Domestic Game Roundup 12th September

Holders Young Munster will play Shannon in next week’s Limerick Charity Cup, as Cork Constitution will face U.C.C. in Cork Charity Cup.

Tries by Matthew Costello and Shane Hassett helped Young Munster to a 24-17 victory over Garryowen at Tom Clifford Park in the Limerick Charity Cup. Willie Storan kicked three penalties, drop goal and a conversion. Garryowen replied with tries By JP Conway and Conan Doyle with Doyle converting both and also adding a penalty.

Cork Constitution defeated Dolphin in the first of the Cork Charity Cup semi finals 22-9. Darragh Lyons scored the games only try for Con’ and Richard Lanekicked five penalties and a conversion. Barry Keeshan replied with two penalties and a drop goal for Dolphin.

U.C.C. had to come from 16-3 down with a late rally to beat Midleton 26-16 in the other semi final. Willie Walsh, Chris Nolan and Dave Kingston all scored tries for the students and Andrew Burke kicked three penalties and a drop goal. Midleton replied with a try, conversion, penalty from Jeff Hitchmough and a drop goal by Rob Smyth.

There were no major shocks in the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup. Holders Kilfeacle eventually saw off the challenge of a brave Ballincollig side to advance to the quarter finals 31-20. It was 19-17 in favour of the Tipperaryside at half time. Thomas power scored two tries for the winners and Gavin Ryan, Sean Leahy and Josh Featherstone were the other try scorers. Shane Luby kicked three conversions. Ballincollig replied with tries from Glen Murphy and Cathal Twohig and Keith Stafford converted both and also kicked two penalties.

The only surprise of the day was Crosshaven’s 29-14 away win over Skibbereen. Liam Delaney contributed a try, five penalties and two conversions and Andrew Lanealso scored a try for the visitors. Skibbereen had tries from Peter Stout and Shane Crowley both of which Peter Mihaere converted.

Cashel defeated Clanwilliam 23-3 with Pat O’Connor scoring a try, two conversions and three penalties. Kevin Quinlan also scored a try for the winners.

Four penalties from Aidan Tobin was not enough for Old Christians who lost away to Tralee 16-14. Brian Mullins and Kevin O’Shea were try scorers for the Kerry side and Gareth Walsh and Mullins added a penalty each.

Three second half tries proved too much for St. Senan’s who lost away to Cobh Pirates 23-3. The sides were level 3-3 at the break but tries from Darren Frahill, John O’Malley and Sean O’Neill and two penalties and a conversion by Mark Chandler earned Cobh a quarter final tie away to Tralee. Declan Collins kicked a penalty for the Clare side.

In the other tie Waterpark defeated Thurles 49-12. Derek Butlerscored four tries for the winners, Martin O’Neill got two and Colm Walsh one. Jared Dunbar kicked four conversions and Brendan Walsh three, Donnacha Duggan and Barry Dwyer replied with tries for the Tipperaryside and Dwyer converted one.

Next week’s quarter final line up is:-

Richmond v Cashel,

Kilfeacle v Crosshaven,

Tralee v Cobh Pirates.

The winners of these ties will qualify for this season’s All Ireland Junior Cup.

Galbally who needed the first try rule to beat Kanturk in last season’s Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield Final, made no mistake this in this year’s opening round when they recorded a 24-3 victory at the West Limerickvenue. Frank Cussen, Ian Ryan, James Taylor and Liam Casey all scored tries for Galbally and Casey kicked two conversions. Darragh Meade replied with a penalty for Kanturk.

Killarney caused the biggest shock of the day with a 40-7 home win over Muskerry. Paul O’Sullivan and Patrick Crowe scored two tries each for the winners and Brian O’Sullivan and Adrian Hegarty got one apiece. Paudie Sheehan kicked five conversions. JJ Herlihy replied with a late try for the visitors which he also converted.

Newcastle West defeated Newport 24-8. Declan Moloney, Rory Keating and Donal O’Sullivan scored tries for the West Limerickside and Tommy Kelleher added three conversions and a penalty.

Mallow put in an impressive performance in their 21-11 away win over Bandon. Kieran O’Gorman and John McAulliffe scored tries for the north Corkside, Sam Holt kicked a conversion and penalty and Cian McCarthy added two drop goals. Sean O’Neill replied with a try for Bandon and Richard Milner kicked two penalties.

St. Mary’s defeated Charleville 27-13. Ger McInerney and Tom Meehan scored tries for the Limerickside and Sean Lyons kicked a conversion and five penalties. Charleville replied with a try from Mattie O’Neill which Peadar Cronin converted and Shane Corkery kicked two penalties.

Kinsale continued their good start with a 22-6 home win over Ennis. Frazer Hodgson, Peter Murphy and Edouard Brouard-Lemaire scored tries for Kinsale and Murphy added two conversions and a penalty.

Waterford City ended Carrick-on-Suir’s reign as Martin O’Sullivan Cup holders when they defeated the Tipperaryside 28-24 in the first round of this season’s competition. Damian Kennedy, Colm Lynch, Kevin Whelan and Jason Power scored tries for the Suirsiders. Alan Foskin converted all four ties. Carrick’ replied with tries from Dean Casey, Declan White and James Wallace and Michael Cronin converted all three and also kicked a penalty.

A last minute penalty gave Dungarvan a dramatic 23-22 win over Fermoy at the West Waterfordvenue. A try by David O’Riordan and a conversion and two penalties by Conor Foley had the home side 13-12 ahead at the break. Thomas McAuliffe kicked four penalties for the visitors. A fifth penalty and a conversion of a try by Jim Mackessy looked like booking Fermoy’s place in the quarter finals but a try by Darragh Ryan and a conversion and penalty by Foley saw Dungarvan advance.

Abbeyfeale and Douglas played a 12-12 draw after extra time but it is Abbeyfeale who advance on the first try rule. Kieran McCarthy and David Collins scored tries for Abbeyfeale and Paul O’Sullivan converted one. Douglashad tries from David O’Callaghan and Eoin Philpott with O’Callaghan converting his own try.

Corca Dhuibhne defeated Bantry Bay 41-13. Ciaran Collins score two tries and kicked four conversions and a penalty. Shane O’Rourke, Ciaran Slattery, Kevin Moriarty and Gavin Curran were the West Gaeltachtside’s other try scorers. Eugene McCarthy scored a try for Bantry and Brian Keohane kicked a conversion and two penalties.

In the other tie Presentation defeated Kilrush 25-11.

Garryowen and U.L. Bohemian advanced to the next round of the Transfield Cup. The Dooradoyle side defeated Thomond 23-7 and U.L. Bohemian were 20-7 winners over Shannon at Coonagh.

It was a great week for Bruff in the McInerney Cup. In mid week they defeated Old Crescent 18-17 and followed that up with a 64-10 home win over St. Senan’s to book a semi final place.

Also through to the last four are Richmond who defeated St. Mary’s 43-7 and Thomond who beat Young Munster 23-17 at Derryknockane.

Cork Constitution booked their place in the semi final of the Dennehy Cup where they will face Cobh Pirates after their 29-10 home win over Sunday’s Well. Owen O’Driscoll scored two tries for the winners and Emmet Doyle and Peter O’Sullivan got one each and the latter also kicked a penalty and three conversions. John Boyling scored a try for the ‘Well and Niall Horgan kicked a conversion and penalty.

Two tries from Rory Owens and a penalty by Kevin Ryan helped Ballincollig to a 13-6 victory over Bandon. Cillian Glynn replied with two penalties for the visitors.

Clonakilty defeated Kinsale 21-20 in the other tie.

Tries by Kevin Humphries, Eric Healy and Dave Donnelly earned Old Christians a 15-8 victory over Dunmanway in the O’Sullivan Cup and will now face mallow in week’s semi final.

Dolphin defeated Carrigaline 25-3 with tries from Wayne Ryan, Mark McCarthy and Tim Cotter. Pat Ahern kicked two penalties and two conversions.

Highfield booked their semi final place with a 30-13 away win over Muskerry.
