Disability Inclusion Blitz At Irish Independent Park
19th May 2016 By Munster Rugby
Following on from last year’s hugely successful blitz held at Thomond Park, Munster Rugby recently ran a ‘Special Schools Tag Rugby’ programme in Cork.
The Xcessible Youth Sport Initiative is a three year national focused programme aimed at increasing the participation of children with disabilities in physical action and sport.
Overseen by Munster Community Rugby officer Euan Gee, and with the assistance of Willie Ryan from the ISSSC, over 100 boys and girls took part in the 8 a-side tag rugby event representing the following schools:-
- Our Lady of Good Counsel Ballincollig
- Scoil Bernadette Montenotte
- St Anne’s Special School Ennis
- Catherine McAuley School Limerick
- Scoil Chormaic Cashel
In its second year running this initiative has been a great success highlighting how sport and physical activity is accessible for all.
Please see below video from last year’s blitz day at Thomond Park Stadium.
Speaking on behalf of Munster Rugby Euan Gee said "This hugely positive partnership initiative has given children from special schools the opportunity to play rugby when it previously might not have been an option. Also, it has given clubs the chance to engage with the disability sector and perhaps see the benefits and requirements of having a disability rugby section in their clubs.
Munster Rugby would like to thank everyone involved in the planning and implementation of this overwhelmingly positive initiative."
