Cup Games Dominated Weekend’s Action.

Shannon booked their place in the final of the Limerick Charity Cup with dramatic win over Bruff as Dolphin and U.C.C. reached the semi finals of the Cork Charity Cup.

With over five minutes of injury time played at Coonagh, Bruff looked like securing their place in the Limerick Charity Cup Final as they led Shannon 21-13.

A try by Shannon's David Quinlan converted by Dan O'Donovan left the minimum between the sides and three minutes later a drop goal by John Colgan saw the home side advance 23-21.

This was a rip roaring cup tie from start to finish. Bruff led 15-8 at half time with tries from Cathal O’Regan and Brendan Deady with Brian Cahill kicking a conversion and penalty. Two further penalties by Cahill looked like to have booked Bruff their place in the decider until Shannon’s late late revival. Shannon's other tries came from ben Sargent and O'Donovan with Sargent also kicking a penalty.

In the Cork Charity Cup Dolphin defeated Sunday’s Well 25-15 in a thrilling game on the back pitch in MusgravePark. Poor tackling by the ‘Well let Dolphin in for some soft tries and the winners four tries, two from Cian Bohane and one each by Barry Keeshan and Paul Hurley proved the difference between the sides.

The ‘Well’s out half Danny O’Shea kept his side in contention with five excellent penalties but Dolphin’s experience proved the difference in the finish.

U.C.C. who have opted out of the Charity Cup in recent seasons returned to the competition and a fine display that yielded seven tries saw them brush aside the challenge of Clonakilty at The Vale 46-14.

Olan Dennehy scored three of his sides tries with Willie Walsh, Graham Mackessy, Andrew O’Leary and Brian Nolan getting one each. Walsh kicked four conversions and a penalty with Dave Cookson and Dave Lombard being try scorers for the home side with Cookson converting both.

Holders Richmond advanced to the next round of the Transfield Cup with a 23-9 victory over Young Munster at Clifford Park.

In the only other tie in this competition Newcastle West needed extra time to see of the challenge of St. Mary’s 13-8.

There were no shocks in the opening round of the Cork County Cup.

Bandon edged out Muskerry 17-12. The west Cork side led 11-0 at half time with a try by Colin O’Mahony and two penalties by Sean O’Riordan.

Muskerry came back after the break with tries from Rob Mahony and Tim Keating and a conversion by John Herlihy but O’Riordan made sure of victory for the home side with two further penalties.

Two sides made their debut in this competition Waterford City and Bantry Bay.

Waterford City traveled to Ballincollig and lost 25-12. Dave Power, Glen Murphy, Rob Foulkes and Brian Mahony scored tries for the winners and Denis Galvin kicked a conversion and penalty.

Old Christians ran out easy winners over Bantry Bay winning 31-0. Tom Maher, Aidan Ware, Alan O’Connell, Stuart Lee and Rob Stapleton all scored tries for the Rathcooney side and Aidan Tobin added three conversions.

Youghal defeated Mallow 13-8 in an exciting tie at the north Cork venue. The visitors led 5-3 at half time with a try from Brendan Mackey and Mallow had a penalty by Sam Hunt. A second try by Conor Lane and a Jonathon Ormond penalty earned Youghal victory as Kieran O’Gorman replied with a try for Mallow.

Charleville won the North Cork derby with 23-15 home win over Fermoy. Charleville had to come from 10-6 down at half time to win with tries from Matty O’Neill, John O’Neill and Joe Hayes. Dave Coleman kicked two penalties and Peadar Cronin kicked a conversion. Jim Mackessy and Kieran Hegarty scored tries for Fermoy and Sean O’Riordan kicked a penalty and conversion.

Crosshaven brushed aside the challenge of Midleton on a 35-0 scoreline. Eamon Ring scored two tries for the winners and Ross O’Connell, Dan O’Donovan and Liam Delaney got one each. Ian Good converted all five tries.

In the other tie Kinsale defeated Douglas 19-0.

Richmond defeated U.L. Bohemian 27-21 in the opening round of the McInerney Cup.

In the other tie in this competition between Bruff and Old Crescent, the game was abandoned with the Rosbrien side leading 15-10 because of a leg injury to one of the players that resulted in the game being held up.

Holders Cork Constitution advanced to the quarter finals of the Dennehy Cup with a 24-3 home win over Old Christians. Rory O’Sullivan, Tom Harrington, Shane Desmond and Will Long all scored tries for the home side and Simon Barry added two conversions. Old Christians replied with a penalty from Conor Mangan.

The Temple Hill side will now face Sunday’s Well next week after the Musgrave Park side’s surprising 27-21 away win over Dunmanway. Colin Pullin, Steve Chambers and Gordon Brett all scored tries for Dunmanway and Barry McCarthy kicked two penalties.

Ballincollig surprisingly brushed aside Dolphin’s challenge on a 49-14 scoreline. Dave Lucy scored two tries for the winners and Kevin Doyle, Colman Farrell, Brian O’Brien and James Ryan got one each. Kevin Ryan kicked five conversions and three penalties.

Ballincollig will now meet Bandon next week, after the west Cork side overcame Carrigaline 23-21. Killian Glynn was Bandon’s top scorer with two tries, three conversions and a penalty. Colm Keane also added a try for Bandon.

Cobh Pirates easily brushed aside the Mallow challenge with a 31-0 victory with good performances from Aaron Kennedy, Eoin Ryan, Dave Mulcahy, Ian Jones and Fergal Twomey.

Cobh will now face Crossahven next week.

The last remaining quarter final is between Kinsale and Clonakilty. Kinsale defeated Muskerry 41-13. Liam O’Sullivan scored a try for the losers and Rob Creagh kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Clonakilty defeated Highfield 18-12. James Deasy scored a try, conversion and two penalties for the west Cork side and Kieran O’Donovan also crossed for a try.
