weather will not help them. The Temple Hill always love a challenge and will treat Youghal with the respect they deserve and their experience should see them advance to a meeting with Richmond next week.

An other senior club side facing an away tricky tie are Dolphin who head to Newcastle West. This will be a big game for the West Limerick side and if they play to their potential they could cause a shock.

There are two games in the fourth round with the meeting of U.C.C. and Young Munster at the Mardyke being the highlight. The students were hard pressed to beat Clonmel in the last round while Young Munster had an easy win at home to Ballincollig. The Limerick side reached the decider last year and could go a long way in this year’s competition.

The other Fourth round tie sees Cashel at home to St. Mary’s and it is difficult to see the Saints inflicting a first defeat of the season against the Tipperary outfit, although Mary’s did surprise Old Christians in the last round.

Bruff and Shannon will do battle under the Kilballyowen Park lights on Monday night and Shannon may again be looking to their expert goal kicker Ben Sargent to see them through.

Garryowen travel to Clonakilty confident that they can book a home tie against Thurles next week I the fourth round. Clonakilty with wins over Old Crescent and Sunday’s Well will not be beaten easily but the odds must be on an away win.

Old rivals Kilfeacle and Clanwilliam could be facing each other next week but first both must overcome Third Division opposition this weekend.

Kilfeacle are at home to Scariff and the Clare side are going well in the league and look likely to gain promotion. Kilfeacle will be seeking a good run in this competition and with the added bonus of a local derby next week they should advance.

Clanwilliam are away to Fermoy and they will also be confident of booking a fourth round place. Fermoy had to battle hard for their win over Dungarvan last week but are unlikely to cause an upset.

Unbeaten Galbally travel to Highfield and such is their form at the moment they could end the Woodleigh Park side’s interest in the Cup.

Tralee open their campaign with a home tie against Midleton and with no other major silverware to play for this season, the Kerry side should advance.

The other tie sees Skibbereen at home to Kinsale. The visitors have been very inconsistent this season and home advantage should see Skibbereen advance.

There are five games in the Munster Junior Plate Bandon and Muskerry meet at Old Chapel and with both sides struggling at the foot of the Second Division a win would be a big boost to either side.

Kanturk entertain Mallow in a local derby but both sides will be more interested in their upcoming league encounter.

Douglas could cause an upset when they visit Musgrave Park to play Sunday’s Well and home advantage could give Dungarvan the edge against Killarney.

There are three quarter final ties in the Munster Junior Bowl competition. Presentation should continue their good run with a home victory over Bantry Bay. Old Crescent should make their trip to Whitechurch where they will face Shandon a wining one and home advantage should see Killorglin beat Kilrush.
